Alcohol Poisoning

Important and Relevant Information About Alcohol Poisoning
Alcohol poisoning, also known as alcohol overdose, is a dangerous and sometimes deadly result of drinking extreme amounts of ethanol alcohol.
It is important to point out that binge drinking (consuming five or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting for males and four or more alcoholic beverages at one sitting for females) can also lead to alcohol poisoning. This is mentioned because many people seem to think that getting drunk via binge drinking once or twice per year is "safe" or an example of drinking in "moderation." Keep in mind that getting extremely drunk even ONCE can result in an alcohol overdose.
Factors That Affect Your Blood Alcohol Level
The effects of the alcohol on your body depend on the amount of alcohol in your blood (your blood alcohol concentration or BAC). Factors that affect your blood alcohol level include the following:
1. How quickly your body metabolizes the alcohol
2. How strong the alcoholic drink is
3. How quickly you consume the alcoholic drink
4. How much food is in your stomach at the time you drink
5. How much alcohol you have consumed
Alcohol Poisoning Symptoms
The first symptom of alcohol poisoning is usually nausea, followed by vomiting. These symptoms are messages from your body that you ingested more alcohol than your body can metabolize. The following represents other signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning:
1. Confusion
2. Absent reflexes
3. No withdrawal from painful stimuli (for instance from pinching)
4. Unconsciousness (passing out)
5. Slow, shallow, or irregular breathing
6. Difficulty awakening the person
7. Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
8. Seizures
Alcohol Poisoning Frequency
Approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported each year in the United States. Not only this, but roughly once every week, someone needlessly dies from alcohol poisoning. Understanding alcohol poisoning symptoms and the causes of a toxic reaction and responding intelligently and appropriately to such circumstances can help avoid a fatal alcohol overdose.
The Hardest Part About Saving Someone From Alcohol Poisoning
Almost surprisingly, the most difficult aspect of saving someone from alcohol poisoning, interestingly, does not take place in the hospital Emergency Room. Nor does saving a person from alcohol poisoning involve complicated medical treatment. The hardest part of an alcohol overdose case is making the decision to seek immediate medical help. The fear of embarrassment, public humiliation, possible legal repercussions (for instance, for underage drinkers), or a lack of knowledge about the symptoms and the seriousness of alcohol poisoning can lead to indecision, which can be fatal.
Responding Appropriately To A Case of Alcohol Poisoning
If someone who has been drinking heavily persists in falling asleep, waken him or her. If the person does not respond easily, it is time to call the police emergency number (911) and ask for assistance. Another point that needs to be emphasized is this: do not simply assume that the person will "sleep it off" or would prefer not to be disturbed.
Furthermore, getting the person home and in bed is not a solution, and may actually place the drinker at risk due to the fact that he or she is no longer being observed. If you reasonably believe that other drugs were also ingested, be sure to tell the ambulance or medical personnel. Alcohol when combined with other drugs, legal or illegal, accounts for approximately 33% of all drug overdose cases in the United States.
Alcohol Poisoning: Conclusion
Approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported each year in the United States, and roughly once per week, someone needlessly dies from alcohol poisoning.
It is important to emphasize the fact that those who experience an alcohol overdose are NOT necessarily alcoholics or alcohol dependent individuals. That is, alcohol poisoning can result from binge drinking or abusing alcohol as well as from alcoholic behavior. Realizing this may help the "explosive drinking pattern" that binge drinking has become in the United States.
Understanding the causes of alcohol poisoning and its symptoms and reacting quickly and appropriately to such circumstances can help avoid a fatal overdose and help a person receive the proper medical treatment. In order for the person to get professional treatment, however, it is important for someone to dial 911 and ask for immediate medical assistance.

Alcohol Poisoning and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts
Did you know...
"Alcohol is perhaps the most sinister of drugs, one that draws a thin, often imperceptible line between social use and addictive use. Alcohol dependent individuals rely on alcohol as an essential facet of their personality. That is, without their alcohol, they simply cannot 'be themselves.'"
"It is important to note that alcohol overdose doesn't only occur from any one heavy drinking incident, but may also occur from a constant infusion of alcohol in the blood stream."
"Alcohol addiction statistics reveal the following unfortunate facts about alcoholism: almost 13.8 million Americans, which is more than 7% of the population that is 18 years old and older, are 'problem drinkers,' including including 8.1 million individuals who who suffer from alcoholism."
"Recent research demonstrates that the drugs most likely to produce effective results when treating alcohol withdrawal symptoms are the benzodiazepines: the shorter-acting benzodiazepines such as Serax and Ativan or the longer-acting benzodiazepines like Valium and Librium."
"Society views alcoholics as responsible for their problems. To some extent, this is true. Like most of their peers, the alcohol abuser made the early choice to drink but once addiction kicks in, choice is removed. The person must drink to feel normal."
"Alcoholism researchers in one study found that the largest group of alcoholics in the United States are young adults. In fact, twenty percent of these young alcoholics are highly functional and more than half do not have a family history of alcoholism."
