Lawyers

What is a lawyer? According to Black's Law Dictionary it's "A person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person licensed to practice law." What does this mean? How are you supposed to know if your lawyer is a good one? Will they be able to represent you? How adept are they at "practicing law"?

Traits of a good Lawyer

Experience

Broad Experience means that your lawyer has handled a lot of different cases. It doesn't mean that they've handled over 10,000 DUI cases. If you want a lawyer who can defend you then make sure you find one that has lots of experience in lots of areas.

Integrity

This is indispensable in a lawyer. Did you know that you can actually find out about this beforehand? Each lawyer has an online page with the State Bar of California. If they have done something like breaching a client's trust and malpractice it will be there.

Ability

The ability to competently prepare your case is an obvious need. A good way to determine the academic ability of your lawyer is to see when they passed the Bar Exam. The main reason that someone flunks out of the Bar Exam is that they had not prepared for it. You definitely wants a lawyer who will prepare your case beforehand and be able to argue it in your behalf.
