Devastating and Unhealthy Alcohol Consequences: A Need For More Alcohol Awareness
When examining alcohol from an historical perspective, it can be determined that people have known about alcohol and alcohol information and have been drinking alcoholic drinks and beverages for at least 10,000 years.
Excessive Drinking and Abuse: An Historical Perspective
Even though alcohol has been used in a number of different ways throughout history that can be called beneficial or "positive," it is interesting to point out that thousands of years ago it was known that excessive drinking and abuse also led to personal and social problems. For instance, Plato and Aristotle, two of the more famous ancient Greek philosophers, were openly critical of drunkenness.
Additionally, a Chinese manuscript written approximately 650 B.C. was recently found which stated how hard it was for people to do without beer and actually included warnings about the "abuse" of beer.
Millions of People Worldwide Have Drinking Problems
Since people have known about the positive as well as the damaging consequences of alcohol for hundreds and thousands of years, why is it that millions upon millions of people worldwide experience so many drinking problems? Stated differently, in our more "aware" and "enlightened" world, why do so many individuals suffer from the unhealthy, destructive, and in some instances, the fatal results of excessive drinking, alcohol abuse, and alcoholism?
Are the More Advanced Countries More Vulnerable to Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism?
Alcoholism has become a significant problem in industrialized countries throughout the world. Ironically, the more "developed" and technologically advanced a country becomes, the more it seems vulnerable to the societal and personal problems and difficulties that are directly or indirectly caused by alcoholism.
The Cost of Alcohol-Related Problems
In basic economic terms, alcohol-related problems in the United States cost society almost $200 billion per year. In human terms, regrettably, the cost of the following alcohol-related issues and problems cannot be calculated: failed health, broken homes, child abuse, wife battering, injuries, destroyed lives, illnesses, and fatalities.
Some Alcohol Statistics and Facts
Many of the dangers of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction do not fully make an impact on people's awareness until some relevant statistics are explicitly stated. It is with this in mind that the following is included.
More specifically, according to a study initiated by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University in 2005, the following statistics about alcoholism and alcohol abuse were revealed:
- In the United States during 2004, 16,694 deaths occurred as a result of alcohol-related motor-vehicle crashes. This amount was approximately 39% of all traffic fatalities. This amounts to one alcohol-related death every 31 minutes.
- The 9.6% of adult alcoholics drink 25% of the alcohol that is consumed by all adult drinkers.
- Every year in the U.S. more than 150,000 college students develop health problem that are alcohol-related.
- Alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse cost the United States an estimated $220 billion in 2005. This dollar amount was more than the cost associated with cancer ($196 billion) and obesity ($133 billion).
- American youth who drinking before the of age 15 are four times more likely to become alcoholics than young people who do not drink before the age of 21.
- Every year, 1,400 American college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related inadvertent injuries, including motor vehicle accidents.
- The 25.9% of underage drinkers who are alcohol abusers and alcohol dependent drink 47.3% of the alcohol that is consumed by all underage drinkers.
- Every day in the U.S. more than 13,000 children and teens take their first drink.
Alcohol Awareness: Conclusion
Unfortunately, alcoholism has become a critical problem in the United States AND in other parts of the world. In short, the people of the world apparently need additional alcohol information and "alcohol awareness" if they are to become more knowledgeable about and avoid the unhealthy, deleterious, and at times, the fatal consequences of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.
