biography

The image
Annette Hanshaw was one of the
first great female jazz singers.

In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters. Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s.

Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper.

Hanshaw made her one and only appearance on film in the 1933 Paramount short Captain Henry's Radio Show, "a picturization" of the popular Thursday evening radio program Maxwell House Show Boat, in which she starred from 1932 to 1934.

Having grown tired of show business, in the late 1930s Hanshaw retired and settled into married life with her husband, Pathé Records executive Herman "Wally" Rose. Later in life, in a would-be comeback, she recorded two demo records, but they were never released.

Birthdate

For many years it was believed that Annette had been born in 1910 and began her recording career shortly before her 16th birthday. However, it has recently come to light that she was in fact born nine years earlier, making her 24 at the time of her first commercial recording in September 1926. Her nephew, Frank W. Hanshaw III, has confirmed 1901 as the date on her birth certificate.

Based on the Indian tale The Ramayana, Sita Sings the Blues follows Hindu Goddess Sita and her exiled husband Prince Rama. Together the two make their home in the woods. When Rama goes hunting and Sita is kidnapped, unfortunate events unravel that make Rama question his wife s fidelity. Created with vivid colors and the music of Annette Hanshaw, director Nina Paley uses the ancient Indian story to parallel events from her own life.

Nina Paley's Sita Sings the Blues is a wonderful animated film expressing the trials and tribulations felt by a contemporary woman through her reflections and comparison with the Hindu mythological character Sita, from the Ramayana. The comedic timing from the collection of actors is honest and refreshing. Sita's character singing classic blues is a lovely interpretation of her predicament and Paley's animation (which she executed completely herself) is rich and evocative. The filmmaker has wonderful merchandise including t-shirts of the character available on her website. These make for wonderful gifts, as does this high quality DVD box set.

Just released 6/21/09 by Merrihew from audio tape:

"These two selections are the best sounding of a batch of homemade recordings that Annette Hanshaw did. Her husband copied them onto a tape for a friend of mine. I don't know when they were made but on one of the records she refers to "Steve Cochran's looks". He was a big movie star for a couple of years around 1950. So that's a hint."

    FIRST RECORDING OF ANNETTE HANSHAW

This is 6 song clips and/or full songs also with Annette chatting in between with the technician "Jack." None of these ever were made into recordings so save them! Annette was 24 years old here.
