The Famous American Banjo Museum

Ranked #178,218 in Travel & Places, #3,580,694 overall

American Banjo Museum founded by Brady Hunt and Jack Canine is located in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The American Banjo Museum is soon to move to the Bricktown entertainment district in downtown Oklahoma City and is now located in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The Banjo is a four string instrument that evolved in over 350 years in America.

The Banjo is a representative of the American jazz era of 1920s and 30s, and the Museum has been constructed to promote greater appreciation of this era. The Museum initially began with a collection of 60-four string tenor and plectrum banjos, each of which is flamboyantly decorated and designed. The Museum recently acquired 200 banjos made in America (belonging to the jazz era), from a private collection in Germany.

The Museum is one of its kinds and holds the distinction of largest banjo collection in the world. The dramatic increase in the collection of banjos led to the shifting of the Museum from Guthrie to Bricktown in downtown Oklahoma City.

The new facility is thought to be quite impressive, featuring more than just the display of banjos. In fact, plans have been laid for a performance theater with 60 seats, a multimedia exhibit of the history of banjo, a vintage Shakey's Pizza replica, gift shops as well as other additions including classrooms, offices, workshops and snack bar.

The Museum is supposed to relocate to Bricktown somewhere in the middle of 2009. Once this happens, the residents as well as visitors will have another destination to go to. It is another precious addition to the already rich menu of attractions that the Oklahoma City offers. Hotels in Oklahoma City always include American banjo Museum in their tourist itinery, when arranging tours for their prestigious guests.

The famous American Banjo Museum is certainly well worth a visit!
