Why Alcoholism Statistics Are Needed

Alcoholism is a progressive degenerative disease that includes the following four symptoms:  craving, physical dependence, the loss of control, and tolerance.  There are a number of various issues regarding alcoholism that need to be studied in order to better understand this destructive and insidious disease.

Focusing on the alcoholism statistics that are available, it is asserted, is one of the more instructive ways to analyze alcoholism, its associated factors, and the various alcoholism signs that are associated with this disease.  From another perspective, moreover, emphasizing alcoholism statistics can also help some people realize how serious their drinking problems are and, as a consequence, help them pursue alcohol recovery.

One more thing. It is important to underscore the fact that when the term "alcoholism" is used, this also means "alcohol addiction," "alcohol dependence," or "alcohol dependency."

The Importance of Clearly Stated Alcoholism Statistics

Unfortunately, the full extent of the dangerous and widespread effects of alcoholism are not typically comprehended until various statistics on alcoholism are clearly stated.  As a result, the following alcoholism statistics, retrieved from various online surveys and research studies, will be listed.

Examples of Important Alcoholism Statistics

  • Alcoholism can increase the risk for certain cancers, especially those of the throat, voice box (larynx), liver, colon, kidneys, rectum, and the esophagus.  Excessive drinking can also cause immune system problems, brain damage, harm to the fetus during pregnancy, and cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Approximately 43% of American adults have had a child, parent, sibling or spouse who is or was an alcoholic.
  • 6.6 million American children under the age of 18 live in homes with at least one alcoholic parent.
  • More than one-half of American adults have a close family member who has or has had alcohol addiction.
  • More than seven percent of the population ages 18 years and older -- nearly 13.8 million Americans -- have problems with drinking, including 8.1 million people who suffer from alcoholism.

Teenage Alcoholism Statistics

The following represents some examples of U.S. teenage alcoholism statistics.

  • In one survey, 50% of high school seniors reported that they drank alcohol in the past 30 days, with 32% of them reporting that they were drunk at least once.
  • According to one U.S. survey, almost 20% of 8th-graders, and 41% of 10th-graders have been drunk at least once.
  • The average U.S. 18-year-old has seen 100,000 television commercials encouraging him or her to drink.
  • In 2002, U.S. alcoholism statistics reported that 2.6 million binge drinkers were between the ages of 12 and 17.
  • According to one U.S. study, almost 11% of 8th-graders, 22% of 10th-graders, and 27% of 12th-graders report binge drinking (five drinks in a row in the last two weeks).

Alcoholism Statistics:  Conclusion

It is evident from a review of current statistics about alcoholism that alcoholism is beyond doubt an equal opportunity destroyer.  That is, alcoholism adversely affects people from every religious affiliation, race, gender, income group, occupation, political party, and nationality.

After reading some of the appalling statistics about alcoholism (an effort by the way that points to a number of signs of alcoholism), it is now more understandable why various people have labeled alcoholism as "the silent stalker" and "the silent killer."

Also keep in mind that when the term "alcoholism" is used, this also means alcohol dependency," "alcohol addiction," or "alcohol dependence."

"According to the substance abuse research literature, at first, the individual drinks alcohol to reduce emotional or physical pain. After neuroadaptation has caused the brain to adjust to the influx of alcohol, however, the individual drinks not to reduce pain but rather to function on a daily basis. In short, abusing alcohol and drugs change the brain that in turn leads to compulsive and uncontrollable drug abuse and/or drinking."

"In one U.S. study, the overwhelming majority of surveyed youth (74% of 8-17 year-olds; 74% of 8-12 year-olds; 74% of 13-17 year-olds) cite their parents as the primary influence in their decisions about whether they drink alcohol or not."

"Those who are alcohol dependent feel a need to drink consistently in order to feel normal, or to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol dependence can be physical, psychological, or both."

"In a relatively wide-spread and extensive study that was undertaken in 38 States and the District of Columbia, the cities and towns with the greatest numbers of drinking establishments such as bars, nightclubs, and taverns, had the highest rates of alcoholism. What an absolute shock! Now really surprise me and tell me that the areas with the highest expenditure for alcohol advertisements also had the highest rates of alcoholism! The bottom line: higher alcohol advertising costs + more drinking establishments = higher rates of alcoholism."
