About Arkansas, The Natural State

Arkansas was the 25th state to be admitted to the union, on June 15, 1836. Arkansas ranks 29th in area and 32nd in population among the 50 states. The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock, which is also the largest city in the state followed by Fort Smith, located in the western part of the state.

Arkansas is referred to as the Natural State and sometimes as the Diamond State. Arkansas is the only state in the United States where diamonds can be found, which is why the diamond shape was chosen to appear on the state flag. Arkansas is also one of the largest rice-producing states.

Famous Arkansans currently in the public eye include former president Bill Clinton (former governor of the state) and now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as former governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.

Arkansas is a mid-south state, bordered by Oklahoma to the west, Missouri to the north, the Mississippi River and states of Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Texas to the southwest.

The post office abbreviation for Arkansas is AR. Common mistakes: AK is Alaska, not even close to Arkansas, and Arizona's abbreviation is AZ, not AR. Use the correct zip code, though, and the mail will make it through!

I am writing in reference to letter to editor in yesterdays baxter bulletin about animal cruelity. I hope and pray that our government in arkansas will pass the law that makes it a felony for abusing ALL animals in the state. There is no one to protect them like in other states and that is wrong, VERY WRONG!!!!!I belong to the Humaine society of the US, Peta and ASPCA and I am totaly against cruelty to any and all animals. I feed and take care of ferrel cats in my neighborhood. My neighbors disaprove of what I do and trap and kill or poison these animals. This is so wrong. They didn't ask to be dumped by unresponible people. I try to keep them fed and sheltered and they kill them. This is very wrong. They don't do it with dogs, only my cats.
Please pass this law so I can at least stop these people from doing this.
    Thank you: Penne Olsen
