All Hallow's Eve - Hallowe'en
Hallowe'en has its origins in the feast of Samhain, the old Celtic New Year.
Samhain represented the end and beginning of the natural cycle and it was also a time of plenty, the harvests having been gathered and the weaker animals slaughtered before the onset of Winter. The festivities could last for up to a week surrounding November 1st.

The occult associations may have arisen from the tradition that at this time of year, soothsayers would forecast the coming year and spirits, witches and pixies were thought to abound at this and other changes of the seasons.
The festival was not originally associated with the dead, that was an additional aspect to the date, the death and decay of Autumn being deemed appropriate surroundings in which to remember those gone on before.

Guising

In the dictionary definition, guising is associated with Hallowe'en, yet the practice of guising was not only widespread in Britain, it was not originally associated with Hallowe'en.

Home from Ghoul
There are recorded instances of guising as far back as the beginning of the 1800s at Christmas and New Year from the North of Scotland to the South of England. It is likely this practice grew out of the need-driven door-to-door begging which would have been, even then, a centuries old tradition. The poor of the parish, elderly widows etc, would seek to supplement their meagre Winter stores by begging some of the excess their more fortunate and prosperous neighbours would have gathered in.
Nowadays, the only guising which takes place tends to be at Hallowe'en and it has become intermingled with the superstitions and celebrations of the old pagan New Year - the beginning of Winter on November 1st.

Trick or Treat
Trick or treat is a modern adaptation of the old traditions which undoubtedly were not restricted to Britain but were carried on in one form or another throughout Europe.Largely practiced in the USA, the 'trick or treat' cry has now come back to us in the UK, effectively renaming 'guising' for a younger generation. I would not want to be a historian in a thousand years time trying to distinguish these traditions from one another.

Once, adults would have been very much involved in this door-to-door activity, now it is rare to see adults dressed for the part on the streets with their children ... so go on, don't just go round with the kids to make sure they're safe, get dressed up and join in the fun.

A Hallowe'en Verse

It's the Halloween night, trick or treat for the children
we knock on your door just for fun
in the hope you might give us an apple or sweets,
a cake or a big sticky bun.
You can laugh at the vampires and devils and witches
but mind that you don't get a fright
from the ghosties and ghoulies and long-legged beasties
and things that go bump in the night.
