Alcohol Rehab Facts and Information Problem Drinkers Need to Understand

Depending on the scope of the program, alcohol rehab refers to the medical, psychotherapeutic, educational, and/or social alcohol rehab treatment processes required for alcohol abuse and/or alcoholism recovery.

It is worth emphasizing that the ultimate goal of alcohol rehab is to help the problem drinker stop his or her abusive drinking so that he or she can avoid the physical, psychological, social, legal, and financial consequences that are typically caused by chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Obviously, a good grasp of alcoholism and alcohol abuse facts is helpful for the alcohol rehab patient.

The goal of alcohol rehab is to stabilize the individual, get him or her safely through the withdrawal process (if necessary), and to provide counseling and support so that he or she maintains progress toward alcohol recovery.

Most Alcoholics Who Quit Drinking Experience Mild or Moderate Withdrawals

Approximately 95% of the alcohol dependent people who abruptly quit drinking experience mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms and can usually be treated on an out-patient basis by a healthcare professional.  The remaining 5% of the alcohol dependent individuals who suffer from withdrawal symptoms, however, experience symptoms so excessive that they must be treated in a hospital, alcohol treatment clinic, or in an alcohol rehab facility that specializes in alcohol withdrawal treatment.  It is important to emphasize, however, that all people who experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms need professional treatment.

The Goal of Alcohol Rehab

It is worth emphasizing that the ultimate goal of alcohol rehab is to help the alcoholic or alcohol abuser stop his or her hazardous drinking so that he or she can avoid the physical, psychological, social, legal, and financial consequences that are typically caused by chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism.  According to the recent alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature, however, this is apparently easier said than done.

The Alcoholic Rehab Process

The alcoholic rehab process has two focal points:  physical dependency and psychological dependency. Treating physical dependency usually involves managing the alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe manner and alcohol detoxification, a process that is intended to rid the body of alcohol.  Psychological dependency usually involves teaching the alcoholic new ways of interacting in an alcohol-free environment.

Conclusion:  Finding An Alcohol Rehab Program That Works

It really does not make any significant difference whether the person chooses a more traditional alcohol rehab program such as the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program or one of the many other professional alcohol rehab programs at various alcohol treatment clinics and alcohol treatment facilities. According to the alcohol abuse and alcoholism research literature, what matters most is the following:  alcohol abusers and alcoholics need to acknowledge that they have a drinking problem, they must want to quit drinking, and they need to find an alcohol rehabilitation program that works for them.

Alcohol Rehab and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts

Did you know...

"According to alcoholism research, there are higher rates of alcoholism in the unemployed, laborers, those of lower socioeconomic status, those that drop out of high school, those who entered college but failed to earn a degree, and those under more stress."

"Does drinking strong coffee or taking a cold shower have an effect on the person who is drunk? The answer is yes - the result being an alert, cold, and wet drunk. Time, and only time can sober a person up."

"Many states have passed Habitual Violator laws, which provide felony penalties for three DUI convictions. These offenders lose many of their civil rights -- like being able to vote or own a weapon -- as well as their driver's license permanently or for many years."

"Alcohol is typically found in the offender, victim or both, in about half of all U.S. homicides and serious assaults, as well as in a high percentage of sex-related crimes, robberies, and incidents of domestic violence, and alcohol-related problems are disproportionately found among both juvenile and adult criminal offenders."

"It is common for people who have problems with alcohol to have mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety. People who abuse alcohol are more likely to also have a problem with other substances, such as tobacco or illegal drugs."

"According to a 1995 U.S. national survey of fourth through sixth graders who read the Weekly Reader, 30 percent of the students surveyed reported that they received 'a lot' of pressure from their classmates to drink beer."

"According to the DMV statistical archives, one out of every 130 licensed drivers in the United States has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. One out of 130 doesn't sound like a significant number until you "do the math." If there are 130 million licensed drivers in the U.S., then one million of them have been arrested for "driving under the influence." Is there any wonder why so many alcohol and/or drug related traffic fatalities happen every year in this country?"

"The 2004 State of Maryland Adolescent Survey indicates that 13.5 percent of the State's licensed adolescent drivers reported driving under the influence of marijuana on three or more occasions."

"SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that in 2003, an estimated 13.2% of veterans reported driving while under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs in the past year compared with 12.2% of comparable non-veterans."

"U.S. research studies on twins strongly suggest a very strong genetic link to alcoholism."

"As discovered by U.S. researchers, screening for problem drinking and alcoholism needs to become an integral part of the routine health screening questionnaire for adolescents and all adults, particularly women of child-bearing age, because of the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome."

