Important and Relevant Information About Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning, also known as alcohol overdose, is a dangerous and sometimes deadly result of drinking extreme amounts of ethanol alcohol.

It is important to point out that binge drinking (consuming five or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting for males and four or more alcoholic beverages at one sitting for females) can also lead to alcohol poisoning.  This is mentioned because many people seem to think that getting drunk via binge drinking once or twice per year is "safe" or an example of drinking in "moderation."  Keep in mind that getting extremely drunk even ONCE can result in an alcohol overdose.

Factors That Affect Your Blood Alcohol Level

The effects of the alcohol on your body depend on the amount of alcohol in your blood (your blood alcohol concentration or BAC).  Factors that affect your blood alcohol level include the following:

1.  How quickly your body metabolizes the alcohol
2.  How strong the alcoholic drink is
3.  How quickly you consume the alcoholic drink
4.  How much food is in your stomach at the time you drink
5.  How much alcohol you have consumed

Alcohol Poisoning Symptoms

The first symptom of alcohol poisoning is usually nausea, followed by vomiting.  These symptoms are messages from your body that you ingested more alcohol than your body can metabolize.  The following represents other signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning:

1.  Confusion
2.  Absent reflexes
3.  No withdrawal from painful stimuli (for instance from pinching)
4.  Unconsciousness (passing out)
5.  Slow, shallow, or irregular breathing
6.  Difficulty awakening the person
7.  Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
8.  Seizures

Alcohol Poisoning Frequency

Approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported each year in the United States. Not only this, but roughly once every week, someone needlessly dies from alcohol poisoning.  Understanding alcohol poisoning symptoms and the causes of a toxic reaction and responding intelligently and appropriately to such circumstances can help avoid a fatal alcohol overdose.

The Hardest Part About Saving Someone From Alcohol Poisoning

Almost surprisingly, the most difficult aspect of saving someone from alcohol poisoning, interestingly, does not take place in the hospital Emergency Room.  Nor does saving a person from alcohol poisoning involve complicated medical treatment. The hardest part of an alcohol overdose case is making the decision to seek immediate medical help.  The fear of embarrassment, public humiliation, possible legal repercussions (for instance, for underage drinkers), or a lack of knowledge about the symptoms and the seriousness of alcohol poisoning can lead to indecision, which can be fatal.

Responding Appropriately To A Case of Alcohol Poisoning

If someone who has been drinking heavily persists in falling asleep, waken him or her. If the person does not respond easily, it is time to call the police emergency number (911) and ask for assistance.  Another point that needs to be emphasized is this:  do not simply assume that the person will "sleep it off" or would prefer not to be disturbed.

Furthermore, getting the person home and in bed is not a solution, and may actually place the drinker at risk due to the fact that he or she is no longer being observed.  If you reasonably believe that other drugs were also ingested, be sure to tell the ambulance or medical personnel.  Alcohol when combined with other drugs, legal or illegal, accounts for approximately 33% of all drug overdose cases in the United States.

Alcohol Poisoning:  Conclusion

Approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported each year in the United States, and roughly once per week, someone needlessly dies from alcohol poisoning.

It is important to emphasize the fact that those who experience an alcohol overdose are NOT necessarily alcoholics or alcohol dependent individuals.  That is, alcohol poisoning can result from binge drinking or abusing alcohol as well as from alcoholic behavior.  Realizing this may help the "explosive drinking pattern" that binge drinking has become in the United States.

Understanding the causes of alcohol poisoning and its symptoms and reacting quickly and appropriately to such circumstances can help avoid a fatal overdose and help a person receive the proper medical treatment. In order for the person to get professional treatment, however, it is important for someone to dial 911 and ask for immediate medical assistance.

Alcohol Poisoning and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts

Did you know...

"In the United States, the correlation between the battering of women and alcohol abuse is the highest for men who believe that male control and power over women are acceptable in various situations."

"U.S. children who are drinking alcohol by 7th grade are more likely to report academic problems, substance use, and delinquent behavior in both middle school and high school."

"The U.S. alcoholism statistics remain overwhelming. There are roughly 14 million individuals in the U.S. who are addicted to alcohol and millions more who display symptoms of abuse, including binge drinking. Unfortunately, a reported 2.6 million binge drinkers in 2002 were between the ages of 12 and 17 years old."

