This lens is G-Rated, but if you are pro-Santa, I warn you to keep your kids away before I "sully" them with the truth.

I cannot put my finger on the root of my displeasure, but grown-ups perpetuating the Santa myth -- lying to their children, and some to the point of manipulation -- makes my skin crawl during the holiday season.

Note, that I used the generic "holiday season" rather than Christmas. This is not a pro-Christianity lens. I am agnostic. This lens is anti-Santa (and on Santa, I am most decidedly atheist).

I just think teaching children the Santa myth is harmful. Maybe it does no harm. I intend to read about the matter and post what I find here.

In the meantime, I know these truths: Sheltering restricts the mind. Santa is a lie.

Reader Feedback

Let's not insult ourselves by asking if Santa Claus is real. Instead, is teaching kids to believe in Santa beneficial or harmful?

Santa is great! Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist (and of course, poor) kids really miss out!

Big Jim Slade says:

Are you insane? Santa brings me things. I do my homework and pretend to be nice to my parents because Santa brings me great gifts. Do you think I would ever tell my parents that he was fake? You have to be out of your mind.

Santa leaves heavy "Claus" marks on the psyche.

SusanVillasLewis says:

My mother never led us on to believe that Santa was real. (Or the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc.) One, Santa is a distraction/substitution for God. Two, you're lying to your kid and how are they ever going to trust you after that.

Reg_Brittain says:

Santa is ridiculous and children are so impressionable. What's the harm in being honest with your kids and teaching them to focus on giving rather than receiving?

Pro-Santa people are vehement!

I've had it said to me that I lack the "Christmas spirit" and I am a Scrooge. These hurtful comments disrespect my true nature. Good thing I don't go about "tipping kids off" with the truth. I might not be here to publish this lens.

Great choice of topic. Glad to know I'm not the only person who's anti-Santa, although for somewhat different reasons. Look forward to seeing how you develop this.
