Animal Totems: An Art Series

From earliest days man has sought to make sense of the world around him. From this various religions and beliefs systems were created. Animals were used by many native peoples around the world in an attempt to understand himself and his interconnectedness with the universe.

The word totem is derived from the Algonquian word nto'tem meaning "my kin" though it is a universal concept for many cultures.

About The Art
I am currently working on a series of paintings I call my Totem Series. This lens was created to showcase this collection of expressionistic paintings of various North American totemic animals. Each will be accompanied by a brief description of what that animal symbolizes as well as an excerpt regarding it's Animal Medicine from the Animal Medicine book that accompanies the card deck.

As more paintings are created in this series, this lens will be continually updated. I envision minimally 12 to 15 paintings but may do as many as 35.

Medicine Cards

The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals

Scattered throughout this lens are short excerpts from the book for the card set, describing the animal medicine for each creature. If you would like to read more and are interested in learning and exploring your animal totems and spirit guides, this is an excellent tool.

I'm not one much in the way of using decks for divining purposes. But I do however reference the book when I see a not typical animal. For instance if a red fox dashes in front of me or I see a badger being harassed by a bird (both actual events) on one of my walks I may pull out the book to see what it has to say. It's sort of a new way of looking at the natural world and my place within it.

Buffalo Totem

Wild & Wooly - Red Buffalo (Animal Totem Series #1)

Wild & Wooly - Red Buffalo: Original oil pastel by Mona Majorowicz

The Native Americans hold the buffalo sacred and he is revered and honored as a powerful symbol of the Creator's blessings of abundance. When threatened Buffalo form a circle facing out to protect the calves. Also they face into storms and blizzards. This teaches us to face adversity with dignity and courage. Buffalo is strong and dangerous when provoked. From this we can learn to temper our power when dealing with others or difficult situations.

Buffalo Medicine
Abundance

Buffalo was the major source of sustenance for the Plains Indians. It gave meat for food, hides for clothing, warm and soft buffalo robes for the long winters, and hooves for glue. The medicine of Buffalo is prayer, gratitude and praise for that which has been received. Buffalo medicine is also knowing that abundance is present when all relations are honored as sacred.

Buffalo medicine is a sign that you achieve nothing without the aid of the great spirit and that you must be humble enough to ask for that assistance and then be grateful for what you receive.

Raven Totem

The artwork for Raven is not yet done, but it's on the short list and should be added soon.

Ravens are often referred to as the "Secret Keepers" by several native tribes because of their habit of sitting silently in nearby trees as if listening and then flying away shrieking eerily. Because of their dark iridescent color they are associated with the place where fear and secrets are kept. Raven is the teacher of mysticism and transformation. He brings a greater understanding of our consciousness so that we may see into the hearts of others and experience their feelings.

Raven Medicine
Magic

Raven magic is a powerful medicine that can give you the courage to enter the darkness of the void, which is the home of all that is not inform. The void is called the Great Mystery. Great Mystery existed before all other things came into being. Great Spirit lives in the void and emerged from the Great Mystery. Raven is the messenger of the void.

Wolf Totem

White Wolf: Original oil pastel by Mona MajororwiczWolf is the teacher and pathfinder. From this you will learn to teach others about sacredness and spirituality. Wolf also teaches you how to find balance and confidence within your pack of family and friends and ones self. Wolf brings teachings which develops insight and value the "inner voice" when making decisions and keeps us from inappropriate action.

Wolf Medicine
Teacher

Wolf is the pathfinder, the forerunner of new ideas who returns to his clan to teach and share medicine. Wolf takes one mate for life and is loyal like Dog. If you were to keep company with Wolves, you would find an enormous sense of family within the pack, as well as a strong individualistic urge. These qualities make Wolf very much like the human race. As humans we also have the ability to be a part of society and yet still embody our individual dreams and ideas.

The senses of Wolf are very Keen, and the moon is its power ally. The moon is a symbol of psychic energy, ot the unconscious that holds the secrets of knowledge and wisdom. Baying at the moon may be an indication of Wolf's desire to connect with new ideas which are just below the surface of consciousness. Wold medicine empowers the teacher within us all to come forth and aid the children of the Earth in understanding the Great Mystery of life.

Ram Totem

Original Ram painting by Mona Majorowicz

Moose

The artwork for Moose is not yet done, but it's on the short list and will be added soon.

Moose is a symbol of courage and determination. Moose shows us how to walk proudly and with grace. Though Moose looks ungainly they are graceful and powerful and their presence is awe inspiring. Despite its great size, moose can camouflage itself very well. From this we learn to not allow our powerful presence to become overbearing to others. Moose is intuitive and teaches us to shield ourselves from adversity with truth and spiritual understanding and to value ourselves and our inherent wisdom.

Moose Medicine
Self-Esteem

Moose medicine people have the ability to know when to use the gentleness of Deer and when to activate the stampede of Buffalo. They understand the balance between giving orders to get things done and having a willingness to do things themselves. The wisdom of Moose medicine is akin to the Grandfather Warrior who has long since put away his war paint and is now advising the young bucks to cool their blood.

. . . Their joy lies in being the teachers of the children, and in being the first ones to give encouragement. That is not to say that Moose medicine people do not use their wisdom to warn as well as give praise, because they do. Moose medicine people know what to say, when to say it, and to whom.

