Statues Form a Circle near Roundabout

As you walk The Circle known as St Armands in Sarasota, Florida, you sense a story.

In the 1920s, circus magnate John Ringling who set in motion much of what makes Sarasota an unusual community, began developing one of America's first shopping centers, St Armands Circle, and bought Italian statues to add a classical theme.

Shades of today, Ringling halted the project because of an economic slowdown now known as The Great Depression. Thirty years later, in the late 1950s, St Armands Circle reached fruition as the Italian statuary watched.

Over the years the statues deteriorated and the St Armands Residents Association came to the rescue with its Save Our Statues (SOS) project started in January 2007. The group raised $120,000 in cash plus $30,000 in in-kind donations, according to SOS Project Director Edward Pinto writing in the January 208 issue of St Armands Star to purchase 21 new full-size statues, restore Ringling-era statues and install lighting.

The City of Sarasota included the SOS project with updated construction then underway on The Circle. The cooperative effort allowed the installation of a circle of new hand-carved marble statues called Allegory of Sarasota, Its Seven Virtues in a terraced crosswalk on the median park at John Ringling Boulevard and St Armands Circle.

At the dedication ceremony held on February 2, 2008, representatives of Sarasota's cultural life spoke on behalf of the communities virtues.

Today the Allegory of Sarasota, Its Seven Virtues attracts the attention of visitors and a place in Sarasota history. Plus it makes a great place to pause for a quiet moment in the midst of shopping.

Allegory of Sarasota, Its Seven Virtues
John Ringling foresaw Sarasota as a "metropolitan city" distinguished by its cultural facilities. Having built Ca d'Zan (1925) and the John and Mabel [sic] Ringling Museum of Art (1927) on his 66-acre estate on Sarasota Bay, events were set in motion that would fulfill Ringling's vision. This complex, now affiliated with the Florida State University, also boasts theaters, a circus museum, and research facilities. Over time, the Sarasota Concert Band (successor to the Czecho-Slovakian National Band brought to Sarasota by Ringling in 1931), Ringling College of Art and Design (co-founded by Ringling in 1931), Florida West Coast Symphony (1949), Mote Marine Laboratory (1955), New College (1960), Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall (1968), Selby Gardens (1973), and others too numerous to mention were added, fulfilling Ringling's observation: "Though life is short, art is long."

Allegory of Sarasota, Its Seven Virtues copyright 2007, conceived and designed by Edward Pinto, was dedicated on February 2, 2008 to John Ringling and countless others who created the cultural jewel of Florida.

Hellenistic and Roman Ideal Sculpture: The Allure of the Classical

By Rachel Meredith Kousser

Author Rachel Kousser presents a new approach to Hellenistic and Roman ideal sculpture. She analyzes the Romans' preference for retrospective, classicizing statuary based on Greek models. Using a case study of a particular sculptural type, a forceful yet erotic image of Venus, Kousser argues that the Romans self-consciously employed such sculptures to represent their ties to the past in a rapidly evolving world.

The author's view of Hellenistic and Roman ideal sculpture as an example of a highly effective artistic tradition that was, by modern standards, extraordinarily conservative connects well with the approach of Sarasota's first major art collector, John Ringling.
