How to Repair an Apple iBook

Ranked #9,252 in Computers & Electronics, #187,681 overall

Macintosh

I have been using Mac computers since the 1980's, before the internet. I also use PC's with the different Windows Operating Systems. Somebody asked me to fix an old Apple iBook G4 laptop computer. It would start up and show the flashing file with a question mark and then change to a blue screen. It wouldn't do anything else or even turn off.

The Repair

It looked like the problem might be with the logic board, that is a problem for some of these computers. There are no Apple service places close and I can fix computers, so I opened it. There are some pictures down below. It was not the logic board. An important screw was missing in the motherboard. That fixed part of the problem. The computer starts up and shuts down faster and easier and it doesn't go to the blue screen at all anymore. It only shows the flashing file with the question mark. That happens when it can't find start up files. The OS is missing and/or the hard drive has failed. I am trying to reinstall the OS, but I can't get the CD-ROM to work either.

Caution:

Be careful opening your computer. Some of the parts could get ruined if they are touched or shocked by static electricity, and you could void your warranty by opening it.

A methodical approach and description is provided which is very helpful, however, the person should have at least the basic knowledge of the computer. Well done.
