Important Alcohol Abuse Facts and Information
Here's some basic but important alcohol abuse information. Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that results in ongoing alcohol-related relationship problems; the failure to attend to important responsibilities at home, school, or at work; drinking situations that can result in physical injury; and/or the experience of recurring alcohol-related legal problems.
Due to the fact that alcohol abuse and alcoholism affects 14 million people in the United States and millions of other people throughout the world, the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction present all developed and industrialized countries with major societal and personal problems.
What Is Alcohol Abuse?
Alcohol abuse is a drinking pattern that characteristically results in one or more of the following during a twelve-month time period:
- Alcohol-related physical injury
- The experience of recurring alcohol-related legal difficulties (such as multiple DWIs)
- Failure to attend to important responsibilities at school, home, or work
- Ongoing alcohol-related relationship issues
Alcohol Abuse and Social and Personal Problems
Due to the fact that alcohol abuse and alcoholism affect 14 million individuals in the United States and millions of other people throughout the world, the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction present all developed and industrialized countries with major societal and personal problems.
Teenage Alcohol Abuse
When people think of alcohol abuse, many of them typically focus on adult alcohol abuse. Learning about alcohol abuse, however, is especially important concerning teenage alcohol abuse because this is the time at which alcohol abuse usually starts.
A key point: if you as a teenager or a parent of a teenager can read about and comprehend some of the alcohol abuse statistics and alcohol abuse facts, you or your teenage son or daughter may be able to avoid the negative consequences that are associated with alcohol abuse in school, college, or in the workplace. A result of this kind of "proactive thinking" will be that the topic of alcohol abuse treatment may be forestalled before it ever becomes an issue.
Alcohol Abuse Treatment
The various forms of alcohol abuse treatment work in diverse ways for different people. Like any chronic disease, however, there are varying degrees of success when it comes to treatment. For instance, some people, after treatment, refrain from drinking and remain sober. Others who abuse alcohol experience relatively long periods of sobriety after treatment, and then have a drinking relapse. And still other alcohol abusers cannot refrain from drinking for any sustainable period of time no matter what kind of treatment they receive.
Binge Drinking is a Type of Alcohol Abuse
Apparently many people do not realize that getting drunk "only" a few times per year is neither "responsible drinking" nor "drinking in moderation." In fact, occasional alcohol abuse has become so widespread that it has received its own name: binge drinking.
Binge drinking is defined as having four or more drinks at one sitting for women and five or more drinks during one sitting for men. Why is binge drinking dangerous? Not only does binge drinking significantly increase the risk of serious injury and the possibility of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, but it can also result in an alcohol overdose or alcohol poisoning, an outcome that can be deadly.
Alcohol Abuse Can Result in Alcoholism
As mentioned above, many people seem to think that getting drunk infrequently is considered "safe" and that they are "drinking in moderation." What these individuals need to know is that continued alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholism.
The Bottom Line: Controlling Your Drinking
When discussing the drinking of alcohol, however, one thing is clear: the longer a person stays away from alcohol, the more likely he or she will be able to remain sober and avoid the negative consequences associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

"The incidence of intoxication (i.e., a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or greater) for drivers in fatal crashes in 2003 was highest for motorcycle operators (29% ) and lowest for drivers of large trucks (1%). The incidence of intoxication for drivers of light trucks and passenger car drivers was the same (22%)."
"Interestingly, hangovers are generally more common in light to moderate drinkers than heavy and chronic drinkers, suggesting that binge drinking can be as threatening as chronic drinking."
"According to alcoholism research, there are higher rates of alcoholism in the unemployed, laborers, those of lower socioeconomic status, those that drop out of high school, those who entered college but failed to earn a degree, and those under more stress."
"There are many symptoms related to drinking problems. Alcoholism is considered a progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms and effects of drinking alcohol become increasingly more severe over time."

"An estimated 19.5 million Americans aged 12 or older were current users of an illicit drug in 2003. This estimate represents 8.2 percent of the population."
"In one U.S. study, the intoxication rate (.08+ BAC) for male drivers involved in fatal crashes was 25%, compared to 12% for female drivers."
"Since alcohol blocks emotional pain, it is frequently resorted to as a cover up during times of temporary or ongoing stress or grief such as that experienced with the loss of a loved one or relationship, unresolved family tensions, and chronic work stress."
"Quitting is the only way to stop the problems alcohol is causing in your life. It may not be easy to quit. But your efforts will be rewarded by better health, better relationships and a sense of accomplishment. As you think about quitting, you may want to make a list of your reasons to quit."

Not only this, but mixing alcohol and drugs not only compounds the drug and alcohol problems that the abuser experiences, but doing so increases the person's need for professional alcohol and drug treatment."

The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."
"U.S. driving statistics show that a driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.10 or greater is seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash than is a driver who has not consumed alcoholic beverages, and a driver with an alcohol concentration of 0.15 or greater is about 25 times more likely."