"For those individuals who are trying to figure out if their drinking has reached the level of 'problem drinking,' there are some quick and easy questions that are readily available might give you the answers. From a different perspective, however, if you have to ask about your drinking behavior, you probably have a problem because 'typical' drinkers don't usually wonder if their drinking is a problem. In fact, most 'problem drinkers' don't even think about it."

"Substance abuse research shows that hangovers are a symptom of abusive and excessive drinking. Although hangovers are not necessarily an indication of addiction, they certainly are one of the symptoms of alcohol abuse. The following represents some of the manifestations of hangovers: dizziness, headache, thirst, nausea, fatigue, and vomiting."

"Recent U.S. research demonstrates that every individual who is experiencing alcohol withdrawal should receive professional alcoholism treatment."

"It is important to note that alcohol overdose doesn't only occur from any one heavy drinking incident, but may also occur from a constant infusion of alcohol in the blood stream."

"Substance abuse research studies have demonstrated that inpatient detox programs are more effective and longer lasting than outpatient detoxification programs. The important point to emphasize, however, is the following: the more severe the alcohol-related withdrawal symptoms, the more likely that inpatient detox programs should be employed."

"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug or an alcohol abuse problem."

"Mixing alcohol and drugs not only compounds the drug and alcohol problems that the abuser experiences, but doing so increases the person's need for professional alcohol and drug treatment."

"U.S alcohol abuse and alcoholism research has shown that chronic alcohol abusers have a particularly high risk for adverse side effects from consuming alcohol while taking certain antibiotics. These side effects include flushing, headache, nausea, and vomiting."

"According to one study, almost 11% of U.S. 8th-graders, 22% of 10th-graders, and 27% of 12th-graders report binge drinking (five drinks in a row in the last two weeks)."

"According to a 2007 Science Daily report, kids who drink to help them deal with anger or frustration issues are not likely to benefit from a prevention program developed for kids who are just experimenting with alcohol."

"According to the substance abuse literature, prevention messages can make a positive difference. In a word, these messages can convey information to change people's attitudes about drug use and alcohol drinking behavior in a positive manner."

"In the United States, the correlation between the battering of women and alcohol abuse is the highest for men who believe that male control and power over women are acceptable in various situations."

"Substance abuse research demonstrates that people who are entering substance abuse treatment, as well as their families and friends, may benefit by becoming aware of those 'Risk Factors of Dropping Out' associated with dropping out and plan accordingly."

"Alcohol withdrawal symptoms rarely occur in people who only drink once in a while. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms usually occur in people who have been drinking heavily for weeks or months and then suddenly stop drinking."

"Through scientific advances we now know much more about how exactly drugs work in the brain, and we also know that drug addiction can be successfully treated to help people stop abusing drugs and resume their productive lives."

"According to alcoholism research, there are higher rates of alcoholism in the unemployed, laborers, those of lower socioeconomic status, those that drop out of high school, those who entered college but failed to earn a degree, and those under more stress."

"In the early stage of alcoholism, drinking is no longer social but becomes a means of psychological escape from inhibitions, problems, and stress. Stated differently, early in the disease a person starts to depend on the mood altering capabilities of alcohol."

The alcohol abuse and alcoholism research shows that as people age, it takes fewer drinks for them to become intoxicated. Moreover, research also shows that up to one-half of the 100 most prescribed drugs for older people react adversely with alcohol."

"According to researcher Erica Austin, a professor at Washington State University, decisions about drinking are made over time and teens and pre-teens are definitely influenced by being exposed to ads since childhood."

"The alcohol abuse and alcoholism research shows that as people age, it takes fewer drinks for them to become intoxicated. Moreover, research also shows that up to one-half of the 100 most prescribed drugs for older people react adversely with alcohol."

"Alcoholism research has shown that for drinkers who are interested in finding out if their drinking has crossed the line from abuse to alcoholism or alcohol addiction, there is a common-sense question that might provide the answer to this question. In a word, if an individual has to ask the above question, he or she probably has a serious drinking problem that more likely than not may be alcoholism. Typical drinkers usually don't wonder if their drinking is a problem. Indeed, they rarely, if ever, think about it."

I can not say that I have done very many things in my life that I am proud of but defeating alcoholism is one. We have a vast population and unfortunately very few survive. It is with the help of my fellows and by the grace of God that I sit behind this computer screen today. I am doing my part in this vicious circle known as the alcoholic life to prevent the tragic events of my life from ever falling upon the shoulders of another. This is a disease that kills everyday, one way or another alcohol is related to many of the world's tragedies. I feel as if I could not leave this life without first sharing my knowledge of living with another suffering sole so they may too find what it means to really live.
