Is it possible to use food-grade argan oil for cosmetic purposes?
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 16, 2012 @ 11:32 pm | delete
Hi Amy - if the food grade oil is raw (and preferably organic) then I would say yes. If it's roasted or processed, I would opt for the cosmetic grade.
  • Linda Apr 3, 2012 @ 8:12 pm | delete
I tried a couple drops of argan oil on my face & I barely got one cheek done. There was nothing left in my hand. I read only 2 to 3 drops. Don't understand.
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 5, 2012 @ 1:19 pm | delete
Hi Linda - easy to fix :) Wet your face first and pat lightly with a towel so that your skin is still moist but not dripping wet. Your hands will be moist too if you do this, so the oil won't be soaked up before you apply it to your face. I would also suggest increasing your water intake as it seems that your skin may be dehydrated. Hope that helps!

Does argan oil need to be in dark bottles?
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 5, 2012 @ 1:15 pm | delete
Ideally yes. I store away from sunlight if the bottle isn't dark.

The food you eat really plays a big part in the health of your skin, and reduces acne when done right. But sometime you just have toget rid of pimples fast
  • Georgina-Sweeney Feb 17, 2012 @ 2:12 pm | delete
You're right Merlo. For that purpose, I recommend using the following natural face mask for acne: http://tinyurl.com/FaceMaskForAcne

I also recommend cutting out all sugar and, if you can, dairy - at least until you get your skin back under control and your hormones balanced. If you still suffer from breakouts after a month, consider going on an elimination diet to see what other foods may be affecting your skin. I always address the outside and the inside when it comes to acne.
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 5, 2012 @ 1:21 pm | delete
I totally agree with you Merlo that's why I also wrote a post about foods for the skin. You can find the link at the bottom of the page :)

I just bought an Argan oil but it doesn't smell good at all! It reminds me of manure, or like a barn. Should I go back and complain it is that smell just normal? I miss my rose hip seed oil...
  • Georgina-Sweeney Jan 18, 2012 @ 5:34 pm | delete
Hi Caroline - I'm sorry you don't like the smell of argan oil in its natural state. I mentioned above that argan oil has a distinctive smell that usually wears off after a while. That's why I recommended a couple of options that have been deodorized so that you don't react. You may want to return the one you purchased (if they allow returns on opened product) and purchase one that clearly states that they have removed the smell or added essential oils. I named a few for you above.

    Hope that helps,
    G

i'm glad to hear about this product. My question is about allergies or reactions to the product. Can people with rosacea use it?
  • Georgina-Sweeney Jan 18, 2012 @ 5:38 pm | delete
Hi Papier - I suggest you buy argan oil without essential oils added as they may potentially aggravate sensitive skin. I know I don't tolerate essential oils in skin care products that well even though they are natural. Have you heard about the Rosacea Care line of products? http://rosaceacare.com/ I recommended them to my cousin and she said they helped her rosacea immensely.

I love argan oil - discovered it a few years ago in Morocco - my family thought it was weird and wouldn't use the pure oil I brought back with me. A few years later and every product seems to have added it (especially hair products) and my family keep asking me to get it for them!
  • Georgina-Sweeney Jan 18, 2012 @ 5:39 pm | delete
I love it too PearlHowie - I think I need a trip to Morocco to immerse myself in it ;)

I am addicted to Coconut Oil and use it for my hair and skin, as well as in recipes; but when I want to really treat my skin I use gorgeous Argan Oil. You've created a great Lens - thanks for all the useful info!
  • Georgina-Sweeney Mar 18, 2011 @ 5:59 pm | delete
Thanks for stopping by Synchronicity House - I love to cook with coconut oil or incorporate it into my raw smoothies but found it to be too oily for my face. That's why I love beauty oils like argan oil that moisturize but don't cause me to break out :)
  • Georgina-Sweeney Jan 18, 2012 @ 5:41 pm | delete
Thanks SynchronityHouse - I use coconut oil in smoothies and cooking but didn't like it on my skin. It felt too oily for me. I find that argan oil absorbs really easily and doesn't make me smell like a tropical island - LOL!

Hi Suzbun - how exciting that you're going to Morocco - apparently, the best place to buy argan oil is directly from the women's cooperatives so you're guaranteed an authentic product and a good price. Safe travels!

