I had 2 hamsters - both teddy bear and they both lived over 3 years. They were adorable, very gentle, extremely low-maintenance, and very loving. I took them out of the cage after I came home from work every day and played with them on the carpet. When the second one "Puffy" got old, he loved sleeping next to my Dad's ear when my Dad took naps during the day. It was the funniest thing ever!

My first hamster lived over 5 years! Not a joke!

Great Info on Hamsters. My kids had two hamsters from the same litter and they seemed to get along fine. I had no idea that they would fight if they were not from the same litter. :)

Hamsters look like cuddly pets but the only issue I have is how long they live. It's a shame if you grow an attachment because two or three years can come very quickly.
  • Edutopia Jan 15, 2012 @ 2:17 pm | delete
Hamsters are awesome pets. I'll never forget as a kid we got what the pet shop said was two male hamsters and two weeks later their cage was brimming with little hamster babies!

Appreciating your topic. It's rough on some kids when hamster dies after a few years ! Congrads on reaching Squidoo Level 55. Am going for 56. Will visit with you soon again. Thanks.

My hamster, Cookie, bites when we pick her up on the bottom levlr, it has a a thing on the top that opens p and he never bites s when we pick her up from there. Is there a reason r this?
Also, I would ToTALLY recommend rabbits or guinea pigs, I have had four Guinea pigs and they never big me, and my rabbit I have now doesn't bie, same for my other two, but, I thik hamsters are pretty good to :-)

    VERY useful lens!
  • Carennon Nov 30, 2011 @ 9:33 pm | delete
Yeah, adult hamsters don't go well together. I've seen quite a few hamster deaths because of it. However, I have noticed that dwarf hamsters don't usually fight to the death, so they're pretty good for people who want multiple hamsters. They also don't bite strangers as much. That's why, out of all the hamsters, the dwarves are my favorite (and not just because they're teeny).

Of course, I'd get a guinea pig over a non-dwarf hamster any day. Hamsters bite until they learn to like you; guinea pigs rarely ever bite - even with strangers.

great lens! hamsters are excellent pets. i bought a Syrian male and we named him Gary (girlfriend's a Take That fan...). He was a little shy to start with and came home squeaking/crying for hours but settled down. He loves to be held by anyone as long as they have clean hands!
  • lessardsgutters Sep 16, 2011 @ 8:17 pm | delete
Great Site ! Hamsters can be fun ... although in my experience not a great pet for children as they don't enjoy handling much. Although as one of the cheaper pets a great choice for them lol
  • Becksta Sep 22, 2011 @ 12:24 am | delete
Hamsters can be perfect for children, if the child takes the time to handle it and just interact with it in general.

There's only ever been 2 hamsters that I never managed to get to a point where I could handle them, and that was simply because they'd never had the interaction from a young age.

Once had 2 hamsters, however, one hamster decided to beat up the other one (true story) and the other one died. Not sure if both of them were males, but later, we decided to let the bully hamster go. Tsk tsk. Just sharing :)

My daughter always wanted a hamster, but we have kitties. And I just did not think it was fair to give the little hamsters heart attacks. Too bad they only live for about 3 years.
  • Murphypig Feb 11, 2011 @ 3:03 pm | delete
I always loved them. a hamster was my first pet. They are so much fun, but not really for kids. They are more for watching then cuddling. I wish parents would know that before buying one for their kids. good lens.

Great lens but 1 Bad Mistake. Dust baths should never be considered an alternative to water baths! Dust bathing is the only way to clean a hamster & one should NEVER, and I mean NEVER give their hamster a water bath! Water bathing can give a hamster the common cold, which harmless to humans, can lead to pneumonia & eventually death in hamsters. If your hamster does take a water bath, do not blow dry it because this can singe the hamster's lovely fur coat! Instead, just towel dry and hope for the best... Hope my contribution helped, NalexB
  • NAlexB Apr 27, 2009 @ 2:33 pm | delete
Having had hamsters for about 7 yrs now shows me that you did a great job of covering he needs! I actually have written a long care guide about hamsters, maybe I should publish it like you.. One of my hamsters escaped his cage 13 times, luckily everytime we found him! He was always twisting of tops, punching of tubes & what not, with an almost supernatural abilty. He was a very smart hamster. In addition to the name Espresso, we also dubbed him, ''The Great Hamster Houidini!''

Well laid-out information. I once owned one of these little guys--that I appropriately named "Bananas," by the way--but he actually lived many more than 2 or 3 years. Seriously, he just kept goin' and goin'. I don't recall Bananas' exact age when he went to his little shoebox in the sky (uh, ground), but I think it was about eight.
