Important Alcohol Recovery Information About Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

Depending on the scope of the program, alcohol recovery refers to the social, psychotherapeutic, medical, and/or educational treatment processes required for a person with a drinking problem to address his or her drinking problems, stop drinking, and stop the vicious cycle of alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

It is important to point out that according to a review of the alcohol abuse and alcoholism literature, unless problem drinkers receive some type of professional alcoholism treatment, recovery from chronic alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction is extremely difficult.

The Major Goal of Alcohol Recovery

The ultimate goal of alcohol recovery is to help the problem drinker stop his or her abusive and/or addictive behavior so that he or she can avoid the social, emotional, physical, legal, and financial consequences that are usually caused by alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

The Need for Healthy and Positive Change

If you are a "problem drinker" such as an alcoholic or a chronic alcohol abuser, isn't it time for you to make a positive and healthy change in your life, address your drinking problems, and reclaim your life by becoming sober?

Alcohol Recovery: Do What Is Necessary

With all of the drinking problems associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism, it makes sense for a problem drinker to learn how to abstain from drinking, how to recover from alcohol addiction and chronic alcohol abuse, and how to restore his or her life.

If abstaining from alcohol means learning about more alcohol recovery information, joining different alcohol recovery groups, receiving inpatient alcohol detox treatment, or taking medications such as Antabuse, then this is what problem drinkers will have to do in order to overcome their drinking problems and recover from alcohol abuse and/or alcoholism.

Conclusion:  Find an Alcohol Recovery Program That Works For You

Do you have a drinking problem?  It does not necessarily make a difference whether the person chooses a more traditional program such as the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program, the SMART program, or one of the many other professional recovery programs.

What matters most is the following:  problem drinkers need to acknowledge that they have a drinking problem, they need to want to quit drinking, and they need to find an alcohol treatment program that works for them if they are to attain alcohol recovery, become sober, and end the vicious cycle of chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

Alcohol Recovery and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts

Did you know...

"According to research, if you have tried to quit drinking - swore to yourself that you would never drink again - and found yourself a few days or a week later drinking again, you probably have a drinking problem. If you have tried to quit and cannot do so, you are no longer in control; alcohol is in control of your life."

"According to alcoholism research, most alcoholics who seek help on their own volition have at least one relapse before they obtain long-term sobriety."

"Research shows that when appropriate treatment is given, and when alcohol addicts follow their prescribed program, alcohol addiction treatment can work."

"Although the risk is higher with heavy alcohol use, scientific research has shown that any amount of alcohol may affect your unborn baby. You can prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder by not drinking at all while you are pregnant. Many doctors suggest just that."

"According to the substance abuse research, children who are drinking alcohol by 7th grade are more likely to report academic problems, substance use, and delinquent behavior in both middle school and high school. By young adulthood, early alcohol use was associated with employment problems, other substance abuse, and criminal and other violent behavior."

"Although there is no 'magic pill' that will cure alcoholism, there are medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration that are used to help people who have stopped drinking to remain sober."

"According to a 2007 Science Daily report, kids who drink to help them deal with anger or frustration issues are not likely to benefit from a prevention program developed for kids who are just experimenting with alcohol."

"According to U.S. research, about 10 to 20% of the people who drink heavily eventually develop cirrhosis of the liver."

"Up to 40 percent of U.S. industrial fatalities and 47 percent of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol consumption and alcoholism."

"In one U.S. study, almost one-fourth of ninth graders reported binge drinking (having had five or more drinks on one occasion) in the past month."

"A dysfunctional family is a family in which misbehavior, abuse, or conflict by individual family members takes place on a regular basis, leading other members of the family to enable, reinforce, and perpetuate such behaviors."

"U.S. research shows that many people do not go to a doctor specifically for alcohol problems but seek treatment for physical conditions (such as cirrhosis) that result from long-term alcohol use. Your doctor might ask you questions about your drinking to help see whether alcohol abuse is the cause of a condition like cirrhosis."

"According to the alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature, in the U.S., more than 40% of those who start drinking at age 14 or younger become alcohol dependent."

"According to a growing group of substance abuse experts, behavioral and biological explanations of drug abuse need to be given equal weight and integrated with each other if a deeper understanding of the root causes of drug addiction are to be found and more effective treatments are to be developed."

"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug abuse problem."

"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research demonstrates that low self-esteem and depression make an individual more vulnerable to excessive drinking and alcohol dependency."

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year in the United States, between 1,300 and 8,000 babies are born with fetal alcohol syndrome."

"Codependency is defined by a group of symptoms that typically occur in those who live with someone afflicted with alcoholism or with some other addiction."

"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug or an alcohol abuse problem."

"Alcoholism is a disease that affects every member of the family, to the extent that the kids who make it into the Alateen rooms report they generally have more problems dealing with the non-drinking parent than they do the alcoholic."

"According to alcoholism research, there are higher rates of alcoholism in the unemployed, laborers, those of lower socioeconomic status, those that drop out of high school, those who entered college but failed to earn a degree, and those under more stress."

"Substance abuse research demonstrates the fact that a man who has more than four drinks per occasion or more than 14 drinks per week is drinking too much. Simply stated: this man is abusing alcohol."

"If you drink to an excess, you may consume more alcohol than your body can metabolize and eliminate. Under these circumstances, the body and the brain may become "overloaded" and result in alcohol poisoning. If the amount of alcohol is great enough, the body and the brain will 'shut down' and the person can die as a result."

"In some areas, part of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face to face with victims, who tell their painful stories of how a drunk driver changed their lives forever. The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."

"Teaching teenagers about the negative effects of alcohol abuse by telling them to 'Just Say No' is simply not enough. This phrase fails to acknowledge the stress and anxiety that many teens experience on a daily basis. 'Just say no' is too simplistic and as such, tunes teens out. Rather than telling teenagers to simply refrain from drinking alcohol, them about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse and the emotional, physical, and mental problems they can expect if they engage in abusive and excessive drinking."

"By the time they enter preschool, most children have seen adults smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol either in real life or in the media, or both. Children today are exposed to illegal drugs and drinking alcohol as early as elementary school, so it's never too early to talk with your child about the negative consequences of drug abuse and alcohol abuse."

"Getting an attorney in hopes of getting a reduced DUI sentence or pleading to a reduced charge is a waste of time and money in many states. The penalties that the judge must impose are mandated by state law. In some states, even first offenders may be facing lengthy license suspensions and a weekend in jail."

"Rather than focusing on their drinking as the cause of the many problems they face, alcoholics, during the second stage of alcoholism, start to blame others and things external to themselves."

"Many people only think of a 'skid-row bum' when they think of someone with an alcohol problem. This is the end stage of alcohol problems, when a person has lost his or her family, job and health because of alcohol abuse. You don't reach this stage overnight."

    Hi Denman,
Thanks for looking at my One True Vision lens - both for looking and for serving as a reminder that I want to update it!

Your alcoholism recovery site is great - good info, practical and concrete. As a psychotherapist, I'd like to add that therapy can be an important component of recovery, in that it allows the person to discover why he/she has certin vulnerabillities to addictive behavior; and helps him or her manage personality characteristics that may be hindering or damaging relationships. My One True Vision program can be a relatively non-threatening way to get started on the exciting task of self-discovery. If you're interested I can send you some information about it.

God bless you for the hopeful message you're spreading!
