My Alternative Residential Energy Story
Ranked #110,723 in Healthy Living, #1,088,488 overall
How It All Started
Let me tell you a little about where it all started, I will try to keep this brief. I became interested in my own alternative energy source, when about 5 years ago we had an ice storm and the power was out for 7 days. So I started reading about alternative energy sources. It was very frustrating at first one website would say it was a bad idea and gave there formulas to prove it. Then others would say they did it and found it easy and very liberating. So figured the best place to start was by reducing my electrical needs.
Step One To Reduce My Power Consumption
Reduce Power for lighting By 75%
I replaced all my incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs, seemed like an easy enough thing to do. They use 75% less electricty and put out 75% less heat than a incandesant light bulb. So my bill for lighting was 75% less. Which really added up there are over 50 light bulbs in my house and some are on all the time. Step 2 Reduce Even More
Reduce Total Power Useage By 40%
Then I learned that 40% of the average electric bill was from devices that I thought were off. Things like TVs, DVD players, microwaves and the worse power thief DC converters. For those that don't know what those are, they are used for phone chargers and electronic games basically any over sized plug is a DC converter. I put these devices on power strips so when I turned off the power strip I knew they were not using power or I just unplugged them. Total Power use Cut By 65%
Every Time I needed a new electric device, I got the ones with a high energy star rating. The end result of all these small steps was that my electrical needs dropped by 65%. Now this changed the equations and formulas, and I saw that having my own alternative residential energy source just got 65% closer.
So I checked into the best way for me to start my own renewable energy source. I needed to know which one would fit my location best. What size it should be. I found no better place to get the answer to these questions than Earth4energy. They gave me easy to follow step by step instructions and full support. I haven't had an electric bill for a year and a half now and I still have all the modern conveniences just like every one else, ac, TV, computer and etc.... Now if I could just do something about the cable co. If now click here if not now when!
