Alcohol Problems That Result From Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
The problems caused by alcohol abuse and alcoholism are widespread as well as severe. Indeed, chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism are truly devastating, destructive, and debilitating medical conditions that have their effects on the person with the drinking problem, on the problem drinker's social network, namely on his or her friends, co-workers, neighbors, family members, and other relatives; and on the unfortunate "strangers" who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the problem drinker causes a traffic accident or fatality because he or she was driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Are Alcohol Problems and Drinking Problems Increasing?
Ironically, it has been known for thousands of years that abusing alcohol and excessive drinking lead to a number of alcohol problems, both social and personal. In spite of this "alcohol awareness," drinking problems and alcohol problems related to alcohol abuse and alcoholism not only exist, but they also seem to be escalating in the "developed" countries of the world.
The Range of Alcohol Problems and Drinking Problems
Depending on the amount of alcohol that is consumed and how quickly the alcohol is ingested by the problem drinker, alcohol problems can range from mild headaches and slight nausea at one extreme and alcohol poisoning, traffic fatalities, alcohol addiction, coma, and death at the other.
Alcohol Problems and Social Relationships
Alcoholism not only affects the person with the drinking problem, but it also negatively influences those who are closest to the problem drinker, namely his or her family, friends, other relatives, coworkers, and neighbors. The following list is a sample of the American social problems that result from alcohol abuse and alcoholism and that are manifested by problem drinkers:
- Work-related injuries and accidents
- Wife battering
- Codependent behavior in others
- Birth defects such as fetal alcohol syndrome
- Destroyed relationships
- Child abuse
- Destroyed lives
- Harm to the fetus while the mother is pregnant
- Broken, dysfunctional homes
- Traffic fatalities or injuries on the highways
Alcohol Problems: Diseases and Medical Conditions
Chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism directly or indirectly cause a number of diseases, medical conditions, and health problems. Initially, the focus will be on the various types of cancer associated with chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism and then the discussion will switch to the non-cancerous ailments and illnesses that are related to these medical conditions.

The following is a list of various types of cancer that are directly or indirectly caused by chronic alcohol abuse and/or alcohol addiction:

- Sever thiamine deficiency
- Death (from alcohol poisoning, excessive intoxication, and organ malfunction)
- Organ and system malfunction
- Korsakoff's syndrome (a memory disorder)
- Sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction and impotence in men

- Destruction of brain cells
- Diabetes

Alcohol Problems: Conclusion
As one reflects on the individual health problems and the social problems associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism, it becomes apparent that as these medical conditions progress, not only do problem drinkers experience more frequent and severe alcohol problems and drinking problems but the disease manifested by the person with the drinking problem also negatively and progressively affects the problem drinker's family members, friends, relatives, coworkers, and society in general. In sum, the alcohol problems and drinking problems that are the consequence of alcohol abuse and alcoholism are extensive, damaging, extremely unhealthy, destructive, and in many instances, fatal.

