Who Is Alexander Artemev?

Artemev became the first U.S. World pommel horse medalist since Kurt Thomas in 1979 when he finished third at the 2006 World Championships. He won the U.S. All-Around title at the Visa Championships, marking his full return to the sport after surgery in the summer of 2005. Artemev is the only child of Vladimir and Svetlana Artemev, who are both gymnastics coaches. His father, Vladimir, was a member of the Soviet National Team (1977-1987) and was the USSR national all-around champion in 1984. His mother, Svetlana, is a former rhythmic gymnast. Alexander, whose nickname is Sasha, moved to the United States in 1994 and earned his U.S. citizenship in December 2002. He tore elbow ligaments in August 2002 and resumed training in February 2003. Artemev's gymnastics goals include medaling in the all-around at a World Championship and at an Olympic Games. Artemev graduated from McLain High School in 2003. His future aspirations include attending college to study business and someday opening his own gym.

Sasha comes home with a Bronze medal for the team competition.

Alexander Vladimirovich "Sasha" Artemev (, ; born August 29, 1985) is an American artistic gymnast. He is the 2006 all-around U.S. National Champion, the 2007 and 2008 U.S. National Champion on the pommel horse and an individual bronze medalist at the 2006 World Championships. Artemev was a member of the bronze medal winning U.S. team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
