Important Information for "Problem Drinkers" About Alcoholism Symptoms

As increasing numbers of individuals experience various signs and symptoms of alcoholism, more and more people are asking how they can better cope with or significantly reduce these signs or symptoms.

Regarding alcoholism symptoms, it is important to point out that psychological, social, and spiritual symptoms of alcoholism can be just as painful and problematic as the better-known physical symptoms.

One more point of interest. It is important to highlight the fact that when the term "alcoholism" is used, this also means "alcohol dependence," "alcohol addiction," or "alcohol dependency."

Psychological Symptoms of Alcoholism

When the topic of "symptoms of alcoholism" is discussed, many people focus on the physical symptoms of alcoholism and exclude many of the other kinds of alcoholism symptoms.

As a result, it is important to emphasize the point that other alcoholism symptoms such as spiritual, social, and psychological symptoms of alcoholism exist and can be just as debilitating and agonizing as physical alcoholism symptoms.

The following represents some of the psychological symptoms of alcoholism:

Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a group of symptoms exhibited by people who quit drinking alcohol after a pattern of excessive and continuous consumption.  These symptoms can range from mild to moderate to severe and include both psychological and behavioral aspects.

  • Delirium tremens (DTs)
  • Visual hallucinations
  • Fever
  • Seizures
  • Blackouts

Symptoms of Alcoholism:  Conclusion

The symptoms of alcoholism affect people when they drink, when they try to quit drinking, and when they go through the recovery process and, regrettably, experience withdrawal symptoms.  When suffering from alcoholism symptoms, keep the following in mind.

First, alcoholism leads to a series of damaging and painful spiritual, social, emotional, and physical symptoms that will get progressively worse unless the individual stops drinking.

Second, an essential step in the recovery process is acknowledging that drinking has become a problem AND also having the desire and the will to stop drinking

Third, once the alcoholic reaches this point, the next problem to solve is how to best handle the withdrawal symptoms that commonly follow.

Fourth, the most effective and logical way to cope with and overcome alcohol withdrawal symptoms is to immediately see a doctor or a healthcare professional so that he or she can assess the severity of the problem and develop the most effective and appropriate form of treatment.

As a final note, it is important to point out that when the term "alcoholism" is used, this also means "alcohol addiction," "alcohol dependency," or "alcohol dependence."

Alcoholism Symptoms and Other Alcoholism-Related Quick Facts

Did you know...

"Depression is a common cause of alcoholism as the depressed person seeks a way out of their problems or a relief from insomnia. Unfortunately, alcohol is itself a depressant, so the problem is only compounded."

"The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, and smoke pot, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug or an alcohol abuse problem."

"Substance abuse research demonstrates that counselors and therapists who bond with patients through empathy, rather than confrontation, are powerful motivating influences in alcohol treatment."

"About half of U.S. state prison inmates and 40% of federal prisoners incarcerated for committing violent crimes report they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of their offense."

"Alcoholism and medical research have discovered that drinking alcohol can be hazardous in smaller amounts if it is consumed along with the following drugs: street drugs such as heroin and opium; sedatives such as tranquilizers and barbiturates; anti-seizure medications such as phenobarbital; and narcotic pain medications such as Codeine, Codeine derivatives, and Darvocet. Not only this, but mixing alcohol and drugs not only compounds the drug and alcohol problems that the abuser experiences, but doing so increases the person's need for professional alcohol and drug treatment."

"Fortunately, research is helping to define the barriers that exist in accessing care and achieving recovery from alcohol abuse and alcoholism."

"According to the substance abuse research literature, at first, the individual drinks alcohol to reduce emotional or physical pain. After neuroadaptation has caused the brain to adjust to the influx of alcohol, however, the individual drinks not to reduce pain but rather to function on a daily basis. In short, abusing alcohol and drugs change the brain that in turn leads to compulsive and uncontrollable drug abuse and/or drinking."

"In some areas, part of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face to face with victims, who tell their painful stories of how a drunk driver changed their lives forever. The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."

"In some areas, part of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face to face with victims, who tell their painful stories of how a drunk driver changed their lives forever. The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."

