Anxiety Disorders are amongst the most commonly reported mental health problems in the world.
Anxiety disorders are common in all ages.
The occurrence of specific phobias in children and adolescents is estimated to range from 1 percent to as high as 9.2 percent.
Anxiety disorders are an additional problem for health professionals because the physical symptoms of anxiety frequently bring people to primary care doctors or emergency rooms.

Anxiety disorders are serious medical illnesses.
These disorders fill people's lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear. Anxiety disorders are among the most common of all the mental disorders. Many people misunderstand these disorders and think people should be able to overcome the symptoms by sheer willpower.
Anxiety disorders are common in many Western countries, and conventional drugs like benzodiazepines are often prescribed to relieve anxiety.
However, these drugs have worrisome short-term and long-term side effects.

Anxiety disorders are so heterogeneous that the relative roles of these factors are likely to differ.
Some anxiety disorders, like panic disorder, appear to have a stronger genetic basis than others, although actual genes have not been identified.

Anxiety disorders are real and persistent health problems that affect more than one in every ten Americans at some point during their lifetime.
Sadly, only about one-fourth of those with anxiety disorders ever get professional help. Anxiety disorders are often accompanied by depression. Risk of suicide is high.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common of childhood disorders. According to one study of 9- to 17-year-olds, as many as 13 of every 100 young people have an anxiety disorder (U.S. Anxiety disorders are when anxious feelings are present much of the time, even when there is no obvious cause for them.

A person may be continually uncomfortable and tense. Anxiety disorders are the most common, affecting nearly 15% of people at some time in their lives.
Depressive disorders occur nearly 8% in our lifetimes, while 2% of people will experience schizophrenia in their lifetimes.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent among people with alcoholism. Moreover, long-term alcohol use can itself cause biologic changes that may actually produce anxiety and depression.
Anxiety disorders are common in the general population around the world They constitute a substantial proportion of the global burden of disease, and are projected to form the second most common cause of disability by 2020. Anxiety disorders are a group of disorders which affect behaviour, thoughts, emotions and physical health.

Research into their origins continues, but it is believed they are caused by a combination of biological factors and an individuals personal circumstances, much like other health problems, such as heart disease or diabetes.

Anxiety disorders are common in children and young people. Specific phobias usually develop sometime during childhood.
Anxiety disorders are treatable conditions and respond to the front-line interventions such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors and cognitive behavioral therapy.

However, only about 60% of patients respond to those treatments to any significant degree. Anxiety disorders are very common psychiatric conditions and are very responsive to treatment. At one time or another everyone has experienced anxiety or fear.

Anxiety disorders are complex emotional disturbances that have many related counterparts.

Anxiety disorders are different from everyday anxiety in that the anxiety associated with disorders is more intense, lasts longer, and can lead to phobias.

What is important from the perspective of daily living and quality of life is to understand how one's anxiety manifests, what keeps it active, and how one can learn to alter responses to, and therefore master anxiety. Anxiety disorders are a unique group of illnesses that fill people's lives with persistent, excessive and unreasonable anxiety, worry and fear.
They include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder (SAD) and specific phobias.

Anxiety Disorders are most likely caused by a combination of biological and situational factors. Parents and children can be optimistic since Anxiety Disorders are among the most readily and effectively treated mental disorders with cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication.

Tips to Help you Fight Stress

Stress, what exactly is it, what causes it, why does it affect our lives usually adversely, and what can we do about it?

Well, firstly, stress is a psychological and physiological response to events that upset our personal balance in some way, often resulting in physical or mental health problems. Stress is part of the natural human 'fight or flight' response which has been with us since the beginning of time.

Stress can be caused by anything that requires you to adjust to a change in your environment, it can be brought about by a traumatic accident, death, or emergency situation, and it can also be a side effect of a serious illness or disease. Stress is often caused by financial worries, or loss of a partner; job pressures, inadequate training, trying to live up to other peoples' expectations, jealousy, anger, greed, love, and hate can all cause stress in our lives.

The problems of stress can easily compound if it is not possible to satisfactorily deal with a particular stress situation at the time; a person's safe and secure life can very quickly become extremely disrupted leading to physical and mental health problems and sometimes homelessness or addictions.

