Lice: Everything About Them And How To Kill Them.

I hate lice. The idea of lice in my head or my kids' heads is disgusting and yet most kids get them at some point or another. Having lice is common among children. This doesn't mean that your kids are dirty or that you are a bad parent, it just means if you have a kid and your kid is around other kids one of them is bound to have lice and will unknowingly pass it on to the other kids, including yours. If you're new to the lice phenomenon you could even be carrying lice and not know it. Did you know there is more than one kind of lice?

Simple Facts About Lice

Types of Lice

Head lice. These lice develop on your scalp. They're easiest to see at the back of your neck and over and behind your ears. Head lice are common in preschool and elementary school-age children. Adults can also get lice, especially if the adults live with children.

Body lice. They live and lay eggs (nits) in the seams of clothing. These lice spend most of their time in the seams and folds of your clothing. The lice are on the body only when they feed.

Pubic lice. Commonly called crabs, these lice occur on the skin and hair of your pubic area and on eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, chest hair and sometimes even in the scalp.

What are head lice?

The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) is an obligate ectoparasite of humans. Head lice are wingless insects spending their entire life on human scalp and feeding exclusively on human blood. Humans and chimpanzees are the only known host of this specific parasite, but many other species of lice are known which infest most orders of mammals and also birds.

The head louse differs from the related body louse in preferring to attach eggs to scalp hair rather than to clothing. Although the two species are visually identical, they do not interbreed in the wild, although they will interbreed in laboratory conditions. From genetic studies of them, they are thought to have diverged as species about 107,000 years ago, when many humans began to wear a significant amount of clothing. A yet more distantly related species of hair-clinging louse, the pubic or crab louse (Pthirus pubis), also infests humans. It is visually different from the other two species, and is much closer in appearance to the lice which infest other primates. Lice infestation of any part of the body is known as pediculosis.

Head lice differ from other hematophagic ectoparasites such as the flea in that lice spend their entire life cycle on a host. Although this article is a delightful read, it is entirely devoid of references. At best, it is an unsourced secondary reference, and should probably be avoided for verification purposes. Head lice cannot fly, and their short stumpy legs render them incapable of jumping, or even walking efficiently on flat surfaces.
