Amanda Lorenzo Speaks!

Amanda Lorenzo, author of the Runt Farm series, speaks out on writing books for children, her funny hats and the art of playing marbles.

Young people (and old ones, too) are always asking me, "Amanda Lorenzo, what gives you the ideas for your stories about runts?" And I always answer, "Why, Life itself! Birthday cakes, new toys, and bowls of cereal come and go, but Life is always there to be written about. Do I write about just any old life of Amanda Lorenzo? No, indeed, dears! I start with a character, say, a mouse. That mouse has a problem -- usually a pickle much like one of my own. And I just take it from there. So this lens is about Amanda Lorenzo, the books I write about Runt Farm, where to find those books, and a few other things that are so interesting in life that I Absolutely Must write about them. Also here you will find the never-before-revealed, amazing truth about how I got to be me.

Most common question asked of Amanda Lorenzo, children's author

(Of course, I gladly answer.)

Questioner: How do you get the ideas for your Runt Farm stories?

Amanda Lorenzo: Some ideas come from things that happened to me as a kid.

Questioner: Like what?

Amanda Lorenzo, author of the Runt Farm series gives a candid reply:
Well in Beatrice and Blossom, Beatrice cheats Blossom out of all his marbles using phony rules like "rainbows" and "double rainbows." Then Beatrice uses a steel ball bearing as a shooter (which is not at all fair). When I was six or seven years old, the Canaday brothers, who lived down the block from me, got all my marbles just like that -- by using phony rules and a steelie.

Questioner: Did you get them back?

Amanda Lorenzo: I think so. I went crying to Mr. & Mrs. Canaday and they got it all straightened out. Of course then I got called a crybaby. I've never liked being called a crybaby. But what can you do? I was the victim of an all-out, large-scale marble theft. And that sort of thing takes its toll, you know.

What a Fine Bag of Marbles . . . Play fair!

Like Beatrice and Blossom of the Runt Farm series, children and grownups love playing marbles. And each marble is a beautiful thing to look at, too. Every single one is unique, just like children and grownups and birds and animals and insects -- and rocks and trees and plants. No two alike. Isn't that wonderful?

You don't have to wear a special hat to play marbles, but you could if you wanted to.

These are Amanda Lorenzo-recommended Florentine marbles. They're all swirlies. It can take a while just to get a good look at all of these, much less play with 'em. But that's the risk you take. Marbles appeal to those who enjoy slowing down to admire the artistry of swirly colors -- and roundness. Who doesn't love a good marble, I ask you?

Amanda Lorenzo Explains Her Derby Hat

(My hat is always in question.)

Questioner: Why do you always wear a funny hat?

Amanda Lorenzo, author of the Runt Farm series says:
Funny? You think my hat is funny? Then why aren't you laughing? Ha-ha, just kidding. . . Actually this bowler hat -- the one I wear most often -- was my Dad's hat. I wear it to remember him, and it works! Some people call it a derby. But I think just about any kind of hat makes life more fun! And my friends and fans of the Runt Farm series think so, too. Keep scrolling and reading, and you'll see a photo of some of them trying on hats.

Turn upside down and it's a bowl for sorting your marbles!

In Book 2 of the Runt Farm series, a squirrel named Blossom wears a bowler hat just like Amanda Lorenzo's. Then he gets in a huff and . . . well, that's another story. Wear this derby in good health, my friend! In fact, if you take a picture of yourself wearing this derby hat, you could send it to me by going to http://runtfarm.com and posting it to the Barn Wall! I'll bet you'd look spiffy in a black derby hat

I like my hats a bit on the large side, because a hat should feel comfortable. This one fits the bill. Of course, a bowler hat isn't the only way to get decked out. My friends love all KINDS of hats!

Amanda Lorenzo on how a book is made

It takes teamwork!

Questioner: How long does it take you to write a book?

Amanda Lorenzo, author of the Runt Farm reveals the secrets of publishing an illustrated book:
The writing goes quickly: a few weeks, maybe. But getting from that first set of stories to a real book you can sit down and read with your friends -- well, that takes much longer. More like two years!

Questioner: Why does it take so long?

Amanda Lorenzo: Well, it takes teamwork -- people wearing many hats. After I write a story, my editor takes a look at it. She suggests that I make some changes, then we argue awhile, and then I do what she says (Sometimes I wonder if her hat is on too tight). Next the illustrator does a bunch of tiny little drawings called thumbnails and we "ooh" and "aah" over them. That leads to more and bigger artwork. Then the book designer takes it all and mashes it together and there's more "ooh"-ing and "aah"-ing. The proofreader marks up everything with oodles of red ink, then all the mistakes get fixed, and then the book printer takes it from there and makes the books. When I put on my teaching hat and visit classrooms, sometimes I bring examples of a book in all those stages. And I bring hats, of course. The students just love trying on the Editor, Illustrator, Designer, Proofreader and Printer hats!

How writing cheeky chapter books changed my life

Frankly, I didn't think becoming a children's author would change my life. Not that much, anyway. Children's authors are everywhere, just like children's books. I thought nothing of it, really. But then something Extremely Exciting happened. The first book in the Runt Farm series arrived at my door. And what do you know -- my name was on the cover, right in the center of the top sunflower! (The name of our fine illustrator, Mark Evan Walker, is in the other sunflower). Well, it absolutely changed my life, I tell you. I went right out and bought a dandy new hat to celebrate the occasion. I wore that hat to my first TV interview, too. It's the same hat I'm wearing with Polly, the chicken, in the photo at the top of this page. So make no mistake: if you become a children's author, you're bound to feel different than you did before. At the very least you may find yourself sitting beneath a fresh piece of headwear.

Make Your Own Book

Let's be authors together!

You can do it, and your kids can, too. Some of my youngest friends are authors and illustrators -- I love reading their books! When I put on my teaching hat, my most popular school visit program is about How an Illustrated Book is Made. Many teachers are already doing a "make a book" unit with their students. With these kits, children can immortalize their stories and pictures, and build self-esteem. And if they wear hats while they're doing all that, well, I'm definitely in favor of it.

Amanda Lorenzo's Funny Glasses Selection

You won't see farther, but you'll look far more interesting!

Just as the right hat lends an air of intrigue to one's appearance, so does the right pair of spectacles. My favorites have little rhinestones in the pointy corners, but you may look best in a pair of pink flamingo glasses. Some might call these funny glasses, but someone else might think they're just beautiful, period. Everyone is different, you see. And it's a very fine thing to express ourselves truly, don't you agree? Here's a selection of funny glasses which you may or may not believe to be funny glasses at all. See for yourself!
