Alcohol Problems That Result From Excessive Drinking
The problems caused by alcohol addiction are widespread as well as damaging. Indeed, chronic alcoholism is truly a devastating, destructive, and debilitating disease that has its effects on the alcoholic; on the alcoholic's social network, namely on his friends, co-workers, neighbors, family members, and other relatives; and on the unfortunate "strangers" who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the alcoholic causes a traffic accident or fatality because he or she was driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Are Alcohol Problems Increasing?
Ironically, it has been known for thousands of years that abusing alcohol and excessive drinking lead to a number of alcohol problems, both social and personal. In spite of this "alcohol awareness," alcohol problems not only exist, but they also seem to be escalating in the "developed" countries of the world.
The Range of Alcohol Problems
Depending on the amount of alcohol that is consumed and how quickly the alcohol is ingested, alcohol problems can range from mild headaches and slight nausea at one extreme and alcohol poisoning, traffic fatalities, alcohol addiction, coma, and death at the other.
Alcohol Problems and Social Relationships
Alcoholism not only affects the alcoholic, but it also negatively influences those who are closest to the alcoholic, namely his family, friends, other relatives, coworkers, and neighbors. The following list is a sample of the American social problems that result from alcoholism:
· Work-related injuries and accidents
· Wife battering
· Codependent behavior in others
· Birth defects such as fetal alcohol syndrome
· Destroyed relationships
· Child abuse
· Destroyed lives
· Harm to the fetus while the mother is pregnant
· Broken, dysfunctional homes
· Traffic fatalities or injuries on the highways
Alcohol Problems: Diseases and Medical Conditions
Alcoholism directly or indirectly causes a number of diseases, medical conditions, and health problems. Initially, the focus will be on the various types of cancer associated with alcoholism and then the discussion will switch to the non-cancerous ailments and illnesses that are related to this disease.

· Cardiovascular problems such as strokes, cardiomyopathy (damage to the heart muscle), heart failure, and high blood pressure
· Brain damage
· Mental confusion
· Problems with the immune system
· Nervous system damage
· Destruction of brain cells
· Diabetes
· Kidney and urinary tract infections
· Loss of intellectual abilities
· Cirrhosis of the liver
Alcohol Problems: Conclusion
As one reflects on the individual health problems and the social problems associated with alcoholism, it becomes apparent that as the disease progresses, not only does the alcoholic experience more frequent and severe alcohol problems but the disease also negatively and progressively affects family members, friends, relatives, coworkers, and society in general. In sum, the alcohol problems that are the consequence of alcoholism are extensive, damaging, extremely unhealthy, destructive, and in many instances, fatal.
Message to Alcoholics
Don't just sit there and think things are going to get better. Addiction doesn't get better. It gets worse until somebody dies. You need to take appropriate action by getting professional treatment and you need to take action now!
Alcohol Problems and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts
Did you know...
"Do you fail to inform your doctor that you are a regular drinker? Do you drink and drive, mix alcohol with over-the-counter or prescription medicine, or operate machinery" Do you drink alcohol while you are in charge of the lives of small children? Are you pregnant or are trying to become pregnant and drink? If you answered in the affirmative to any of these questions, you are taking risks with alcohol and you may be a problem drinker.""Research studies demonstrate that due to the fact that small amounts of alcohol from the mother can get into breast milk and passed on to the baby, and since excessive amounts of alcohol may impede the flow of milk from the breast, the March of Dimes strongly urges women to refrain from drinking alcohol while they are nursing."
"According to research, if you have tried to quit drinking - swore to yourself that you would never drink again - and found yourself a few days or a week later drinking again, you probably have a drinking problem. If you have tried to quit and cannot do so, you are no longer in control; alcohol is in control of your life.""The following represents mild to moderate psychological withdrawal symptoms that usually occur within 6 to 48 hours after the last alcoholic drink: fatigue, difficulty thinking clearly, rapid emotional changes, feeling nervous or jumpy, nightmares, anxiety, irritability, or depression."
"It is common for alcohol dependence to remain undetected for years. Both the availability of alcohol and the way it is used (the social patterns) appear to be major factors in influencing the likelihood of a person becoming alcohol dependent."
"Previous studies have shown that alcoholic women perform just as poorly as alcoholic men on thinking and memory tests, even though the women hadn't been drinking as long as the men had."
"Exposure to stress is one of the most powerful triggers of substance abuse in vulnerable individuals and of relapse in former addicts."
