I saw the majority of this series when it aired on PBS and loved every minute of it. Michael is a very likeable guy to start with, and here he honestly shares his experience, up or down, about what it's like not only to travel around the world, but to attempt to remain as faithful as possible to Fogg's itinerary. He also could only use transportation that would have been available at the time, which means no aircrafts.
Phileas Fogg
The story in a nutshell, starting in London:
Phileas Fogg's contemporary members of the Reform Club challenge him to a 20,000 pound wager; could one circumnavigate the globe in 80 days? Fogg and his French valet Passepartout (literally: "goes everywhere") set out to prove it possible and win the wager.
At the time of Fogg's departure from London, a bank robbery takes place, and Scotland Yard Detective Fix is on the case. Fogg fits the description and Fix is hot on the trail, attempting to arrest Fogg at all opportunity.
- Fogg and Passepartout leave London by train at 8:45 pm on October 2, 1872. They are due back at the same time, 80 days later, on December 21st.
- London to Suez, by rail and steamer - 7 days
-
Suez to Bombay, by steamer - 11 days
- Detective Fix follows them on board and bribes the conductor to dock early.
- They arrive in Bombay 2 days ahead of schedule -
Bombay to Calcutta, by rail and elephant - 5 days
- The rail is unfinished however, so Fogg buys an elephant for 2,000 pounds to connect the gap between stations.
- During this time, Fogg and Passepartout rescue Aouda, a young Parsi woman about to be sacrificed by Thuggee worshippers. She now joins them on their voyage.
- This took up the 2 days gain and puts them back on schedule. -
Calcutta to Hong Kong, by steamer - 13 days
- Detective Fix has Fogg and Passepartout arrested in Calcutta. They jump bail and board the steamer to Hong Kong, along with Aouda. -
Hong Kong trouble.
- The voyagers expected to meet Aouda's distant relatives in Hong Kong, with which she was to stay, but they have apparently moved to Holland. Aouda joins the party.
- London still being British soil, Detective Fix is desperate to catch Fogg. He secretly confides in Passepartout, who believes nothing of it.
- Meanwhile, the steamer to Yokohama is to leave a day early. To prevent Passepartout from telling Fogg, Fix gets him drunk and drugged on opium.
- Passepartout still manages to catch the steamer, only he forgets to inform Fogg.
- The next day, Fogg discovers he has missed the boat. -
Hong Kong to Yokohama, by steamer - 6 days
- only Passepartout makes it on the stearmer. -
Hong Kong to Yokohama, by way of Shanghai.
- Fogg, Aouda, and Fix, who joins them as "traveling companion," find a small vessel to Shanghai, then take the steamer to Yokohama. -
Yokohama to San Francisco, by steamer - 22 days
- Fix tells Passepartout he will no longer try to delay Fogg, rather, he will support him in getting back to London as quickly as possible (to have him arrested). -
San Francisco to New York, by rail - 7 days
- During the voyage, The train is attacked by Native Americans, who take Passepartout and 2 other passengers hostage.
- Fogg finds soldiers at a nearby fort and goes on a hostage rescue mission.
- To make up for lost time, Fogg hires a sledge to take them to Omaha, Nebraska, where they take a train to Chicago, Illinois, then another to New York.
- Arriving in New York, they learn they have just missed their steamer for Liverpool. -
New York to London, by steamer - 9 days
- The next day, Fogg finds a steamer heading for Bordeaux, France. As the captain refuses to take them to Liverpool, Fogg accepts the voyage to Bordeaux, then bribes the crew to mutiny once on board and have them change course to Liverpool.
- Going full steam ahead, the boat runs out of fuel. Fogg buys the boat from the captain and has the crew burn all wooden parts to keep the steam going.
- They arrive in Queensland, Ireland, in time to reach London and Liverpool before the deadline. -
Final leg to London
- Back on British soil, Fix has Fogg arrested. A short time later, the misunderstanding has been cleared as the real robbers have already been arrested, however, Fogg has missed his train and returns to London 5 minutes late for his wager. -
The International Date Line
- Foog spends the day at home thinking he has lost the wager. Aouda confesses her love for him and asks him to marry her, which he accepts.
- Getting the Reverend for the marriage, Passepartout learns that it is actually Saturday, and not Sunday, as they all believed; the party travelled East, thus gaining a full day on their journey by crossing the International Date Line.
- Fogg runs to the Club and arrives in time to win the wager.
