History and Background
The Art for Cancer Group (AFC) is the creation and vision of artist Cid Palacio. Cid together with her creative co-partner Dorit Fuhg have brought the group along to it's present status. AFC was first established in February 2009 with a flagship group of artists at ImageKind. Today, there are over 300 members throughout various online sites and the artists have donated over 1000 pieces of art- with a percentage of sales designated to support cancer charity.Cancer was the impetus for Cid's journey into the art world. Initially it was a way for her to escape the cruel reality that her mom had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It then became a passion and an obsession.
Cid's vision of uniting global artists to fight cancer is a reality. The members of the Art for Cancer Group (AFC) donate the proceeds from the sale of their art to various cancer charities around the world. Donations vary from 25% to 100% on selected artwork. Some artists have elected to donate a smaller percentage and have contributed many pieces while others have elected to donate a larger percentage and fewer pieces.
The digital artwork you see above is by Cid Palacio and is called Flowers for Mom. She created this piece in honor of her mother after she lost her courageous battle with cancer in June 2009. This piece may be purchased at Imagekind. 100% of the net sales from this image donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

This Broken BlossomSuch vibrant beauty glowing there
Despite the petals ragged, torn,
Its form yet graced with colors rare.
The stalk still strong enough to bear
What life remains, be it forlorn;
Such vibrant beauty glowing there.
What caused such sorry disrepair
To such a posy, perfect-born?
Its form yet graced with colors rare.
For surely it is unaware:
The flower knows not it was shorn.
Such vibrant beauty glowing there.
For, having nothing to compare
It cannot weep, it cannot mourn.
Its form yet graced with colors rare.
Appreciate this vision fair -
This blossom's worthy not of scorn.
Such vibrant beauty glowing there,
Its form yet graced with colors rare.

This dramatic image is called 'In Bloom' by Rona Black. What a lovely piece this is for our eyes to gaze upon. As my daughter would say, "It's eye candy". From the artist: 'In Bloom © Rona Black. Yellow-pink phalaenopsis orchid in bloom. 25% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.' Kelly's Story
A story of hope and art.
Kelly's StoryI am writing this story of grace and hope about my daughter Kelly who is currently fighting AML (leukemia). Kelly is an amazing woman and my hero. She was unexpectedly diagnosed with AML three months ago in March 2011. After a routine visit to her gynecologist and having her blood work analyzed, Kelly's doctor called her at work and said she needed to get to the ER immediately. At the ER, Kelly learned she had 86% cancer cells in her bone marrow.....a deathly blow.
Kelly was a busy working mother before her diagnosis. Her daughter Aven is 7 months old at the time of this writing. Kelly has always been an organized 'do it all' person. She is a mother, wife, restaurant manager in a large corporation, private pilot, and artist. She was scrambling to get everything done in a small 24 hour period of time each day. The cancer has now slowed her down. My daughter remains in the hospital undergoing chemo treatment for her acute leukemia, which consists of 24/7 chemo for a week. Then, waiting for her blood count to come back up. Then, repeating the process. She will have to repeat this process 5 times in total. With prayer, hope, triumph, and luck, her leukemia will be in recession and stay that way after these processes are over.
Through all of this, my daughter has a terrific attitude and has not lost her crazy sense of humor. Kelly is an incredible woman. She is strong. She is a bright spirit. She is a fighter. Kelly will be well.
This is a quote from Kelly: "Being diagnosed with Acute Leukemia has given me a second chance at life, literally. I no longer want to live another moment with unhappy lifestyles, people, jobs or circumstances that will hinder my overall sense of purpose and joy. Life is precious and it can end in a second. Before cancer, I had forgotten these things that bring me great pride. I was becoming one of the many that just seemed to exist and not reach out to tap into our true gifts and universal paths. Since I have been painting in the hospital, I have been able to let go of my deadly disease and live in the present, without fear, and feel good again about what I have accomplished throughout my life. I am a painter! Now if I can just get the nursing staff to stop taking my blood pressure every 5 seconds and stop asking me several times a day if I've pooped. It really ruins the moment sometimes, ya know."
Kelly has been painting in the hospital and when she gets released she will join AFC and offer prints of her paintings for sale. She will donate 100% of the proceeds to 'The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society'. I share some of her works with you here. There is a tremendous healing power in the creative process and you can certainly see the power of art in my daughter's watercolor paintings. Enjoy!

