Personalizing your Rental

If you live in a rented apartment, you are sure to have several restrictions when it comes to decorating options. Stark white walls with absolutely nothing to break the austerity are the first sight that greets you as you enter any room and yet any hopes to livening things up a bit with a dash of paint are dashed as your landlord forbids you to make any permanent or semi-permanent changes. No lifting up the carpeting to expose the hardwood floors and no making any changes to cabinets and other fixtures.

Even if it is only a temporary place to stay in, an apartment is still home and home décor plays an important role. Everybody looks forward to having a home that is a reflection of themselves and their taste. Everybody wants a place that is attractive and pleasant; a place that makes them feel proud when they or their guests walk in through the front door.

Wonderful Rental Décor Tips

Use the following tips when decorating your apartment:

  • Incorporate color with colorful accessories everywhere. Throw pillows in a many different textures and colors add a punch of vibrant color to your room. Replace a white lampshade with one with that is bursting with color. Use colorful glazed pottery, woven baskets in different colors and plenty of flowers; real as well as artificial. No one will even notice that the walls are white as long as you incorporate color into your décor.
  • Use fabrics. Fabrics can be a great way to spruce up a room. Cannot sew? Don't let that stop you. Just use simple basting tape to make a seam for a window curtains, table cloths and pillow covers. Fabric can be purchased inexpensively at a variety of stores, including some craft stores. Look for sales and find fabrics that will match the colors you use in your home. Just draping fabric everywhere can add character and color to your room.
  • Use rugs. Area rugs, which were earlier used to keep feet warm on a wood or tile floor and also keep the floor from scuffing in high traffic areas, is now a major home décor option. Rugs are inexpensive and come in a variety of different styles and colors. Add color beneath your feet with a beautiful area rug in every room; consider shag area rugs for a fun, modern approach. When it is time to move, you can roll the rug up and take it with you.
  • Hang wall hangings with adhesive hanging tape. If you have a "no nail hole" clause in your lease, or have to pay for the nail holes to be repaired, use adhesive hanging tape and dress your walls with photographs, paintings or other wall hangings. Double backed adhesive tape is strong enough to keep a lightweight picture frame on the wall. Best of all, it leaves no mark when removed.
