Organic Labels And Signs Can Be Confusing

While your shopping at the grocery store, for common products like milk, eggs, produce, meat, and fish some of the labels and signs can be very confusing. Some of these foods will be labeled as natural, organic and quite a few other things-but do you really know the difference? If your going to shell out extra money for these products you should know what specific labels and names are true and which ones are marketing tactics.

What Does The Phrase Natural 'Really' Mean?

Natural is a phrase associated with a number of fruit and vegetable products. Most of the time this a marketing strategy to convince buyers to buy the product. I mean really, all fruits and vegetables are natural, right? The product is natural unless it's a new type of food that has been processed and developed. What you really want is organic food. Organic foods are grown without fertilizers and chemical pesticides.

The Benefits Of Organic Food

The two main benefits to organic foods are you are helping to protect the environment because those chemicals are not being introduced into nature. The other main benefit is that by eating healthy foods you are not ingesting chemicals and are therefore more healthy. Skip over organic fruits and vegetables that you can peel, like oranges and bananas if you're on a budget. Because once you've thrown away the peel, you've also discarded the chemicals. Always rinse off the food when you get home.

No Hormones?

Another common label you will see is "No Hormones." This label usually applies to products such as milk, and meat. This is a false statement because all animals naturally produce hormones. Hormones help animals (even humans) regulate organs in the body, have young, and otherwise function properly. What these labels are really trying to say is that the animal was not given any hormones in a unnatural manner, which is sometimes the case to help animals produce more milk. Not to worry, regardless of hormones the milk and meat is safe for people and is not a violation of the animal's rights.

Making Humane Decisions

The labels that you find on meat and eggs can be a indication of whether or not the animal was caged or if it was penned. This is simply a matter of animal rights, not the quality or nutritional value of the meat. These products may be a bit more expensive, but if you want to make humane decisions, this is the way to go. Reading and understanding labels as well as making healthy choices can be difficult, but learning how to do this will help you make the right choice for you diet.
