There's a reason that pounds and shelters demand that the animals they adopt out be fixed: it's the most humane thing to do. It keeps pounds and shelters from having to house (and put down) more homeless animals than they currently do. If you find a stray that you want to adopt after exhausting all means to locate the dog's or cat's person, and that animal has not been fixed, then GET IT FIXED. Unfixed pets are the biggest reason there is overcrowding in pounds and shelters and the biggest reason millions of domestic animals are destroyed each year. Having pets spayed or neutered is the the single most humane thing you can do to decrease the premature death toll for domestic pets in the future. Fixing pets also cuts down on agressive pet behavior in your neighborhood and at dog parks, which cuts down on injuries and death to other pets AND humans and related medical costs. I currently have a feral cat colony/situtation at the property I live on. In a nutshell: neighbors don't fix their pet cats, the cats procreate at an alarming rate, the next thing you know there are kittens and cats EVERYWHERE. I'm feeding more than a dozen cats now only because I don't have the heart to not feed them. For whatever reason, these cats wound up on my property (before I began feeding them) and wouldn't leave. Slowly, one by one, I'm taking the ones that will let me touch them into free spay clinics to help stop the growth of the colony. Another one of my neighbors has a similar situation. These cats totally depend on humans and many of them die of starvation. They inbreed, too, which results in problems and diseases that cause sickness and death. All this because a couple people in the neighborhood keeps cats and won't take the time to get them spayed. I have one dog and one cat, both of which are fixed. My cat, who used to be an indoor/outdoor cat will not step foot outside now because there are so many cats outside on what used to be her turf. Suffice to say that there are millions of stories and end results that can serve to help people take seriously the importance of spaying or neutering pets. Ignorance is one of the big reasons pets aren't fixed. If public education administrators made this subject required learning -- a one-time, half-hour seminar in Jr. High or High School? -- it could do a lot of good. 15 minutes could be devoted to the importance of fixing pets and the other 15 minutes could deal with cruelty to animals and the fact that it's wrong, illegal and is a jailable offense -- this might make it easier in the long run to enforce animal cruelty laws, as ignorance would become less of an excuse.