This oil is becoming very popular. I see it in more and more salons. Good lens, especially on the making of Argan Oil.

I wanted to try this! How can I know product is authentic when buying online? Thanks.
  • Georgina-Sweeney Jan 7, 2011 @ 10:19 am | delete
Hi mgassistant - great question! What I do for extra peace of mind is purchase products from companies that have a strong track record, such as Amazon, and who stand behind the products they sell. Also, check to see if they have a customer service tel # or email for follow-up in case you have questions or experience any difficulties. I hope that helps. All the best, Georgina

Hi Theresa! There are lots of online places, such as Amazon, where you can buy argan oil. You can click on the above links to go straight to Amazon. Or, depending where you live, you might also find it at a local Sephora store. I hope that helps. All the best, Georgina

Hi Yaseen - It's so nice of you to do research for your friend but, unfortunately, I am not qualified to discuss cures for specific conditions. Maybe you could ask your doctor or local pharmacist? They will be sure to help. All the best to you and your friend. G
  • Lexxy Aug 16, 2010 @ 3:04 am | delete
Hi, I'm sure argan oil or sea buckthorn oil can help your friend. These oils are very rich in good fatty acids, just make sure to buy pure organic oil like (Weleda for sea buckthorn, or any moroccon argan oil). Just be sure to put small drops at first let the skin absorb the oil, don't touch and don't tap on the skin, you may do more harm than good. Try it at night the first time, or at a time you know you'll stay in the house. Have someone with you, just in case you might need assistance. One more thing, these oils rejuvenate and purify. Some people who tried the sea buckthorn oil to treat a skin disease (keratosis pilaris) got excellent results, but not right away, it got worst first (I know piles is not a skin disease, but skin is involved...). So use this with precaution and ask a doctor with a PH.d. But then again, by the time you read this, you'll be all cured!

I've been using Argan Oil for a few years now. I tried the raw oil but I didn't care for the smell then I bought it from Amazon from xandra renouvelle. I think they were the first US distributors of Argan oil because it was hard to find a few years ago! They sell Kaeline ( now Kae ) and I've loved every argan product I've purchased from them. I have very dry, sensitive, 40+ year old skin and I'm always getting compliments on my complexion. My favorites are the Day Radiance cream and bath oil. They both smell wonderful! Thanks for all the argan info!
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 23, 2010 @ 3:33 pm | delete
Hi Julie - thanks for sharing your results with us. I already list Kae's (formerly Kaeline's) argan oil in my recommendations above for people who are sensitive to the smell of raw argan oil but hadn't tried the Day Radiance cream. Will have to add it to my ever-growing wish list of new products to try :)
  • denise Apr 1, 2010 @ 8:10 pm | delete
I understand there are two versions of this oil - cosmetic grade and culinary. The difference being that cosmetic grade is cold pressed and not roasted like the culinary grade. Is it possible to ingest the cosmetic grade / cold-pressed version? It's the healthier version for Olive Oil so wouldn't it be the same for Argan oil? Ideally, I'd like to purchase a cold-pressed version and be able to use it for both cosmetic and culinary purposes.
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 1, 2010 @ 10:09 pm | delete
    Hi Denise,

You may not like the taste of the raw, cold-pressed argan oil as it is quite strong-flavored. Also, you will need to avoid cooking at high temperatures with it. Other than those 2 reasons, I don't see anything stopping you from ingesting the raw version. I would recommend you buy organic though. Hope that answers your question.
  • denise Apr 4, 2010 @ 9:26 am | delete
    Hi Georgina,

Thank you for your response. Now onto the hard part - finding a retailer in Toronto, Canada!

    All the best,
    Denise
  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 5, 2010 @ 10:07 am | delete
Hi again - I believe most if not all of the Sephora stores in Toronto sell Josie Maran's argan oil, which is all natural. So you could always check it out there and maybe even get a free sample to see how you like it. Good luck!