"According to the alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature, approximately 500 million work days are lost each year to alcoholism in the United States."
"Substance abuse research demonstrates the fact that a man who has more than four drinks per occasion or more than 14 drinks per week is drinking too much
"U.S. alcohol abuse research scientists have discovered that people who stop using other drugs (such as marijuana, Oxycontin, or heroin) at the same time they quit drinking alcohol, might experience excessive withdrawal problems. These individuals, consequently, should see a doctor before they quit their addictive habits."
"According to alcohol abuse and alcoholism research, long-term alcohol use may physically affect the brain. Studies have reported less blood flow in the front lobes of the brain, which may reflect links and problems to deeper levels in the brain."
"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug or an alcohol abuse problem."
"As children move from adolescence to young adulthood, they encounter dramatic physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes. Developmental transitions, such as puberty and increasing independence, have been associated with alcohol use. So in a sense, just being an adolescent may be a key risk factor not only for starting to drink but also for drinking dangerously."
"Many people turn to the use of alcohol for pain relief and due to its ability to depress the central nervous system and slow down the brain and the nervous system. As a result, drinking alcohol for many people delivers a certain amount of pain relief."
"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research demonstrates the fact that if you consume alcoholic beverages, it's important to know whether your drinking patterns are safe, risky or harmful. Answering these questions will take only a few minutes, and will generate personalized results based on your age, gender and drinking patterns."
"Most alcohol and drug treatment centers have counselors who are trained to help families prepare for the confrontation, which always takes place in a "controlled" environment, specifically selected to put the alcoholic in a position in which he or she is most likely to listen and agree to treatment."
"Lost productivity from alcohol-related absenteeism, illness and premature exiting of the workplace, due to death and forced retirement, amounts to more than $70 billion each year in the United States."
"In a study called Project CHOICES, University of Virginia Health System researchers found that a few non-judgmental, non-confrontational counseling sessions had a significant impact on women at high risk for binge drinking, unplanned pregnancy, and exposure to alcohol during pregnancy."
"No matter how obvious the problem seems to those around the alcoholic, the alcohol dependent person loudly denies that drinking is the cause, and usually blames the circumstances or people around them instead."
"U.S. alcohol abuse research scientists have discovered that people who stop using other drugs (such as marijuana, Oxycontin, or heroin) at the same time they quit drinking alcohol, might experience excessive withdrawal problems. These individuals, consequently, should see a doctor before they quit their addictive habits."
"Studies have shown that inpatient detoxification programs are more effective and longer lasting than outpatient detox programs. The important issue here, however, is the following: the more severe the alcohol-related withdrawal symptoms, the more likely that inpatient detox programs should be used."
"According to alcohol abuse and alcoholism research, long-term alcohol use may physically affect the brain. Studies have reported less blood flow in the front lobes of the brain, which may reflect links and problems to deeper levels in the brain."
"Psychological addiction occurs when the cravings for a drug are emotional or psychological. People who are psychologically addicted typically feel overcome by the desire to have the drug in question."
"Your success in treatment for alcohol abuse and dependence is strongly linked to admitting that you have a problem and your desire to stop drinking. Supportive treatments, such as counseling, won't be successful if you continue to drink."
"Studies have shown that inpatient detoxification programs are more effective and longer lasting than outpatient detox programs. The important issue here, however, is the following: the more severe the alcohol-related withdrawal symptoms, the more likely that inpatient detox programs should be used."
"A definition of alcoholism: Alcoholism is a degenerative disease that includes the following symptoms: craving, tolerance, physical dependence, and loss of control."
"According to alcohol abuse and alcoholism research, television advertising changes attitudes about drinking. Young people report more positive feelings about drinking and their own likelihood to drink after viewing alcohol ads."
"Based on the findings in various alcoholism research studies, if an individual has a family history of alcoholism or alcohol abuse, he or she would be well advised to totally refrain from drinking alcohol. Though this advice seems a bit "extreme," it will, however, prevent the person from experiencing the host of alcohol-related problems that are typically suffered by chronic alcohol abusers and alcoholics."
"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug abuse problem."

"Codependency is defined by a group of symptoms that typically occur in those who live with someone afflicted with alcoholism or with some other addiction."
"Alcoholism is a disease that affects every member of the family, to the extent that the kids who make it into the Alateen rooms report they generally have more problems dealing with the non-drinking parent than they do the alcoholic."
"Alcohol research has shown that in extreme instances, when the person's well-being and health become endangered, a professional alcohol abuse intervention may be seen as the best chance to "reach" the problem drinker. Even with such good intentions of those who care and with expert supervision, however, alcohol abuse interventions can fail and cause more problems than they solve."
"According to the 2004 SAMHSA National Survey on Drug Use & Health, alcoholism and alcohol abuse were more common among adults who were 18 years old or older who were never married as compared with adults the same age who were widowed, separated, or divorced. Does this mean that involvement in relationships reduces a person's risk for alcoholism or alcohol abuse?"
"Your doctor needs to know you're going through alcohol withdrawal so he or she can make sure it doesn't lead to more serious health problems."
"According to the alcoholism research literature, alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a group of symptoms exhibited by people who suddenly stop drinking alcohol after a pattern of repeated and excessive ingestion. These symptoms can range from mild to moderate to severe and include both physical and emotional components."
"Substance abuse research demonstrates the fact that a man who has more than four drinks per occasion or more than 14 drinks per week is drinking too much. Simply stated: this man is abusing alcohol."
"According to alcohol and alcoholism research, by the time U.S. teenagers reach driving age they will have seen 75,000 ads for alcohol."
"A dysfunctional family is a family in which misbehavior, abuse, or conflict by individual family members takes place on a regular basis, leading other members of the family to enable, reinforce, and perpetuate such behaviors."
"An estimated 6.6 million American children under 18 live in households with at least one alcoholic parent."
"It is important for drinkers to understand that when they frequently and regularly engage in abusive drinking such as binge drinking, they increase the risk of becoming alcohol dependent. This fact is especially difficult for young people, many of whom feel that they are 'bullet-proof' and in total control of their drinking."

- I can not say that I have done very many things in my life that I am proud of but defeating alcoholism is one. We have a vast population and unfortunately very few survive. It is with the help of my fellows and by the grace of God that I sit behind this computer screen today. I am doing my part in this vicious circle known as the alcoholic life to prevent the tragic events of my life from ever falling upon the shoulders of another. This is a disease that kills everyday, one way or another alcohol is related to many of the world's tragedies. I feel as if I could not leave this life without first sharing my knowledge of living with another suffering sole so they may too find what it means to really live.
