The Double Joy of Art and Poetry

Art and poetry are mutually enhancing creations that have enriched humanity for centuries. Along with music, they represent cultural treasures that continue to endure and inspire the world. Pairings of work by such notables as artist Salvador Dali and author Federico Garcia Lorca, and artist Aaron Douglas and the writers of the Harlem Renaissance, are but a couple of celebrated examples.

City of Savannah Adds to Its Rich Cultural Legacy

The city of Savannah, Georgia, long celebrated by tourists and natives alike for its charm, beauty, and cultural diversity, in May 2008 added another jewel to its fabled crown. "ELEMENTAL: The Power of Illuminated Love" (ISBN 9780972114271) is a celebrated gift book by two of the city's most acclaimed creative artists: painter Luther E. Vann, whose work exhibited at the Telfair Museum Jepson Center for the Arts throughout the summer of 2008, and writer Aberjhani, co-author of the award-winning "Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance."

A perfect gift for graduations, father's day, birthdays, and other occasions, ELEMENTAL: The Power of Illuminated Love contains more than 60 brilliant reproductions of Vann's prize-winning work along with statements by the artist on his unique creative vision. In addition, the book also features introductory essays by Aberjhani and accompanying poetry, much of which has been showcased in ESSENCE Magazine and other publications.

Although born in Savannah, Vann spent much of his youth in New York City and took some of his first art lessons there with Harlem Renaissance artist Charles Alston, famed for his public murals, popular magazine covers, and paintings of African-American family life. Vann's current show at the Telfair Museum Jepson Center for the Arts, on exhibit until August 17, 2008, is housed in the facility's Lewis Gallery. The Telfair is the oldest public art museum in the South and Vann is the first African-American Savannah native to have a one-man show at its new state of the art Jepson Center.

In addition to the aforementioned Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance, other books by Aberjhani include the critically acclaimed The Wisdom of W.E.B. Du Bois and his recent title on life, people, and adventures in Savannah: The American Poet Who Went Home Again.
Last summer (2008) thousands of visitors to the Telfair Museum Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, Georgia (USA) discovered Luther E. Vann's exceptional canvases on display during his ELEMENTAL exhibit, and this summer many more are discovering and re-discovering the artist following the recent announcement that he is one of the recipients of the 2009 King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation Arts Awards.

The banquet for the award ceremony is open to the public and will be held at the Beach Institute in Savannah. Tickets are $75 and proceeds go toward operational funds for the King-Tisdell Cottage Museum. For more information on the event, please telephone (912) 234-8000.

ELEMENTAL is currently available at a variety of locations, including: Amazon.com, The Book Lady at 6 E. Liberty Street (912-233-3628); Barnes and Noble; Black Books Plus; The Diaspora Market Place (912-232-2626); Ex Libris Bookstore (912-525=7550); The I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium SC (803) 536-7174; The Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum (912) 231-8900); and The Telfair Museum Jepson Center for the Arts Gift Shop (912) 790-8831.

Art Plus Poetry Equals ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love

Reviews for ELEMENTAL The Power of Illuminated Love

Art and Poetry Lovers Have Their Say

"A beautiful book, the reproductions of the paintings are outstanding. The poems were inspired by the paintings, and make perfect companions for the reproductions%u2026 Elemental is a real delight and was definitely worth the wait."
--News Editor Linda Sickler of CONNECT SAVANNAH

"Vann succeeds because he has a subject--the life observed in houses, on the streets and in the parks of his city--and a technique he has made his own%u2026"
--Art Critic and Painter Bertha Husband

"The beautiful book graces the coffee table my living room, which displays on its walls other great artists I have known and admired. My life is enriched and surrounded by beauty of colors and words by Luther and Aberjhani"
--Miriam Center, author of Scarlett O'Hara Can Go to Hell

"A wondrously amazing book... I see the universal mind in both the paintings and poetry of Elemental. The 'universal mind' is always multi-dimensional--there is always the physical and the spiritual. The book has fusion of here and otherworldliness."
--Art Collector and Critic Dr. Ja A Jahannes

