Big Iceberg Approaching

Acrylic on Canvas Board
8 X 10
2002
By Graham Matthews

If you have seen a few of my paintings, you will know that I just love icebergs! There's just something about them that is quiet and peaceful, but also very dangerous. I also enjoy many of the shapes that are naturally formed in these huge chunks of ice, that were once at home on a huge glacier.

Art Statement - Graham Matthews

I am from a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. I grew up near the ocean, which is the inspiration for most of my artwork. I view the ocean, and nature in general, as beautiful, and untamed, having a personality of its own. The ocean can be calm an serene at times, and wild and untamed at others. It has also been merciless, claiming many lives. My artwork often invokes some of this moodiness and instability.

My drawings and paintings often have wild sweeping lines, undulating curves, spiraling forms, along with surreal looking landmasses. I use these various styles in combination to show movement and unruliness. Sometimes they are complex and dizzying. Many times my artworks are "escapes" from the real world, hence bordering on surreal. This is because I use the real world as a basis and distort it in such a way that seems otherworldly.

Some of my influences through the years are the Group of Seven and Tom Thompson, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Salvador Dali. I also draw my inspiration from everyone and everything around me, such as my faith, and my family. It is the people closest to me that are my greatest influences.

Oil on Canvas
48" X 60"
1998

This painting underwent many changes during its completion, finally ending up with what you see here. It began as a painting of two nude models, male and female, during two separate studio classes. That was the extent of that project during that semester. In the following semester, we were free to paint on any subject matter that we wanted. I decided that I wanted to continue with that panting because it just didn't look "finished". I used the underlying composition to create the forms. My intent was to keep the original figures recognizable, and to create a work of art that truly stands on its own.

Brian,

Good work, keep it up. You're on the edge of something with the abstract stuff and I want to see you nail it. I hope you make it (a good living) as an artist. And thanks for the shout out.

Reflections of the Past

Reflections of the Past
Oil on Canvas
36 inches X 48 inches
1998

This is an original oil painting that I did
way back in 1998. I still have it in my
personal collection.

In this painting are displayed several images. The main theme here is of present life in my province of Newfoundland. Because of the failure of the fishery and unemployment many have had to move elsewhere to support their families. Our culture and livelihood is fading away, but is being reflected elsewhere, mainly on the "mainland".

There is an image of a fish seen on the top left. That image is reflected in a much larger skeletal looking form. This symbolizes the failure of the fishery. A sunset is depicted on the right and is reflected by dark shadows, showing that our past majestic sunsets are just a fading memory. People who have moved away do not get to enjoy the same sites in the bustling cities. An iceberg, which is also depicted here, is just one site. All these sites and memories are swept up into an abyss, but they never fade away. They forever stay in our hearts as proud Newfoundlanders.

Here is a link to a larger version of the image.
