Because of the long trails and the range of elevation in Great Basin National Park this hiking gear is very important. Flank each side of your front door with large garden urns. Begin by filling each urn with dirt and inserting a long metal pipe down the center of the urn; this will act as a support rod. Next, nestle beautiful fall leaves from your yard on top of the urn surrounding the perimeter. If fall leaves have not yet fallen in your area, simply purchase dried leaves at your local craft store. Finally, place 3 pumpkins in various sizes onto the re-bar, starting with the largest on the bottom, the medium sized pumpkin next, followed by the smallest one last. You will need to break off the stem of the large and medium pumpkin in order for them to stack nicely. When finished, it will resemble a pyramid shape.

Cut apart two 18" grapevine wreaths and untangle them to make a long twig garland. Starting at bottom left side of doorframe; attach siding clips or sticky hooks, spaced periodically around door frame. When finished, tie on grapevine garland up, over and down your doorway. You may need to use pipe cleaners or small wires to attach it to the clips. Add a strand of orange/amber lights to grapevine garland and intersperse fall leaves to give the garland a natural look. The effect is breathtaking especially in the evening. On the ground surrounding your urns nestle gourds, pumpkins & Indian corn with small hay bales.

If you have ferns or potted plants outside, simply nestle in pumpkins, gourds, and cat tails for a quick & easy fall look. A fall bow is a nice added touch.

Get the children involved by painting rocks. Simply gather rocks of various sizes. For pumpkins, paint them with orange craft paint, let dry and use permanent black markers to draw on silly or scary pumpkin faces. For ghosts, find long slim rocks and paint them white. Don't forget to give them goofy or eerie black eyes. Have each child sign and date the bottom of their creation. Scatter your completed rocks throughout the yard, next to your mailbox & by the front door for a spooky effect. This is a very cheap craft to do with the kids each year and a great way to express their creativity!

If you have access to corn shocks simply poke a garden shovel into the ground, this will act as the base to which you tie your corn shocks to. A pretty fall bow or jute string will keep the corn shocks together and from blowing away. Place corn shocks at the end of your driveway, near a garden arbor, or anywhere you want a focal point. Surround shocks with pumpkins, gourds & hay bales. A scarecrow nestled near the shocks looks fabulous & adds interest.

Akrotiri, a pleasant wine village on the south tip of the island, was a Venetian stronghold and although damaged in the earthquake the fort still stands at the top of the town. There are beaches nearby one either coast, and a pretty path along the caldera rim. The first clues that something else may have once been here came in the 1860s; while digging pumice for the rebuilding of Port Said, ancient walls kept getting in the way. French archaeologists came and unearthed carbonized food, vases, frescoes and a pure copper saw. In 1967 Spyridon Marinatos following his hunch about the destruction of Minoan Crete, returned to the site. The trenches were disappointing until, 15 ft below the surface, they suddenly broke through into rooms full of huge storage vases, or pithoi, belonging to what turned out to be the best preserved prehistoric city in Greece.

The strange and wonderful Minoan city, buried in c. 1550 BC is laboriously being liberated from its thick sepulchral shell of tephra - the same material used to make cement for tombstones. Protected by its huge modern roof, a carpet of volcanic dust silences footsteps on paved lanes laid 3,500 years ago, amid houses that stand up to three storeys high, some of rubble masonry, some in fine ashlar, with stone stairways and intact doors and windows. Although it has no street plan, the city's sophisticated drainage makes older Greek visitors laugh because of its resemblance to the sewage systems in the villages they grew up in. Some rooms still contain their giant pithoi, and in general the size of the storage areas and cooking pots suggests a communal life and collective economy The residents must have had ample warning that their island was about to blow its top: no jewellery or other valuables were found, and the only skeleton found so far belonged to a pig. As they escaped they must have shed more than a few tears for life at Akrotiri was sweet, judging by the ash imprints of their elaborate wooden furniture their beautiful ceramics and the famous frescoes full of colour and life - every house had a least one frescoed room; one, unique in peace-loving Minoan art, shows a sea battle. In one of the houses is the grave of Marinatos, who died after a fall on the site and requested to be buried by his life's work.

Cleaning your Terra Cotta pots is not difficult and can have great benefits for your plants. When you fertilize your plants, it helps them grow healthy and strong, but the fertilizer can stain the terra cotta pots. Terra Cotta is a porous material that will also draw out the minerals in the soil. These stains are not only unsightly, but plant diseases could actually be living inside these deposits. Before moving any new plants to an old Terra Cotta Pot, it is a good idea to use the following steps to clean the pot.

1. Soak the Terra Cotta pot overnight in a mixture of ten parts of water to one part bleach. It is easiest to use a plastic five gallon bucket for smaller pots, and a garbage can or bathtub for larger pots. The more time the Terra Cotta pot spends in the solution, the easier it will be to clean.
2. Use a wire brush to scrub the inside of the pot. You may need to use a scrapper or razor blade for particularly stubborn sections. Be careful not to use too much force, so you don't damage the pot, or yourself.
3. Soak in clean water to remove all bleach after you have thoroughly scrubbed the Terra Cotta pot. It is important to remove all traces of the bleach, or it can harm your new plants.

Cleaning your Terra Cotta pots before you introduce new plants is a very healthy thing to do for your garden, and your plants will love you for it. Just make sure you have removed all vestiges of bleach before you introduce the new plants.

Terra cotta flower pots make a bright and cheery pot for your favorite plants or whatever you want to use them for. I have mine sitting on my patio table with my favorite flowers. In the winter I put artificial flowers or greenery so my patio still looks cheery. You can use just about anything you would like. A water butt is a large often plastic container used to collect rain water. It is a great way to help the environment - not to mention the money you will save if you are on a water meter.
Water Butts first became popular in the mainstream a few years ago with the introduction of hose pipe bans across certain areas of the UK. Gardeners were suddenly faced with the dilemma of how to maintain their lush green lawns without having to spend hours with a watering can!

Using a water butt means you can collect hundreds or even thousands of litres of rainwater that would have otherwise gone down the drain. They are very simple to use, you just make a hole for your drainpipe (some even come ready cut out) and your on your way. You can also buy rain diverters so that once it is full the excess water simply continues down the drainpipe.