Is it ok to mix argan oil with other oils or lotions, creams, etc?
  • Georgina-Sweeney Mar 11, 2010 @ 7:39 pm | delete
Hi Chris - yes, it's ok to mix argan oil with other oils and essential oils (though if you're pregnant, please skip the essential oils). If you mix oils and creams, however, (which contain a variety of ingredients, including water), the shelf life may be reduced and the oil and water may separate over time. So what I do and recommend is put a little cream in the palm of your hand, then add a few drops of argan oil to it and mix together just prior to application, rather than mixing ahead of time in a bottle. Hope that answers your question. Georgina

Do I still need to use a moisturizer and spf under the oil for daytime? I know it has antioxidents but not sure if it is an spf.
  • Georgina-Sweeney Feb 3, 2010 @ 8:24 am | delete
Hi Lisa - great question. Argan oil replaces your daily moisturizer but you still need to use an SPF over it during the daytime (no need to at night-time.) For recommendations on which sunscreen to use, you can visit www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

In the U.S. Sallys Beauty Products sells Argan Oils. I purchased the tiny bottle for my dry, brittle , coarse hair. After years of searching for conditioners that never worked ( usually by the second day after washing , my hair would be dry again) I am amazed at the softness and the shine is like those celebs on t.v. My hair is blonde, 5" below my shoulders , so I used the oil the size of 2 dimes on my palms and rubbed all over washed , wet hair and combed through. You can use your regular conditioner first.

Is argan oil available in Canada, specifically in Vancouver? Do you have an idea where I can buy this product?

Thank you in advance for your help.
  • Georgina-Sweeney Dec 17, 2009 @ 10:30 am | delete
Hi Menchie - I did a quick local search for you and saw that you have a Sephora in Vancouver. They sell Josie Maran's argan oil, so you could go to their store and check it out to see if you like it. It gets good reviews - I just find it a little pricey...

I have been using Tao Med Argan oil (purchased at a pharmacy in Germany) on my candida infected nipples for the last couple of days - which seems to work really well in smoothing and soothing the candida patches; but I am now worried because my baby (19 months old) has been taking in this oil (which I assume is not of a culinary variety) when breastfeeding...do you know anything about the Tao Med oil, and whether I can safely continue using it? Thanks!
  • Georgina-Sweeney Dec 17, 2009 @ 11:38 am | delete
I did a search but couldn't find a list of the Tao Med oil ingredients online. If you list them for me, I can take a look for you and give some general input. However, since we are dealing with a baby, I would always ask your doctor for advice to be on the safe side. Until you find answers to your questions, I would advise stopping use of the Tao Med oil. You can always start using it again if it is proven safe for your baby or once you stop breastfeeding.

I also did a search for natural candida solutions for nipples nad came across this article that recommends using pure coconut oil.

    Hope this helps.

Can I use the DermOrganic on my face as well as my hair?
  • Georgina-Sweeney Jul 26, 2009 @ 4:22 pm | delete
Hi Kathy - great question. My answer would be it depends on the producer and the way they process their particular oil. Since culinary oil is used to add a lot of flavor to a dish, the smell is likely going to be quite intense. If you don't mind that, then I would say go ahead and experiment. The raw, organic oil I recommend above would probably be your best bet since you like to use ingredients in their most natural form. Let us know how you get on! Georgina
  • Kathy Jul 26, 2009 @ 3:46 pm | delete
Hi, I have been reading somewhat on Cosmetic and Culinary Argon Oil (100% Organic). My question is; Can you use the culinary Argon Oil for the hair and skin as well since there is a saying that goes; If you can eat it then you can use it on the skin. For example fruits, yogurt, etc can be used as masks and natural exfoliates.
Please let me know what are the benefits of using Culinary Argon oil for the hair and body?? Thanks

  • Georgina-Sweeney Apr 14, 2009 @ 4:46 pm | in reply to elaine | delete
Hi Elaine! Thanks for your question. The answer all depends on what you want to do with argan oil. If you want to use it as a hair treatment that you wash out after 30 minutes or so, then the 100% raw organic argan oil would be great - you can also use it for your face, body, and nails, making it a great multipurpose product at a reasonable price. However, if you want to use argan oil as a leave-in hair conditioner, then you may find the 100% raw argan oil is too heavy. That's why I mentioned the DermOrganic product as it includes a few other ingredients to make it a little lighter . Bear in mind, also, that the 100% raw argan oil has a nutty, earthy smell (that not everyone likes), so your hair would be smelling of that all day. I hope this helps with your decision. Regards, Georgina

    Hi,

The hair one is not raw and organic?? Why use that one when there's the raw organic one? What's the difference? Why is one for the hair and the other not for the hair?
    thanks.
