Heating and Air Conditioner Zoning
HVAC
Zoning a house or building can be defined as separating temperature controls to achieve desired indoor climate. Sometimes doing this can be quite tricky. Two story homes, for example, almost always have trouble or issues with certain rooms being too hot during winter or certain rooms being too cold during summer. To achieve what some call a more stable and constant temperature setting, HVAC or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, use multiple Air Conditioning systems or zoning systems.
How can you keep the temperature in your house the same?
Two Story buildings
Having multiple Air Conditioning systems in your house enables you to control, for example, the downstairs with one unit and the upstairs with another. This helps because the faster the air returns back to the Air Conditioner, the faster energy is able to be dispersed as it should; whether hot or cold. And so the Upstairs Air Conditioner will return the air upstairs to that system and likewise the downstairs will do for the air downstairs. All of this controlled by two thermostats. Of course one thermostat for downstairs and one for upstairs.
Some have chosen to use a zoning system. This system uses a motorized damper (Dampers are used to either open or close to limit air flow) and a control board to limit where the air from the Air conditioner goes. For, example once the upstairs has achieved its desired temperature, the thermostat for upstairs will signal to the control board that that's the case and close the dampers that limit air flow that part of the house. However, the thermostat for downstairs will continue to call for air because that part of the house hasn't reached its desired temperature. Therefore, signaling to the control board to leave the damper open until that desired temperature is achieved. After both upstairs and downstairs thermostat setting has been fulfilled, then the unit will shut off.
For Single story buildings, you can get by with just one Air conditioning system, given the house or building in not too large.