Meet AFC Artist ~ RC deWinter
Regina Coeli deWinter is a photographer, digital artist and writer living and working in Middletown, Connecticut. Her work has been published in print and online; in addition, one of her pieces has been licensed to Disney/ABC for use on the show Desperate Housewives. In October 2011 she will be mounting her first solo gallery exhibition, to which the public is invited. Our Interview with RC deWinter:
Q. Do you consider ART your Career? How did it all start for you?
A - I do now that I have no other job. When I was employed full time, pursuing art as a career was one of my top goals - now, although my income is severely reduced, I am doing just that and enjoying it immensely. My interest in art was fuelled by the beautiful color illustrations by the greats - Renoir, Degas, Velasquez, Rembrandt and also some of the early modernists like Miro and Kandinsky - in a set of encyclopaedias we had while I was growing up. I also remember being fascinated with photography from the time I was a child - some of the first pictures I shot were when I was about age 9, with an old black-and-white Kodak Brownie. I still remember the pictures I took of an old hay rake in a field%u2026I wish I still had them!
Q. How would you describe your work? Do you focus on a particular genre? Why?
A - Hmmm%u2026eclectic is the word. I don't really hew closely to any genre, although digitally painting antique rooms and furniture from my photographs - as well as flowers in an "Old Masters" style - are a couple of favourite styles. I am now branching out into more Impressionist-style work along with fantasy. In photography, portraits are my specialty.
Q. Why did you join the ART for Cancer Group? What is the significance of this group to you?
A - My mother is a breast cancer survivor - and giving back for her complete recovery is important to me.
Q. Do you create for yourself or for a specific market?
A - I produce what I 'see', what I feel, what I like. I am no good at aiming for a specific buyer or market. That's probably why I don't sell as much as I would like! But I have been invited to mount a solo exhibition that will be open every Saturday throughout the month of October at the Arts of Tolland Gallery here in Connecticut. I am honoured to be the first digital artist invited to exhibit at this venue.
Q. What are the most important tools you use in your work? What is your workspace like?
A - The most necessary and important tools are my eye and my imagination - to see something either in reality and be able to shoot a good photograph of it, or to see something in my mind that I want to express. Naturally my cameras are critical components, and also my computer and scads of software that enables me to design, paint and draw digitally.
Q. What is an interesting fact about yourself that not too many people know?
A - My first career in creativity was as a singer-songwriter, a profession I followed for several years up and down the eastern portion of the US.

Some Featured AFC Artists from 2010
This tantalizing mixed media piece is called 'Sunlit Roses' and was created by Cid Palacio. This artwork is 'candy for the eyes'. The surface shimmers and glows. The colorful shapes twirl into lovely roses that magically appear on a black and white backdrop. Our eyes delight in the profusion of color and shape as if eating a rare chocolate. 100% of net sales donated to cancer charity. 2010
What a happy piece of art! We all could use a smile like this. This wonderful art is from Leigh Wells and is called 'Whimsy'. Last but not least is a real stunner for you to see. These photographs are a set and called 'Wild Things' created by Dorit Fuhg. This piece is called a triptych. In Fine Art, a triptych is a set of three panels or compartments side by side, bearing pictures, carvings, or the like. The triptych form arises from early Christian art, and was a popular standard format for altar paintings from the Middle Ages onwards. The composition and use of color are exquisite in Dorit's art piece. 50% of net sales proceeds go to MacMillan Cancer Support. The Mini
Some AFC Breast Cancer Awareness Artists in 2009
October was 'Breast Cancer Awareness' month. Each of these artists have a pink theme to their work and are donating 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the piece to breast cancer research.
This unusual piece is called 'Pink Monday'. It was created by Sue Molyneaux. From the artist: As a cancer survivor, I know what Mondays can be like: the day the treatment begins again, the day the weekend respite is over. It lead to a few "blue Mondays." But it also lead to many more Pink Mondays, days when you woke up and the fight was on, the battle was blazing and you were rested and ready to go.
Pink Monday captures the intensity of that emotional battle, the determination to win, with its different shades of pink, the purity of white, the darkness of black, the intermittent grey. Painted on a Monday, Pink Monday projects the will to fight, and win. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this artwork will be donated to Gilda's Club of Toronto.
