1st Generation iPod
1st Generation iPod
The 1st generation iPod is the first iPod model by Apple announced on October 23, 2001, with dimensions to rival the established competition. It stood 4inches high and less than 3inches wide with a weight of around 6ounces. This initial iPod had a 5GB memory which could hold up to 1000 songs. It also had a high resolution screen and a revolutionary type of control system.
Critics panned the unit's price, but it proved an instant hit in the marketplace, quickly,However at $399 it was considered a major purchase.
The 1st generation iPod featured four buttons (Menu, Play/Pause, Back, and Forward) arranged around the circumference of the scroll wheel, and one Select button in the center.
Features of this version is as follows
1. Mechanical scroll wheel
2. Weight about 6.5 ounces
3. Connected to the Mac via a standard Fire Wire Cable
4. Battery lasted about 10hrs
5. Capacity of the hard drive was 5GB
6. Price $399
Overtaking earlier hard drive MP3 players such as the NOMAD Jukebox. In March 2002 Apple
announced a 10 GB version priced at $499.
It's improvements are as follows:
1. Capacity increased up to 10GB
2. Added a Contacts feature and some equalization settings.
3. Price increased up to $499.
2nd Generation iPod
2nd Generation iPod
The 2nd generation iPod came in 10 GB and 20 GB capacities and was introduced on July 17, 2002, at Macworld, and the mechanical scroll wheel of the original was replaced with a touch-sensitive, non-mechanical one (manufactured by Synaptics), termed a "touch wheel".
The 20 GB iPod slightly exceeded its 1st generation counterpart in thickness and weight, while the 10 GB model was slimmer. It came with a carrying case and wired remote and it was the first one that was compatible with Windows.
The 2nd Generation iPod had the advantage of being compatible with PCs through a FireWire cable. There was also now software for use with Windows which opened the iPod up to a lot more users. The actual iPod itself changed very little. The scroll wheel became a solid fixture as apposed to a spinning wheel and there was an extra port for the attachment of a FireWire cable.
In December 2002 Apple released 4 limited-edition, laser-engraved, autographed iPods from Back, Tony Hawk, Madonna, and No Doubt.
Features of this version is as follows
1. Introducing a touch sensitive scroll wheel
2. Available Capacities 10GB and 20GB
3. Compatable with PC's with the help of Fire Wire cables
3rd Generation iPod
3rd Generation iPod
The 3rd generation iPod featured the four buttons above the touch wheel with "select" in the center and slightly smaller than its predecessors and was introduced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs on April 28, 2003. They had more distinctively beveled edges and Apple produced 10 GB, 15 GB, 20 GB, 30 GB, and 40 GB versions.
One of the biggest changes to this new model was the ability to link it to a PC with a USB cable; the USB port was a lot more common on PCs than the FireWire port and so many more people could successfully use an iPod with their home computer. The device supported syncing via both USB and FireWire.
These iPods also uses a 30-pin connector called the Dock Connector (longer and flatter than a FireWire connector). The iPod Dock came bundled with all but the least expensive iPod and also retailed separately. It featured touch-sensitive buttons located between the display and touch wheel. The new buttons featured red backlighting.
The touch-sensitive buttons, which was built upon the touch-sensitive scroll wheel introduced in the 2nd generation iPod, makes it unique in that it has no external moving parts (other than the hold slider on the top of the unit) and is the only iPod that doesn't have its buttons surrounding the wheel. The buttons came off the sides and were realigned (and made touch-sensitive) above the wheel, ultimately making one-handed navigation.
Apple stopped shipping separate Mac and Windows versions of the unit and instead, all iPods were shipped with their hard drives formatted for Macintosh use; they included CD-ROM featuring a Windows utility which could be reformatted for use with a Windows PC.
Features of this version is as follows:
1. Available Capacities 10 GB, 15 GB, 20 GB, 30 GB, and 40 GB versions.
2. Introduction of USB cables
3. Dock connectors was introduced
4th Generation iPod
4th Generation iPod
The 4th generation iPod integrated the four buttons into the scrollwheel and it's considered the model in which sales greatly increased, thus starting the "iPod Craze". In the most obvious difference from its predecessors, the 4th generation iPod carries over the click-wheel design introduced on the iPod Mini and was introduced in July 2004.
The iPod mini took the iPod in a whole new direction - small is beautiful. It was only half the size of the original iPod and because of its compact size the face changed quite dramatically in that the function buttons were rendered obsolete and everything was controlled by the scroll wheel. It also had to have a smaller screen.
Some users criticized the click wheel because it does not have the backlight that the 3rd generation iPod buttons had, but others noted that having the buttons on the compass points largely removed any need for backlighting.
Other minor changes included the addition of a "Shuffle Songs" option on the top-level menu to make it more convenient for users.
