The Life of Alaskan Gamers

Basically, this lens will cover: differences between gaming in other states and the life style of the Alaskan gamer, and useful cold weather products.

Gaming in Alaska

life at its best

Impossible! There aren't any computers in Alaska. Despite popular belief, Alaska is not a backwards rural state where everyone rides a polar bear to their igloo. I do find the thought of that image quite funny but obviously untrue. Cities in Alaska such as, Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, the Kenai Peninsula etc... are very modern and just like the rest of the major cities in the "lower 48s" but some on a smaller scale.

For those of us used to having cheap high-speed internet think again! Recently I have compared prices from Arizona to Alaska and wow was I surprised. A 10 megabit internet line in Alaska costs nearly five times as much money as a 20 megabit internet line in Arizona! The costs of many things up here are much more expensive than in other states.

One major reason gaming (playing video/computer games) is so popular here is the weather. Even the hardiest of us get tired of the subzero temperatures and want to relax in our nice warm home and be entertained. Where internet is available, even in the remote areas, can indulge their mind and escape from reality. Those who are disable, have limited mobility, want to be alone, or would love to spend an evening with their friends from across the world can do some through the medium of a game.

A good point to make is is, video games tend to have a good ratio of time of enjoyment versus money spent. Aside from being addicted to video games as a kind until present, price has been an issue as well. Why spend $30 at the movies for two hours of entertainment when one can spend $15 a month to play an MMO (massively multiplayer online game) with unlimited amount of entertainment possible. Most games roughly cost $50 upfront and allow for a life time of entertainment.

I am not saying "never leave your hovel and become a hermit." I would just like to suggest the idea that video games are a great way for people of all walks of life, areas of the world, and different backgrounds to share a commonality of fun.

Sure weather can affect any part of the world; but Alaska can always count on some cold weather and lots of snow. Below are some items that are excellent items that can help keep gaming comfortable. Hand warmers are a perfect item for myself due to having ghostly-cold hands year round. I won't recommend an item if I wouldn't/haven't used the item myself.
