Pitbull Terriers Can Be Loving Family Pets
Give an APBT Training, Love and Affection...
Having raised two small children with two of my previous pitbull dogs, yes two pure bred UKC registered American Pit Bull puppies, I know first hand that pit-bull dogs can make excellent pets. How did I do it? First, I took the responsibility very seriously, I educated myself about the breed. At the time, back in early 80s, the Internet was not available and the town we lived in did not have many books on the breed. However, I managed to find two books that gave me great insight, and coupled with common sense I learned enough to raise my pit bulls.
Growing up in the city, there were several irresponsible pit bull owners. They only wanted to have a dog that made them look tough...another story...however I fell in love with the breed as a kid.
Knowing first hand what a bad owner could make a dog do, I wanted to be sure that raising pit bull terrier puppies with my children would be a positive and safe experience. Let me tell you this, I've raised and owned several pit bulls over the years, which were all bought as pit puppies from reputable breeders, and they were all raised as family pets. I am convinced that American pitbull terriers are NOT bad dogs.
You have many owners and breeders who do give this adorable, loving and loyal dog breed a bad name. It is sad to see pitbulls get banned or put to sleep because of uncaring individuals. Show animals love, guidance and affection. Stop animal abuse!
The first APBT Books I owned...
The first book I bought and read was, World of the American Pit Bull Terrier
And the second book I read on pitbulls was, This Is the American Pit Bull Terrier

My First Two Pitbulls
UKC Registered From the Same Liter

They are both gone now, they were born in 1983, and they became part of the family at five weeks old. On the left is "Blood" (as in family) he was the male, and the runt of the liter. He was all black with a white diamond on his lower chest, initially he was a very shy pup; all it took was a lot of love and he opened up and became a playful happy boy.
On the right is "Star" his sister, a brindle female. She was outgoing from day one, eager to please and always wanting attention.
Training two pit bulls at once was a lot of work, but so rewarding. And the bond between me and the dogs, the dogs and the kids, was one that could never be broken. Here they are running around a track at the National Guards in NW New Jersey, surrounded by wide open fields where they enjoyed plenty of exercise and playtime.
The key to my success, I was consistent with their training. For example, training them to sit and stay required patience. However, once they understood the command and respected my authority I could tell them to sit and stay then walk away and they remained where they were until I gave the command to come. At first I used a long leash to control them if they did decide to run off and play. I never yelled at them if they didn't listen, simply led them back to where I wanted them to sit, gave the command again and slowly walked away; eventually you have to turn your back on them to make sure they obey even when you are not looking.
It amazed me the day that I finally could call one or the other or both of them with a single word. American pit bull terriers are eager to please, but like any puppy that has a short attention span it's up to you to be a consistent leader in order for them to understand what it is you would like them to do or not do.
The intelligence, and eagerness of Pit Bulls to please is amazing. When we got these two dogs my youngest was just a year and a half and my oldest was five. So, there was a need to teach the kids how to love and respect the puppies too. The relationship between my kids and the dogs was so loving because the kids were active in the training; they learned how to treat the dogs and give proper commands too.

Homeme is loving life
She is still a little shy. She loves to play ball, swim, sleep and eat. Funny, when I first got her she wouldn't eat anything I had to spoon feed her!Homeme is housebroken, although her first time out for a walk on the leash she would stop and lay down. She had become so comfortable at home she didn't want to leave. But she is very smart and that made training her easy.
Pitbulls are eager to please and love positive reinforcement. When Homeme was about five months old she started the chewing habit, but quickly stopped. Repitition again, key to an obedient dog no matter what the breed.
How did I get her to stop so fast? Well, she would gnaw at anything wooden. When I found little chips in things like the bookshelf corner, I would take her to it, tell her no repeatedly, my tone was low yet firm. Then I'd take her to a toy, give it to her, and praise the heck out of her. Again, I'd take her back to the forbidden chewed area, and repeat the process, always ending with the toy. Within a few weeks she had completely stopped chewing or gnawing anything other than her toys.
Patient, it takes lots of repetition, persistence and patience to train any any puppy.

Bling for Pit Bulls Spiked Collars & Harnesses
Pitbull Accessories
Whenever I want to take a nice relaxing walk, a collar and short leash is my preference. All my pitbull dogs were trained to heel, so when using the collar they walked at my side and were very relaxed; training a dog to heel is easy they actually learn to follow your lead foot. Anyway, they all knew that when the harness came out they were allowed to pull as much as their hearts desired. However, I never allowed any of my dogs to pull in zig zag paths because they are very strong and I was on the other end of the leash.
Spiked collars and studded collars look stylish, they should not be used for any other purpose. For me it was like their dress-up attire.
