Antique Collecting For Beginners Part 1

Antique Carnival Glass | Pink Depression Glass | Antique Roseville Pottery

How do people get started in collecting antiques? Many people first get introduced to antiques when their Grandma or Mother gives them or passes on a family heirloom. This is often something that has a lot of sentimental value to both the person giving the gift and the reciever. Usually things like Antique Carnival Glass, a piece of pink depression glass or a fine antique roseville pottery vase. This often sparks a desiger by the reciepient to start collection antiques.
Antique collecting for me started when I was a young boy attending my the auction of my Grandfather's farm after an accident that left him unable to continue the family farm. I was amazed at the speed and song like voice of the auctioneer as he quickly brought items up to sell and passed them off to the buyer. I couldn't believe the sheer number of people that showed up to buy my Grandpa's old junk. This facination with auctions also led me to purse my own auction license.
Knowing that you want to start collecting antiques isn't enough to get started. If you want to begin collecting antiques and not be paying way too much for them you need to learn some basics about what it is your collecting. If you decide to collect carnival glass, depression glass or pottery you want to gain as much knowledge about the items as possible. I suggest going to the library and getting some collectors guides and starte reading up on antique carnival glass, depression glass and the pottery you want to collect. Another good way to gain insight into the value of your antiques is to go to local auctions and observer what sells and for how much. Ebay is another option you do a search for antique carnival glass, pink depression glass or roseville pottery and monitor how much each item is bringing and what it sells for by selecting the completed auctions button after you do your search.
These are just a few Ideas to get you started antique collecting and I should caution you that it is not only addictive but can end up being quite time consuming and a drain on the wallet.