"U.S. research shows that many people do not go to a doctor specifically for alcohol problems but seek treatment for physical conditions (such as cirrhosis of the liver) that result from long-term alcohol use. Your doctor might ask you questions about your drinking to help see whether alcohol abuse or alcoholism is the cause of a condition like cirrhosis."
"According to the alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature, approximately 500 million work days are lost each year to alcoholism in the United States."
"Many people turn to the use of alcohol for pain relief and due to its ability to depress the central nervous system and slow down the brain and the nervous system. As a result, drinking alcohol for many people delivers a certain amount of pain relief."
"According to the research literature, people who have achieved alcohol remission but who discontinue participation in Alcoholics Anonymous are at increased risk for alcohol relapse. On the other hand, people who have not stopped drinking and who discontinue participation in Alcoholics Anonymous are more likely to continue drinking."
"A dysfunctional family is a family in which misbehavior, abuse, or conflict by individual family members takes place on a regular basis, leading other members of the family to enable, reinforce, and perpetuate such behaviors."
"Alcohol use interacts with conditions such as depression and stress to contribute to suicide, the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 14 and 25. In one study, 37 percent of eighth grade females who drank heavily reported attempting suicide, compared with 11 percent who did not drink."
"One very typical belief among many people is that drug abusers should be able to quit taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior. What people often fail to comprehend is the complexity of drug addiction-that it is a disease that impacts the brain and because of this, quitting drug abuse is not simply a matter of willpower."
"Alcohol withdrawal symptoms rarely occur in people who only drink once in a while. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms usually occur in people who have been drinking heavily for weeks or months and then suddenly stop drinking."
"It is important to note that alcohol overdose doesn't only occur from any one heavy drinking incident, but may also occur from a constant infusion of alcohol in the blood stream."
"According to the American Medical Association, there is strong scientific evidence suggesting that even modest alcohol consumption in late childhood and adolescence can result in brain damage. To the extent that these research findings are valid, it consequently means that our alcohol and drug abuse education and prevention efforts are in need of a major overhaul and need to be upgraded, updated, and made more relevant to today's students."
"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research has shown that everyone who experiences alcohol withdrawal symptoms needs professional treatment. As a result, alcohol detox and alcohol withdrawal should not be done at home and instead need to be undertaken in a medical rehab or treatment facility."
"Individuals who engage in alcohol and drub abuse, at least on some level, know it, and many times they may try to cut down. They may change from hard liquor to beer or from beer to wine. They may decide to drink or take drugs only after six o'clock or only on weekends. They may even move or change jobs. But the result is more of the same: more substance use."
"In a relatively recent research study undertaken by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that binge drinkers are significantly more likely to be involved in vehicle accidents when compared with non-binge drinkers."
"According to a 2007 Science Daily report, kids who drink to help them deal with anger or frustration issues are not likely to benefit from a prevention program developed for kids who are just experimenting with alcohol."
"Research demonstrates the fact that if someone is not willing to be honest about their drinking habits, it is difficult, if not impossible, to accurately diagnose alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence."
"According to the research literature, in the U.S., alcohol is linked with an estimated 5,000 deaths in people under age 21 each year. This is more deaths than from all the illegal drugs combined."
"The Department of Transportation (DOT) procedures established for mandatory alcohol testing require the employment of a standardized breathalyzer. The categories of testing that are allowed by the DOT are the following: post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and random."
"U.S. highway statistics reveal that in the United States, beer accounts for four times as many alcohol-related traffic accident fatalities (80%) as liquor and wine (20%)."
"Millions of people are affected by the excessive drinking of someone close. Many times people who are close to alcoholics do not even realize how much they have been affected by someone else's drinking."
"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research demonstrates the fact that if you consume alcoholic beverages, it's important to know whether your drinking patterns are safe, risky or harmful. Answering these questions will take only a few minutes, and will generate personalized results based on your age, gender and drinking patterns."
"U.S. alcohol abuse research scientists have discovered that people who stop using other drugs (such as marijuana, Oxycontin, or heroin) at the same time they quit drinking alcohol, might experience excessive withdrawal problems. These individuals, consequently, should see a doctor before they quit their addictive habits."
"Whether a baby's alcohol or drug-caused health problems will continue as the child grows older is not always known. Medical research does show, however, that children born to mothers who used marijuana and or alcohol regularly during pregnancy may have trouble concentrating, when they get older."
"There are many symptoms related to drinking problems. Alcoholism is considered a progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms and effects of drinking alcohol become increasingly more severe over time."
"According to the research literature, in the U.S., alcohol is linked with an estimated 5,000 deaths in people under age 21 each year. This is more deaths than from all the illegal drugs combined."
"According to a 2007 Science Daily report, previous studies have found that alcohol use reaches its peak level during and immediately after high school graduation and remains high through the age of 25."
"In the United States, a number of family-oriented interventions have been used to help prevent alcohol abuse. These interventions include the following: family preservation programs, family services, family therapy, family skills training programs, in-home family crisis services, and family education programs."
