Hydraujoint(TM) Ltd Releases Amputee Exercise Machines

In 1985 I was in a car crash in which I was the guy on the motorbike, as a result I lost my right leg 7 inches below the knee.

Complications developed within 12 months. Growth of bone spurs, had occurred, causing significant pain and eventually needing surgery. On closer exploration a large cyst was discovered and removed.

The following year, still unable to walk the bone spurs were removed. I spent almost 6 years in some state of incapacity and most of it on crutches.

I went this whole time without any fixed rehabilitation or Exercise programme implemented. (This sort of thing doesn't happen as much these days)

This meant when I came to walk with my new prosthesis, my residual limb was so weak that i was suffering from muscle fatigue and would regularly trip and fumble.(I really needed some sort of muscle building exercise)

The best I was offered was a piece of elastic band off a large roll. The problem with this was my now short stump would not allow for this giant rubber band to be attached to me in an effective way.

Finding there was no Amputee Exercise Equipment available to me but wanting to get fit, I started designing my own Amputee Exercise Machines.

After a lot of research, the conducting of Literature Reviews, the design of several Amputee Specific Exercise Machines and clinical trials.
"Hydraujoint(TM) Ltd" was founded.

Now available at http://www.hydraujoint.com the first range of exercise equipment specifically designed for amputees has been released.

My goal is to make amputee specific rehabilitation equipment available to all amputees and to educate amputees in the importance of exercise post amputation.

Please assist with this cause.

Amputee Exercise and Rehabilitation Equipment

Limbar(TM) Amputee Exercise and Rehabilitation Equipment

I have added this information to this site in order that people will become aware of some of the side effects amputees face with out Exercise being carried out effectively as part of their Rehabilitation. (you know the ones the public don't see because we are at home behind a closed door unable to go and tell anyone)

All amputees need Exercise in order to stay fit, Amputees have been proven to require more energy to walk the same distance as an able bodied person.

When I asked Prof. Alan Walmsley PhD IFNHH, Massey University, Wellington in 2002 if he would conduct a Literature Review to look into the side effects of amputation and to consider what sort of devices would be required for amputees to exercise effectively, Exercise for Amputees was unheard of.

It was only a short time earlier I was told by my physician that Exercise for Amputees was unnecessary "once you had a limb you can walk, what more do you need?" he had said.

We have come a long way since then, now all kinds of exercise cards and diagrams have been produced for Amputee Exercises offering a range of different exercise programs in order to condition the stump in order to walk.
These have been distributed all over the world in order to advise the need of some sort of exercise. But still no specific exercise machine has been available.

Everyone has seen amputees achieve great things, and we all can. Sometimes we just need a little assistance, or the right knowledge to empower ourselves to reach our goals.

I hope this Blog becomes a useful and informative tool for both amputees and physiotherapists whom without many of us would have never walked.

I would also like to say a big thank you to the many prosthetic makers who in some cases have devoted their entire working career towards helping amputees and have pushed the development of new and better prosthetics to the amazing products that we see on television today.

I ask now that people in the industry support the development and distribution of Amputee Specific Rehabilitation and Exercise Machines in order to shorten recovery times and to assist Amputees sustain a regular weight, improve blood pressure and increase mobility.