A DYNAMIC DUO OF ART AND POETRY
"Born in Savannah, Georgia, and raised in New York City, Vann is an award-winning artist whose work has drawn praise for the artist's use of different classic and innovative techniques as well as his unique integration of physical and spiritual dimensions. Although his work hangs in public and private collections around the world, ELEMENTAL marks the first published collections of Vann's art, making the book itself an instant collector's item.
"Aberjhani, also a native of Savannah, is the author of several books, including: ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE; THE WISDOM OF W. E. B. DU BOIS; I MADE MY BOY OUT OF POETRY; and STRENGTH TO CARRY ON.
"ELEMENTAL contains more than 50 reproductions of Vann's art dating from the 1970s to the present. Like a number of other modern artists, Vann's work celebrates such public ventures as New York City neighborhoods and black southern culture. However, Vann moves beyond these realms to capture the vitality and relevance of our inner selves. His powerful mapping of dreamscapes, subconscious intention, and spiritual transcendence has prompted comparison to such masters as El Greco, Michelangelo, and Salvadore Dali. At the same time, critics recognize his vision as solely his own."

OZENA and ELEMENTAL

Painted Colors of Love and Wisdom

("Memories, Cousin Ozena" by Luther E. Vann)

If I were to put a number on all the things for which I am grateful in 2008, at the very least that number would be 320 because that's how many sunrises I have seen thus far this year. Days are not something I take for granted, for in the immortal words of the great rhythm and blues singer Dinah Washington, "what a difference a day makes." Indeed, the events that transpire within a single day can overturn the history of centuries, mark our hearts with sorrow, or empower our souls with joy.

Among the blessings of 2008 that have given me reasons to gratefully celebrate has been the publication of my book with the artist Luther E. Vann: ELEMENTAL The Power of Illuminated Love . ELEMENTAL is not only a blessing because it finally saw the light of day after a 17-year struggle to get it published, but because so many enriched the title with their diverse contributions to it.

One of those contributing individuals was Ozena W. Wilcox (Dec 5, 1908- Nov 14, 2008) whose incandescently painted portrait adorns page 3 of ELEMENTAL. Although it was never my privilege to greet Ozena in person, I treasured the honor of getting to know her to some extent through the vibrant expressionistic colors and multidimensional perspective in Vann's portrait of his cousin.

Through Vann's eyes and palette-filled with the swirling energies of violet, pink, green, yellows, and mahogany-- one can find it easy to see and salute the dynamic individuality that marked her singular being. The depth and intensity of wisdom and love accumulated throughout Ozena's 100 years in this world can be measured to some degree by the spectral memories and presences that dwell in the portrait just above her head. They encircle, motivate, sustain, and define her in ways at which we can only guess. The painted colors of that love and wisdom continue to bless not only this author, but many others as well.

And for that I truly am very grateful.

ANGEL OF PEACE by Aberjhani

(from ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love)

Such are these places
where lovers of bliss behold
the angel of peace:

Above the burning,
and below the cold of all
the sad killing fields;

Where poetry sighs,
smiling magic in the lap
of flesh and blood joy;

Upon the shoulders
of elders carved beautiful
by sage artistry;

Where a starbright gown
trails healing through gardens of
eternity's laughter;

In the arms of dreams
that shepherd hope through the eyes
of praying children;

Under waterfalls
bristling silk storms from the shores
of my skin to yours;

In the taste of a
woman glowing firemilk through
the tips of her breasts;

Afloat on rhythms
of minds too stoned on love to
recall how bombs work;

At the edge of a
man's kiss casting holy spells
of sweet compassion;

Inside the beauty
of faith's unburied treasure
sparkling truth and hope;

Beneath trees of song
heavy with angelic light,
evergreen with strength;

Upon the wings of
nightingales trilling comfort
to embattled grace;

In your heart's whisper,
soft as love, that truly all
is well with your soul.

Fit Like Puzzle Pieces

"In many of Vann's works, representational figures recline against backgrounds of rich color, enlightened with halos and peering across the canvas through beams of light. Likewise, Aberjhani's poetry tackles strong religious concepts and rejoices in the power of spirituality. Together, the two fit together like puzzle pieces."

