Really impressed. Just learned I have otosclerosis. 45 mother of 2 in Australia. Struggling big time. Any advice??
  • aj2008 Mar 15, 2012 @ 5:17 am | delete
Rose, when I was diagnosed with Otosclerosis it came as a relief. I was having brain scans and because of the symptoms, one of the possibilities was a brain tumour. Ironically a friend of mine developed similar symptoms a few weeks later and it turns out that she DID have a brain tumour.

At first I was relieved and then I started to realise that my life would change. I had to give up my job, I had to stop playing tennis and horse riding. But then I started doing different things. I started to write online. So I guess I am saying it is easy to focus on what you can't do, but you will be surprised at what you CAN do.

Another problem is that Otosclerosis is an invisible condition. By that I mean if you broke your leg you would be in plaster and on crutches and because of that people (and hopefully your kids) would automatically offer help. But with an invisible condition the reminder that you are struggling is not there obvious for people to see. Do not suffer in silence - make it clear to those close to you what it is like for you and what help you need.

One example for us is that I no longer do the weekly food shopping. I was crashing the shopping cart into other people, it was too tiring and everytime they changed the store layout I found it very hard to cope. My husband does it now and if ever he gets grumpy about it (which is rare) then I just ignore it - I will not allow anyone to make me feel the slightest bit guilty that I can't do stuff.

If I were you, I would research Otosclerosis and learn as much about it as I can. Then I would quiz my medical team as to the extent of what damage has been done so far - I appear to have "plateaued". The condition has not worsened since diagnosis and, as my neuroligist told me, my brain appears to have compensated to a certain extent, because the dizzy spells I had at the beginning are not so bad and I am confident driving again, although I cant do very long distances and driving at night is tough, so I dont do it much.

    Good luck :)

It will take me quite a while to fill my bio page with interests. I've just begun, but I've so enjoyed spending time on yours. I will want to read your lenses on England.
  • Graceonline Nov 12, 2011 @ 3:21 am | delete
Well, I'm exhausted, and all I had to do was read about your life and interests. What a ride! Incidentally, you may be interested in RenaissanceWoman2010's lens on wild horses in her mountain meadow.

Hi, you've certainly covered some amazing topics here and juggling it all is a major achievemnt. Well done.
  • sousababy Oct 26, 2010 @ 6:59 pm | delete
    Dear AJ,
Wow, your life has been (and still is) so full...and you have chosen to "dance" more than "sit it out." I too am born in the Chinese year of the Horse (1966) but I am a Scorpio. I see that you have visited Niagara falls, that's pretty close to me. What a coincidence that you too love horses (and all animals). Another Squid lady greeted me and was the first one to comment on many of my lenses, she is known for her amazing portraits of horses. If you wish, check her out at: http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/d-artist

Oh and I think I accidentally made myself a "Fan" of yours twice, I do not have a twin. (And thanks for becoming my third fan).

    Take Good Care,
    Rose

It occurs to me that you are very likely the most resilient person I "know." Talk about bouncing back! I learn a little more about you and am more impressed each time I read one of your pages.

I love your Things I Hate list. The only thing there that's not on my list is British summers...only because I've never experienced them!

Well done, AJ! I recently came across the quote
somewhere else about dancing in the rain instead of
    waiting for the storms to
    pass! Another way of saying:
    Live In The Present Moment--Fully!!

    That's what we're here for!!

You're great! This is so tender and multi-faceted. BTW your video on Stardust has been removed - might want to look into that - also, I am now fascinated by this pantomime thing you mention, I live in the states and had not heard of it. I also am very pleased to have made acquaintance with "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass It's about learning to dance in the rain" and plan to meditate on that. It's raining here right now! Be well.

Yes, I think you understand me and my message -- so you see, I was having a not too stellar day -- a couple of them. Not really for something I did wrong, but stuff happens you know! Sometimes others can't help themselves -- they're human. So, what to do? Yes -- it is therapeutic to create a lens and vent -- and get it out -- to pick that appropriate message and hammer out a lens. Whew, I felt better and I know you can too! Nope -- I do NOT want to focus on the negative -- turn it around into a positive -- flip it! ;)

Only joined this fantastic place today and slowly building my lens. Your own is inspirational and makes for wonderful reading. I'd like to link to you from my lens if I may. We have so much in common. I am currently a single mother after having been in a 20 year relationship (we met when I was 16) and we parted company some 3 years ago. I decided to go to University where, after dabbling with a Degree in Drama have decided to change my path and starting a new Degree in Cambridge in Writing/Film Studies (Double Honours). As most mothers do, I'm juggling everything and managing well and finding life very exciting at the moment. Will peep in regularly. Thank you.

What a wonderful Bio! Very nice to get to know more about you :) We've a few things in common too; horses, books read, and being a 'dreamer'. Been re-arranging things in the house, and just displayed a gift from my brother many years ago....a scenic musical statue with 8 angels & other stuff, and it plays "Beautiful Dreamer".

"Holidaying in Greece"? Now is that something you do or something you would love to do. If you do, then I'm very jealous.

I so love Dr. Who but I stopped watching when Billie left. I decided my heart couldn't take it. Is that song by Queen?

Stardust is on my Zip List of movies to watch.

I enjoyed getting to know you a little bit.

I love this lens. You have some really great goals to achieve. I hope you are able to achieve them. I have been to Washington State before and want to go there again. There's a mountain named Mt.Rainer. It is a beautiful mountain. You'll love it.

I hate bullying too. I too have a bullying lens...it is just not ready to publish yet. When it is I will lensroll it to yours. I am a teacher and deal with bullying everyday. I am also on our school corporation's bullying task force and recently our 5-8 grades in our whole district implemented an anti bullying program.

I love your lens AJ! This is exactly the kind of biography I hope to make about me one day. First I need to get the next 10 lenses published that are all in different phases of drafts! 5* from a new fan.
