Optimism

by Forrest McKinnis

Dear Anxiety;

I can honestly admit that I've always been a "glass half empty" person by nature. My type "A" personality has led me to believe--if I don't fill the glass--it almost certainly will not fill itself. Yet, as I ran tonight in preparation for a 10 k in mid-November it dawned on me, I am surrounded by many of those evil "glass half full" folks! Thus, prompting me to ask the question; why do these folks bring light in my life. Its optimism! Its my brothers insight to see those yellow lines that divide total strangers on congested bi-ways as guardian angles leading us anywhere we want to go in life (thanks Cody). Its my grandma who has suffered from blindness for the past 15 years, but wakes every day with the hope a cure will be found and she'll be able to drive again. It is my mother who pasted away a year ago who never led her children to believe she was "that sick". Its my other grandma who can still be found dancing to the pep band at a high school basketball game. Its a sister who understands that work should be done when we are asked, but we all should leave time to smile. Finally, its a father who enjoys a chilled glass of whiskey and only worries about sleeping when he is pushing up daisy's. You see--in July I got really sick--and started feeling bad for myself. I no longer was "perfect". Then I looked around my family and friends and realized I had to start seeing things through a different lens. In many respects I was tired of fighting, but optimism would lead me to say, "I'm lucky to be tired of feeling bad". Through it all as I rounded the corner of my run this evening it hit me--all of those "glass half full" folks don't except their fate, instead they fight to better what fate they have. For that I am greatful:)

The Master List of 'Forum' Policy

Top 10 List

Anxiety Zone

The top dog. You will find great interaction between anxiety suffers from all levels. Caution! This forum is monitored closely and does not allow users to 'spam' in their posts. This site is free and requires registration.

Mental Health Forum

A great deal of time and effort has clearly been placed on the construction of this forum. It has well over 100,000 participants. Will allow you to post URL's after 15 successful posts, but has a clearly defined participant policy. Anxiety suffers can get great advice here.

Anxiety Form.Net

This is one of my favorite forums, participants seem to be actively involved in discussion and usually repond in a prompt manner to your posts. This site does allow registered participants to post URL's as long as their are appropriate to the forum topic. Great community to be part of. Gold Star Award.

Anxiety Support Forum

I must admit this is not one of my top forums, however it provides another support group for those suffering from anxiety. Very little participation and administered loosely, URL's are postable along with 'spam' if you can cover it up well. This is good start if you don't want to join any of the major forums offered on this site.

Healing Well.Com

This support group receives another Gold Star from me. It is a well organized forum with many different topics up for discussion. It also has a large member list. It will allow you to post URL's after 7 days of participation and successfully posting 15 replies.

Small Steps Forum

This is the creme de la creme of anxiety forums. Small steps really focuses on the challenges of those with Panic Attacks and offers support groups for those suffering from anxiety. A huge member list provides quality dialogue. There is a waiting period to become a member after you complete your free registration.

Overcome Anxiety.com

I loved this forum for its unique topic. It deals with youth who are suffering from anxiety. Specifically, you will find great discussion on the effects of athletics on children who suffer from anxiety. If you unique where the criteria for winning a grammy, this takes the cake. Great forum!

S.A.D.

Social Anxiety is a real problem among people in the world. Think about what it would be like to be scared to interact with our fellow man. This forum tackles the social anxiety topic and supports school related issues in terms of social anxiety. Another good forum for our young folks.

Generic Anxiety Forum

Blah! If you are just need of something that is simple and easy to register for, I would suggest this forum, but it offers very little in the advancement of anxiety control.

Anxiety Zone

'It took awhile, but what's 80 years among friends, huh?' This site had a great deal of time and effort placed into its functionality. It's another Gold Star forum that has a successful members list. I believe I might have saved the best for last.
