What makes How David Met Sarah different?
How David Met Sarah is the heartwarming story of a young man with Down Syndrome who falls in love with a young woman with autism.
It's based on the life of my own brother, who has Down Syndrome and is 36 years old. What makes How David Met Sarah different from any of my previously published work and from most other novels, is that I wrote it so that both the content and the text are accessible to adults with lower level reading skills like my brother.
What also makes How David Met Sarah different is that I initially wrote it with no thought of sharing it with anyone other than my brother.
I wrote the story out of a wish to give my brother something I have always enjoyed all my life since I was old enough to hold a book - a good story, well told. I also wanted to give my brother a hero with whom he could identify - someone who saw the world through a lens much the same as his. My brother loved How David Met Sarah so much that I was encouraged to share it with others - the members of my writing critique group.
They were so enthusiastic I was encouraged to bring this story to the public. It's available now both online and through your Barnes & Noble bookstore. 20% of all proceeds are being donated to the National Down Syndrome Society.

The second book in the series is scheduled for publication on March 31.
I'm thrilled to report that the first draft of When David was Surprised is now in the hands of its loving editor. I can't wait to get her feedback. I'm also hoping to see a sketch of the new cover very soon too! I'll be posting it here as soon as I can!
Why How David Met Sarah is important....
Judi Ferrara is the mother of a developmentally delayed son and an advocate for the rights of the disable. Last year, Judi helped get a bill passed in PA making it harder for those who abuse the disabled to continue to be hired to work with them.
As a parent of a special needs child I am always in search of ways to help others understand the world in which we live. Toys and books that most parents take for granted are not always available to us. When an author like Anne Kelleher takes on the subject in her book "How David met Sarah" it opens up a literary world virtually unknown to families like mine. Books that delve into the subject of relationships are even more rare. Books that can be read and enjoyed are true gifts.
Being able to read with your children is a wonderful way to show them another world out there. A real world full of real people and some of them have special needs but they have the same needs as we all do. They want to be loved and accepted in community. With knowledge comes understanding. As a parent I have had 27 years of sharing what my son Michael is like to those who meet his daily needs. Having books available that show feelings and portray real life experiences of our children are great resources for all readers.
