The Struggle for Water

"We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, or any other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation and basic health care."
-Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General

First, The Problem

Water is a daily struggle for millions of people

Worldwide, 5,000 people die of diarrheal infections everyday (mostly due to water- borne disease). That's almost 2 Million people every year.

Why?

2 in every 10 people on earth lack access to safe water.

And, 4 in every 10 people lack access to even basic sanitation service - like a latrine.

Some more facts:

Of the 2 million deaths which result from diarrheal infection each year, 90% are children under 5.

On average, poor people in Africa spend one-third of their incomes on the treatment of water-related diseases like malaria and diarrhea.

Over 2 billion people living in poverty in the developing world are at high-risk of infection by water-borne disease.

So, what needs to happen?