Now to answer the question "What can we do about it?" Here are 5 tips that should help you to fight stress:

1) Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and yoga can help you deal effectively with stress. Relaxation can help lower blood pressure, promote a feeling of wellness, and hopefully can help bring on a restful night's sleep.

2) Take time for yourself. Relax in a nice hot bath with some herb oils in, turn the lights down low and listen to peaceful music, read a book that you enjoy, take up a hobby you enjoy such as gardening, go swimming or go to the library.

3) Perhaps your kids are stressed out, thus causing you to be stressed out. Listen carefully to teens and watch for overloading or signs of bullying. Try to be actively involved with your kids in sports, plays, and school functions. Talk to the teachers at your child's school. If a teen talks about or shows signs of being overly stressed, a consultation with a child and adolescent psychiatrist or qualified mental health professional may be helpful.

4) Aerobic exercise has been shown to release endorphins (natural substances that help you feel better and maintain a positive attitude). Walking or swimming is an excellent way to enjoy aerobic exercises.

5) St. John's Wort is a natural formula held in high regard by many to help relieve anxiety and symptoms of stress, helping you to feel more relaxed.

It is very important to get stress down in our lives and if you still feel stressed out in life after trying some or all of the techniques above, it is advisable to talk to your local Doctor who will be able to help with problems of high blood pressure and depression.

Depression and Anxiety

Hardly anyone feels deliriously happy all the time. Fluctuations in mood are natural and normal. However, if periods of low mood are prolonged and persistent then it may indicate clinical depression.

Feelings of sadness or depressed mood are natural reactions to loss or unhappy events. However, in the case of clinical depression the feelings of sadness and lowered mood are disproportionate and prolonged. Usually the depressed mood will be accompanied by feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, lack of self-worth, pessimism and self-criticism. In more severe cases suicidal thoughts and thoughts of self-harm may also be present. These psychological symptoms influence the central nervous system and may cause the patient to display a variety of physical symptoms as well. The most common physical symptoms being; fatigue, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, headaches, body aches and diminished sex drive.

Depression and anxiety quite often, but not always, go hand in hand. Anxiety is a natural response to stresses. Just like depression, however, it becomes a problem when the intensity and duration of this response is out of proportion to the stimulus. For instance, it is quite normal to feel anxious when confronted with a dangerous or daunting task or even when placed in certain stressful social situations.

However, in a case of anxiety disorder the feeling of anxiousness may prevail well after the stressful stimulus has been removed. The feeling of anxiety may reach such proportions and become so pervasive that it interferes in the person's ability to perform normal daily functions. The physical symptoms of anxiety may include sweaty palms, sweating in general, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, dizziness, diarrhea, blushing, nausea or dry mouth. Anxiety disorders may present as specific phobias where the anxiety is triggered by a particular event, situation or thing. For instance arachnophobia, which is an irrational and excessive fear of spiders. On the other hand anxiety may be less specific and present itself as a generalized anxiety disorder. In this case the anxiety is not related to anything specific but is a state of tension and chronic worry even though there is no apparent or proximate cause.

Sufferers of both depression and anxiety have a tendency to withdraw and consequently an inclination to self-medicate. This can lead to abuse of alcohol and other substances. Needless to say this does not help their situation and can well lead to a rapid downward spiral into total loss of control.

There are many treatments for depression and anxiety and the treatment regimen must be customized to the individual circumstances. However, the broad categories of treatment include:

1. Medication - Research has indicated that depression is often accompanied by changes in the chemical balance in the brain. These chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine affect the neurological messages transmitted by the brain and the receptors of these messages and can directly influence mood. Many modern medications for depression such as Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI's for short) attempt to correct this chemical imbalance and can provide fast relief from nervousness, anxiety, agitation, sleeplessness etc.

2. Psychological and cognitive therapies - These strategies aim to influence the patient's behavior and thought processes and their response to external stimuli

3. Strategies for coping - Stress is a part of normal daily life. Teaching patients skills to cope and react to these stresses in a positive manner can help to deal with anxiety and depression.

4. Alternative treatments and therapies - Herbal remedies such as St John's Wort are commonly recommended for mild depression.

While depression and anxiety may appear to a third party to be a totally unrealistic and irrational response, it is very real to the patient. Support of family and/or a wider social network coupled with appropriate and timely medical help is vital to stop its progression.

The good news is that most depression and anxiety can be treated effectively if the patient seeks help.
