Attention "Problem Drinkers." Discover Critical Information About Alcohol Addiction
Alcohol addiction is a progressive degenerative disease that includes the following four symptoms: tolerance, the loss of control, physical dependence, and craving.
There are a variety of different issues regarding alcohol addiction that need to be studied in order to better understand this devastating disease. More precisely, there are behavioral, social, psychological, physical, and health aspects of this disease that ironically can be seen as leading to and also resulting from alcohol addiction.
Is Alcohol Addictive?
Based on the above, when someone asks if alcohol is addictive, perhaps the best answer is this: although drinking alcoholic beverages does not negatively affect everyone, a significant number of people who drink alcohol can and do become addicted. It is important to point out, therefore, that if you observe your friends or family members exhibiting any of the above listed symptoms or behaviors, consider them as signs of alcohol addiction or symptoms of alcohol addiction.
And if your friend or family member exhibits some of these signs, he or she may need alcohol addiction help. More to the point, he or she may need alcohol addiction treatment, alcohol addiction counseling, or may need to enter a treatment center for alcohol addiction rehab.
The Alcoholic, Self-Control, and Willpower
Frequently, people who are not alcoholic do not understand why an alcoholic can't simply use willpower or self-control to stop drinking. In most instances, however, alcohol dependence has little to do with willpower. People with alcohol addiction are caught in the compelling grip of an uncontrollable need for alcohol that takes priority over their ability to stop drinking. Indeed, this need to drink for the alcoholic can be as strong as his or her need for food or water.
Alcohol Addiction Recovery
It is no wonder then that when an alcoholic tries to stop drinking, the alcohol withdrawal symptoms may be so severe that the person may require alcohol withdrawal treatment at a detox facility or hospital if he or she is to experience the start of alcohol addiction recovery. Even though some people are able to recover from alcohol dependence without clinical or personal help, many, if not most, alcoholics need assistance.
Alcohol Addiction Treatment: Traditional Approaches
There are a number of traditional alcohol addiction treatment options that are widely available. The following alcoholism treatment programs and therapies are considered "mainstream" types of alcohol addiction treatment: Residential Alcoholism Treatment Programs and Inpatient Alcohol Rehab, Outpatient Alcoholism Treatment and Counseling, Behavioral Treatment, Family and Marital Counseling, Detoxification, and Therapeutic Medications.
Alcohol Addiction Treatment: Alternative Therapies
Although the research findings are not conclusive, there are a number of alternative alcohol addiction treatment approachesthat are becoming more researched, widely used, and more available. Examples include the following therapies that have been proposed as "natural" forms of alcohol addiction treatment: the holistic and naturalistic approaches employed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, various vitamin and supplement therapies, and "Drumming out Drugs" (a form of therapy that employs the use of drumming by clients).
As encouraging and promising as these alternative therapies are, more research, nevertheless, is required to ascertain their effectiveness and to find out if these forms of treatment for alcohol addiction offer long term success.
Overcoming Alcohol Addiction
The good news, however, is this: through treatment, support, and professional alcohol addiction treatment programs many people with an alcohol dependency are able to overcome alcoholic withdrawal, abstain from drinking, and rebuild their lives.

Drug users are less likely to take all of their medications, and street drugs may have dangerous interactions with HIV medications.""Does alcohol advertising work? According to a 1999 Federal Trade Commission report, alcohol companies placed their alcoholic products in in one or more episodes of 181 different television series and in 233 motion pictures in 1997-98. Interestingly, in the fifteen TV shows that were the most popular with teenagers, eight had alcohol product placements."