Meet the Artist Luther E. Vann

(photo of Luther E. Vann by John Schmidt)

Luther E. Vann had the advantage of growing up during the 1940s and 1950s in both the city of his birth, Savannah, Georgia, and that of his parents' adopted home, New York City. The former city continues to provide him with inspiring subject matter while the latter provided him with the bulk of his formal training.

As a developing artist, Vann's life in New York City during the mid-twentieth century exposed him to the works of Harlem Renaissance artists such as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Ernest Crichlow, Beauford Delaney, Norman Lewis, and Augusta Fells Savage. In that very concrete sense, his life and work represent a direct link to the Harlem Renaissance.

In addition to studying at the Art Students League in New York, he also studied at the New School for Social Research and at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Studio. His artistic expressiveness encompasses virtually every visual medium: painting, photography, sculpture, and digital creations.

Vann has been the recipient of a number of grants, including funding from the New York State Council for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Georgia Council for the Arts. A first-place prize winner in the 1996 Georgia Arts Festival, his work has hung in group and solo exhibitions through the United States and around the world, including at the Beach Institute in Savannah, the Cinque Gallery in New York City, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum of Arts, and the Telfair Museum. Among his most recent shows was a 2006 exhibition at the Hurn Museum in Savannah followed by the museum's traveling exhibition in Florence, Italy. His work showed as well to critical acclaim in 2007 at the Urban Arts in Alpharetta, Georgia. He also participated at the end of 2007 in the Holiday Fundraiser Exhibition held at the Indigo Sky Community Gallery founded by Jerome Meadows in Savannah.

In addition to hanging in private collections on several continents, Vann's works are also part of public collections like those in the Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, New Jersey; Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York; the King-Tisdell Cottage in Savannah, and the Telfair Museum of Art. Savannah's Abyssinia Baptist Church commissioned the artist to create stained glass depicting the establishment of the Ethiopian church, the first organized Christian church, from Acts 8.

The latter part of 2007 saw Vann continue to challenge himself and grow as an artist by contributing images for two book covers, one the poetry collection entitled The Bridge of Silver Wings; and the other for a novel called Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World. He continues to expand the boundaries of his creative expression with digital creations that fuse elements of original art with photography and design. He participated as well in

As his first book, Elemental: The Power of Illuminated Love, went to press, the artist was completing the construction of a studio gallery in his back yard.

COMING HOME

Spoken Word from ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love

COMING HOME trailer with text from ELEMENTAL the Power of Illuminated Love by Aberjhani

COMING HOME Another path: a road or a bridge in my life. But this one different from the others. Childhood daze summertime spent flying on trains from Savannah to New York, a straight line reaching across innocence to the powers that came to rule my adolescence. But this is another kind of traveling. This is another kind of growing up. In New York a sidewalk could lead to laughter decked out in silk-n-wool suits tailored for good times and smiles that knew a thing or two, about the world. Or they could lead to switchblades already dirty with somebody elses blood, unnecessarily greedy for the taste of mine. But this is another kind of sidewalk. This is another kind of adventure. From up here I can thumb through my thinking as if reading the pages of a hidden history. I can touch all of my beauty and all of my ugliness with the same gesture of holy forgiving. And I can talk with my death and laugh with all the painted sounds of my entire life about the love I want to give this world. But this is a different kind of thinking. This is the loving we were all born to die for. (from the book ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love) by Aberjhani http://www.redroom.com/author/Aberjhani

Vibrant Images, Jazzy Compilations

"Luther Vann's work is a product of the magnetic poles of his personal universe - New York City, where he grew up, and Savannah, where he was born and now lives--and boy, does it show. Images vibrant, packed full of action but not cluttered, jazzy compilations sometimes brushed by chopsticks. Artist Luther E. Vann took some of his first lessons from Harlem Renaissance artist Charles "Spanky" Alston, so it therefore makes sense to the acknowledge the movements influence on his life and creative vision. There are not many artists still with us who can claim such a direct link to the movement that gave the world such treasures as jazz music, the blues, rap, and a wealth of both literature and visual art.
