Anesthesia and Cerebral Palsy
The loss of feeling to pain or discomfort can occur when receiving anesthesia. Normally, doctors will give patients anesthesia while performing medical procedures to relieve their pain. Anesthesia does some good for patients but sometimes it does more harm than good.
Anesthesia comes in many types that are used for malpractice procedures. What kinds of anesthesia they will administer depends on the patient and the procedure. Known anesthesia including:
- Local anesthesia
- Regional anesthesia
- Epidural and spinal anesthesia
- General anesthesia
A type of anesthesia given for childbirth is the epidural. Doctor's administer it next to the spinal cord in the nerves attached to it. The epidural anesthesia prevents the whole body, around the abdomen, hips and legs especially from feeling pain.

How Can Anesthesia Cause Cerebral Palsy?
It is known that in some cases anesthesia and cerebral palsy are connected. Doctors and researchers do not know how it anesthesia causes cerebral pasly exactly happens. What they do know is the epidural could slow down the unborn baby's heart rate; this could cause distress to the baby. It is thought that this happens when the mother's blood pressure drops so low that it does not flow to the uterus for the baby to receive oxygen.
Again, it is hard for the blood to flow properly through the patient's lower body when the epidural anesthesia is given changes happen to the body and the heart is not able to respond correctly. Not administering the anesthesia properly could have consequences or not watching the mother through out the labor can damage the unborn baby. The baby could be affected with cerebral palsy.
It is common that the baby's heart rate slows down at times during labor and the baby is not affected. Difficult labor or compromised fetal position can be the cause of the baby being harmed.

Cerebral Palsy Resulting from Anesthesia
Cerebral palsy of an infant can be developed by the use of anesthesia. Cerebral palsy affects the muscles, the brain, and the motor functions of a child. The degree of the condition ranges from mildly severe to severe. Cerebral palsy is incurable and life changing. There are treatments provided to children to help make their lives easier.
