Amherst was named in honor of Lord General Jeffrey Amherst who led British and North American forces during the French and Indian War. The town was first settled in 1773 has remained a small rural community located in the heart of the Souhegan Valley.

Clark-Wilkins Elemenatary is exclusive to the town of Amherst and area students, along with those from neighboring Mont Vernon, attend the award-winning Souhegan High School and Middle School. Souhegan High operates under the Coalition of Essential Schools curriculum, a novel approach to education that emphasizes student independence.