"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research demonstrates the fact that if you consume alcoholic beverages, it's important to know whether your drinking patterns are safe, risky or harmful. Answering these questions will take only a few minutes, and will generate personalized results based on your age, gender and drinking patterns."

"Early signs of alcoholism include frequent intoxication, an established pattern of heavy drinking and drinking in dangerous situations, such as when driving. Other early signs of alcoholism include black-out drinking or a drastic change in demeanor while drinking, such as consistently becoming angry or violent."

"In one U.S. study, the overwhelming majority of surveyed youth (74% of 8-17 year-olds; 74% of 8-12 year-olds; 74% of 13-17 year-olds) cite their parents as the primary influence in their decisions about whether they drink alcohol or not."

"U.S. alcohol abuse research scientists have discovered that people who stop using other drugs (such as marijuana, Oxycontin, or heroin) at the same time they quit drinking alcohol, might experience excessive withdrawal problems. These individuals, consequently, should see a doctor before they quit their addictive habits."

"In the United States during 2004, 16,694 deaths occurred as a result of alcohol-related motor-vehicle accidents. This amount was roughly 39% of all traffic fatalities. This amounts to one alcohol-related death every 31 minutes."

"U.S. research shows that many people do not go to a doctor specifically for alcohol problems but seek treatment for physical conditions (such as cirrhosis) that result from long-term alcohol use. Your doctor might ask you questions about your drinking to help see whether alcohol abuse is the cause of a condition like cirrhosis."

"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research shows that approximately 20% of teens are 'problem drinkers.' Problem drinking can result in alcohol related accidents, intoxication, binge drinking, or getting into problems with friends, school, work, the law, or with family members because of alcohol abuse."

"Drug and alcohol abuse statistics reveal that more than 67% of the funding for drug and alcohol treatment programs comes from public sources. Private insurance pays for about 14% of these services and the patients pay for about 10%."

"In some areas, part of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face to face with victims, who tell their painful stories of how a drunk driver changed their lives forever. The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."

"Research shows that even moderate amounts of alcohol can have damaging effects on the developing fetus, including low birth weight and an increased risk for miscarriage."

"During the last stage of alcoholism, benders are common. Stated more explicitly, during this stage of the disease, the alcoholic often gets helplessly and hopelessly drunk and may remain in this predicament for days at a time. The unattainable goal for the alcohol dependent person at this time is to recapture the feeling of euphoria he or she once experienced."

"Approximately 10% of the time addiction is recognized as the cause of the problem that brought the patient into the health care system. An ulcer probably won't kill you. A broken bone probably won't kill you. A cut on your head probably won't kill you. But alcoholism will kill you if you allow it to continue."

"If you drink to an excess, you may consume more alcohol than your body can metabolize and eliminate. Under these circumstances, the body and the brain may become "overloaded" and result in alcohol poisoning. If the amount of alcohol is great enough, the body and the brain will 'shut down' and the person can die as a result."

"Although some studies reveal that moderate drinking may have some health benefits, most doctors do not recommend that you start drinking for your heart or other health reasons. Why? Because the risks of drinking alcohol almost always outweigh any benefits."

"Alcohol use interacts with conditions such as depression and stress to contribute to suicide, the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 14 and 25. In one U.S. study, 37 percent of eighth grade females who drank heavily reported attempting suicide, compared with 11 percent who did not drink."

"Psychological addiction occurs when the cravings for a drug are emotional or psychological. People who are psychologically addicted typically feel overcome by the desire to have the drug in question."

"According to a study undertaken from 2000 to 2001, men are much more likely than women to drink in ways that are harmful."

"Although they use alcohol in an unhealthy way, people who suffer from alcohol abuse do not necessarily develop a physical dependence upon alcohol."

"According to the alcohol addiction research literature, many, if not most, of the people who become alcohol dependent were abusive drinkers earlier in their lives. This finding shows the fragile and thin line that separates alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction."

"Alcohol problems cluster in and destroy families. More than 50% of current American drinkers have a family history of alcoholism."

"According to U.S. research, alcohol is typically found in the offender, victim or both in about half of all homicides and serious assaults, as well as in a high percentage of sex-related crimes."

"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug abuse problem."

"In some areas, part of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face to face with victims, who tell their painful stories of how a drunk driver changed their lives forever. The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."

"In a relatively recent research study undertaken by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that binge drinkers are significantly more likely to be involved in vehicle accidents when compared with non-binge drinkers."