Most notable feature was its click wheel; clickable areas located on the touch-sensitive scroll wheel itself replaced the four control buttons across the top - an idea picked up from the successful iPod mini. Capacities were 20GB and 40GB for this version. The battery life improved to around 12 hours
Apple iPod Photo 40-60GB was the first version with a color screen. Built-in 2-inch LCD screen or TV screen via a AV cable allowed to view photos. 40GB and 60GB versions released and battery life increase up to 15 hrs for music.
Apple got rid of the iPod Photo and gave the regular fourth-generation iPod a color screen. Available capacities were 20GB and 60GB. The battery lasted around 16 hours. Apple made a significant improvement when it added the ability to view photos on the iPod that were transferred from a camera via a third-party camera connector.
By now Apple had pretty much conquered the digital audio device market but their next release proved to be a step towards taking over the flash drive market as well. This happened in January 2005 and was named the iPod shuffle. The shuffle was the smallest model yet and didn't include an LCD screen on the face. However it's 512MB memory was at least twice the size of its nearest competitor and the fact that it actually shuffled the songs so that the user never knew what was coming next and its very low price of $99 meant that the little iPod sold just as well as every other model before it.
The last of the 4th Generation iPods entered the market in July 2005 and was the tiniest to date. The iPod nano made use of a high capacity flash memory chip which enabled it to have the considerable memory of 4GB but still be…well, nano! The nano had new features as well such as calendars, address books, world times and games.
Apple released a black-and-red edition of the fourth-generation iPod called iPod U2 Special Edition on October 28, 2004.It had a black front with a red click wheel (the colors of U2's album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb), and featured the signatures of U2's band members engraved on the back.
Apple discontinued the iPod U2 Special Edition with the introduction of the 5th generation iPod on October 12, 2005.
Apple released a limited-edition Harry Potter 4th generation 20 GB iPod that featured a laser engraved Hogwarts crest on the back on September 7, 2005.This model was superseded on October 12, 2005 with a 5th generation Harry Potter 30 GB Collector's iPod.
5th Generation iPod
5th Generation iPod
The newest iPod is the 5th Generation iPod video. This has the capability of playing music videos, TV programmes and films downloaded from the iTunes Music Store. It has all of the features of the nano but as its full colour screen is bigger the overall dimensions are also slightly bigger.
The 5th generation iPod is often called the iPod video or the video iPod which was released on October 12, 2005 and it's available in 30 GB and 60 GB capacity models. It has the ability to play MPEG-4 and H.264 video with resolutions of up to 480 x 480 (maximum macroblock (16x16 pixel) count of 900) and 320 x 240 (maximum macroblock (16x16 pixel) count of 300), respectively (videos purchased from the iTunes Music Store are limited to 320 x 240).
You can play widescreen resolutions up to 640x360 using MPEG-4 and 400 x 192 using H.264 (total macroblock count falls within the stated maximums).
5th generation models have a 65,536 colour (16-bit) screen, with a 320 x 240 QVGA transflective TFT display, and are able to display video on an external TV via the AV cable accessory, which plugs into the headphone minijack and splits into composite video and audio output connectors with RCA jacks.
It can also display video on an external TV using the iPod AV or S-video cables with the iPod Universal Dock. The dimensions are 103.5 x 61.8 x 11.0 mm for the 30 GB version, and 103.5 x 61.8 x 14.0 mm for the 60 GB version.
The screen size is now 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) diagonally, 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) larger than the previous iPod. It is 30% thinner than the previous full-size iPod. The battery life for the 30 GB is 14 hours and for the 60GB is around 20 hours. Watching movies reduces that amount to 2 and 3 hours respectively.
Apple included the video playback capabilities which were available with several other market leading players.Another interesting yet quiet introduction was an audio recording feature. Battery life was about 16.5 hours for audio playback and nearly 2.5 hours for video playback.
The click wheel design is the same as the previous generation, but is marginally smaller (1.5" diameter) than before. The new click wheel is completely flat, unlike older models where the center button is slightly rounded and raised.
Apple stopped producing iPods with the click wheels used in the 4th generation iPod and iPod Mini from their previous supplier, Synaptics, and now use an in-house solution.
Like the iPod Nano, the 5th generation iPod comes in two colors, white and black, and it features the World Clock, Stopwatch, and Screen Lock applications.
The 5th generation iPod no longer supports file transfers via FireWire, but still supports charging using FireWire. This is most likely due to the increased popularity of Hi-Speed USB 2.0 in the consumer market as well as decreasing manufacturing component costs by lowering the complexity of the circuit boards and removing unnecessary accessories.
Apple iPod (80GB) which is the current iPod actually didn't add much to the previous generation, though the capacity increased (30GB and 80GB models are available) and prices dropped a bit. The most notable improvements are to video battery life and screen brightness. Two interesting new features are a search function and the ability to play full-fledged video games available at the iTunes Music Store.
