Alcohol Problems That Result From Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

The problems caused by alcohol abuse and alcoholism are widespread as well as damaging. Indeed, chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism are truly devastating, destructive, and debilitating diseases that have their effects on the problem drinker; on the problem drinker's social network, namely on his friends, co-workers, neighbors, family members, and other relatives; and on the unfortunate "strangers" who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the problem drinker causes a traffic accident or fatality because he or she was driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Are Alcohol Problems Increasing?

Ironically, it has been known for thousands of years that abusing alcohol and excessive drinking lead to a number of alcohol problems, both social and personal. In spite of this "alcohol awareness," drinking problems and alcohol problems related to alcohol abuse and alcoholism not only exist, but they also seem to be escalating in the "developed" countries of the world.

The Range of Alcohol Problems

Depending on the amount of alcohol that is consumed and how quickly the alcohol is ingested, alcohol problems can range from mild headaches and slight nausea at one extreme and alcohol poisoning, traffic fatalities, alcohol addiction, coma, and death at the other.

Alcohol Problems and Social Relationships

Alcoholism not only affects the alcoholic, but it also negatively influences those who are closest to the alcoholic, namely his family, friends, other relatives, coworkers, and neighbors. The following list is a sample of the American social problems that result from alcohol abuse and alcoholism:

  • Work-related injuries and accidents

  • Wife battering

  • Codependent behavior in others

  • Birth defects such as fetal alcohol syndrome

  • Destroyed relationships

  • Child abuse

  • Destroyed lives

  • Harm to the fetus while the mother is pregnant

  • Broken, dysfunctional homes

  • Traffic fatalities or injuries on the highways

Alcohol Problems:  Diseases and Medical Conditions

Chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism directly or indirectly cause a number of diseases, medical conditions, and health problems. Initially, the focus will be on the various types of cancer associated with chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism and then the discussion will switch to the non-cancerous ailments and illnesses that are related to these medical conditions.

The following is a list of various types of cancer that are directly or indirectly caused by chronic alcohol abuse and/or alcohol addiction:

  • Kidneys

  • Esophagus

  • Liver

  • Larynx

  • Stomach

  • Colon

  • Rectum

Alcohol Problems: Non-Cancerous Medical Conditions

The following is a list non-cancerous health problems, medical conditions, and diseases that are directly or indirectly caused by alcohol dependency and/or chronic alcohol abuse:

  • Sever thiamine deficiency

  • Death (from alcohol poisoning, excessive intoxication, and organ malfunction)

  • Organ and system malfunction

  • Korsakoff's syndrome (a memory disorder)

  • Sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction and impotence in men

  • Pneumonia

  • Dehydration

  • Ulcers from the perforation of the stomach and the intestines

  • Coma

  • Alcohol withdrawal symptoms when the alcoholic stops drinking

  • Alcohol Poisoning

  • Pancreatitis

  • Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach)

  • Inflammation of the digestive system

  • Memory loss

  • Impaired learning ability

  • Kidney failure

  • Vitamin A deficiency (which can cause night blindness)

  • Numbness of the feet and hands

  • Vitamin deficiencies (such as folate, selenium, riboflavin, and vitamin B6)

  • Wernicke's disease (a memory disorder)

  • Infections

  • Vitamin D deficiency (which can result in bone fractures)

  • Cardiovascular problems such as strokes, cardiomyopathy (damage to the heart muscle), heart failure, and high blood pressure

  • Brain damage

  • Mental confusion

  • Problems with the immune system

  • Nervous system damage

  • Destruction of brain cells

  • Diabetes

  • Kidney and urinary tract infections

  • Loss of intellectual abilities

  • Cirrhosis of the liver

Alcohol Problems: Conclusion

As one reflects on the individual health problems and the social problems associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism, it becomes apparent that as these medical conditions progress, not only does the problem drinker experience more frequent and severe alcohol problems and drinking problems but the disease also negatively and progressively affects family members, friends, relatives, coworkers, and society in general. In sum, the alcohol problems that are the consequence of alcohol abuse and alcoholism are extensive, damaging, extremely unhealthy, destructive, and in many instances, fatal.

"In the U.S., the great majority of alcoholics go unrecognized by physicians and health care professionals.