Bear Totem

Griz - Yellow Bear (Animal Totem Series #2)

Griz - Yellow Bear (Animal Totem Series #2) Original Oil Pastel by Mona Majororwicz

Bear symbolizes divinity in many cultures. Their hibernation cycles teaches us that we need spaces of rest, rejuvenation and reflection. He understands this follows the changing seasons from resting and reflection in Winter, to the growth and rebirth of Spring. He reminds us to accept the natural ebb and flow of life. There is a time for playfulness and a time to be assertive. Bear as a warrior is powerfully impressive and the embodiment of strength. He is an independent thinker, without peer and is unchallenged.

Bear Medicine
Introspection
The strength of Bear Medicine is the power of introspection. It lies in the west on the great medicine wheel of life. Bear seeks honey, or the sweetness of truth . . . In the winter, when the Ice Queen reigns and the face of death is upon the Earth, Bear enters the womb-cave to hibernate, to digest the year's experience. It is said that our goals reside in the West also. To accomplish the goals and dreams that we carry, the art of introspection is necessary.

Cougar Totem

Puma - Yellow Cat (Animal Totem Series #3)

Cougar Totem #3: Original oil pastel by Mona MajorowiczCougar is known by many names. Puma, Panther, Mountain Lion, Catamount are just a few. He teaches us the value of observation and scrutiny as well as silence and patience. Cougars intense focus shows us how we are to observe our lives. The people of Cougar typically have a deeper spiritual knowledge. They are quite intuitive and are likely to be artistic.Patience and observation are required since Cougar has a tendency to act in haste or lash out.

Mountain Lion Medicine
Leadership

Mountain Lion medicine involves lessons on the use of power in leadership. It is the ability to lead without insisting that others follow. It is the understanding that all beings are potential leaders in their own ways. The use and abuse of power in a position of influence are part of this great cats medicine.

By observing the graceful pounce of Mountain Lion you will learn how to balance power, intention, physical strength and grace. This relates in human terms to the balance of body, mind and spirit. The giant feline never wastes anything. It only kills what it needs for survival.

White Buffalo

White Buffalo Totem Series #4

White buffalo: Original oil pastel by Mona Majorowicz

The white buffalo is seen as a highly sacred symbol to many of the American Indian Nations. It is seen as a symbol of hope and renewal for humanity and for harmony between all peoples.A white buffalo calf (named Miracle) was born in Wisconsin in August of 1994. Since she was not an albino, she was considered to be the first white buffalo calf born since 1933.

White Buffalo Medicine

Prayer

All animals are sacred, but in many traditions the White Buffalo is the most sacred. The appearance of White Buffalo is a sign that prayers are being heard, that the sacred pipe is being honored, and that the promises of prophesy are being fulfilled. White buffalo signals a time of abundance and plenty.

(excerpt from the Medicine Cards book.)

The Legend of the White Buffalo
One summer a long time ago, the seven sacred council fires of the Lakota Sioux came together and camped. The sun was strong and the people were starving for there was no game.

Two young men went out to hunt. Along the way, the two men met a beautiful young woman dressed in white who floated as she walked. One man had bad desires for the woman and tried to touch her, but was consumed by a cloud and turned into a pile of bones.

The woman spoke to the second young man and said, "Return to your people and tell them I am coming." This holy woman brought a wrapped bundle to the people. She unwrapped the bundle giving to the people a sacred pipe and teaching them how to use it to pray. "With this holy pipe, you will walk like a living prayer," she said. The holy woman told the Sioux about the value of the buffalo, the women and the children. "You are from Mother Earth," she told the women, "What you are doing is as great as the warriors do."

Before she left, she told the people she would return. As she walked away, she rolled over four times, turning into a white female buffalo calf. It is said after that day the Lakota honored their pipe, and buffalo were plentiful. (from John Lame Deer's telling in 1967).

Many believe that the buffalo calf, Miracle, born August 20, 1994 symbolizes the coming together of humanity into a oneness of heart, mind, and spirit.

Horse

The artwork for Horse is not yet done, but it's on the short list and will be added soon.

Horse represents a wild unbreakable spirit and freedom as well as the strength and power to take his rider to new spiritual territory. He brings the earth power of groundedness as well as wisdom whispered on the spirit winds. He is honored as the helper and messenger of Spirit knowledge. Horse teaches us to tame our wild nature and through gentle continual training we may be able to avoid personal and professional conflicts in order to forge a new path of understanding and awareness.

Horse Medicine

Power

Horse is physical power and unearthly power. In shamanic practices throughout the world, Horse enables shamans to fly through the air and reach heaven.

Humanity made a great leap forward when Horse was domesticated, a discovery akin to that of fire. Before Horse, humans were earthbound, heavy-laden, and slow creatures indeed. Once humans climbed on Horse's back, they were as free and fleet as the wind. The could carry burdens for great distances with ease. Through their special relationship with Horse, humans altered their self-concept beyond measure. Horse was the first animal medicine of civilization. Humanity owes incalculable debt to Horse and to the new medicin it brought.

Bull Totem

The Bull totem symbolizes fertility, virility, strong will, insight into the past and charging into thing unprepared. Bull has a surging energy which unchecked can manifest itself as uncontrollable anger or passion. Bull teaches us to be assertive without becoming "bull headed" and warns against bullying others with it's strength. Out of control Bull energy literally manifests itself as uncontrollable anger or passion.

Dream Animals

Much of the information provided in this lens was based on Native American beliefs. This book however, Dream Animals discusses animal as symbols from a completely different perspective. More psychological. The artwork is fabulous and was an enjoyable unique take on how we view the animals in our lives.