"If drinking alcohol is going to affect your ability to have children, not to mention the negative health consequences that alcohol presents to you who will be having the child, why not simply abstain from drinking alcohol while you are trying to have a child, while you are carrying the child, and while you are breast feeding the child?"

"Several U.S. studies have shown that about half of alcoholics who have successfully undergone detoxification will relapse within 6-12 months."

"A definition of alcoholism: Alcoholism is a degenerative disease that includes the following symptoms: craving, tolerance, physical dependence, and loss of control."

"Studies have shown that inpatient detoxification programs are more effective and longer lasting than outpatient detox programs. The important issue here, however, is the following: the more severe the alcohol-related withdrawal symptoms, the more likely that inpatient detox programs should be used."

"Since nothing can change what took place in the past, it is hoped that all of the state and federal prisoners who abused drugs and/or alcohol in the past have access to alcoholism and alcohol abuse programs as well as to substance abuse and addiction treatment while they are still in prison."

"Based on the findings in various alcoholism research studies, if an individual has a family history of alcoholism or alcohol abuse, he or she would be well advised to totally refrain from drinking alcohol. Though this advice seems a bit "extreme," it will, however, prevent the person from experiencing the host of alcohol-related problems that are typically suffered by chronic alcohol abusers and alcoholics."

"According to alcohol abuse statistics, people older than 65 years and having more than seven drinks per week or more than three drinks per occasion are drinking too much."

"Although 40 percent of U.S. college freshmen say they binge drink (5 or more drinks on one occasion), a new study has found that up to 20 percent of male students go far beyond the binge-drinking threshold, consuming more than 10 or 15 drinks per drinking session."

"According to a report published by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, policy-makers need to step up enforcement of underage drinking laws and finance additional treatment programs for adolescents."

"Those who are alcohol dependent feel a need to drink consistently in order to feel normal, or to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol dependence can be physical, psychological, or both."

"Alcohol abuse and alcoholism research demonstrates the fact that if you consume alcoholic beverages, it's important to know whether your drinking patterns are safe, risky or harmful. Answering these questions will take only a few minutes, and will generate personalized results based on your age, gender and drinking patterns."

"According to alcoholism research, there are higher rates of alcoholism in the unemployed, laborers, those of lower socioeconomic status, those that drop out of high school, those who entered college but failed to earn a degree, and those under more stress."

"According to researcher Erica Austin, a professor at Washington State University, decisions about drinking are made over time and teens and pre-teens are definitely influenced by being exposed to ads since childhood."

"Dealing with alcohol abuse is difficult, not only for the alcohol abuser but also for friends, family members, and even for coworkers. Unfortunately, as the abusive drinking progresses, so do the alcohol-related problems that affect virtually every facet in the drinker's life."

"Alcoholism and alcohol abuse research has revealed that in order to make a successful recovery, the alcoholic needs new ways of thinking and responding in order to cope with circumstances and difficulties that will certainly arise. Factors such as returning to the same places or to the same environment, hearing a certain song, seeing someone you used to party with, or even relatively insignificant things such as certain objects or smells can trigger emotional distress and "flashbacks" to the days when you used to abuse alcohol on a regular basis. This psychological stress can actually act as a road block, thus inhibiting the your sobriety and recovery."

"Those who are drug dependent feel a need to abuse drugs consistently in order to feel "normal," or to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Drug dependence can be physical, psychological, or both."

"If people are unwilling to be honest about their drinking habits, it is difficult, if not impossible, to accurately diagnose the level to which they abuse alcohol or are addicted to alcohol."

"According to a 2007 Science Daily report, kids who drink to help them deal with anger or frustration issues are not likely to benefit from a prevention program developed for kids who are just experimenting with alcohol."

"If you drink to an excess, you may consume more alcohol than your body can metabolize and eliminate. Under these circumstances, the body and the brain may become "overloaded" and result in alcohol poisoning. If the amount of alcohol is great enough, the body and the brain will 'shut down' and the person can die as a result."

"In some areas, part of the DUI school curriculum puts offenders face to face with victims, who tell their painful stories of how a drunk driver changed their lives forever. The idea is that personalizing the pain that drinking and driving can cause might make the offender stop and think before getting behind the wheel after drinking."
