Truvia... the Newest Sweetener

First there was stevia, and now there's Truvia. Truvia is one of the newest sweeteners that's been approved as a sugar substitute in the United States. It's based on the stevia plant, just as the sweetener Stevia is, but it goes in a different direction.

For starters, it's based off an extract of the plant, something called Rebaudioside A, derived from genetically modified plants. Sometimes known as rebiana, it had been outed as being potentially dangerous by a UCLA research team when it was initially being discussed as usage in Stevia, which decided against it in its pure form. Second, it's been mixed with erythinol, a sugar alcohol that also has no calories, but something that can bother many people who don't process sugar alcohols well.

Like other sweeteners, it's gotten comments as to whether it tastes better or as good as other sweeteners, including the original Stevia. It gets mixed reviews, as some people have said that it has a bitter aftertaste, which its maker Cargill Corporation, states it's been trying to eliminate. Other people have said that it takes more packets than other sweeteners to get something to taste sweet enough, something the company disputes.

Is Truvia Safe?

How long before we see the side effects?

The big question is whether Truvia is safe or not. The studies have shown that it is, but they're somewhat skewed and questionable. That's because almost all the studies have been conducted only by the company itself, and no one independent, other than the rebiana study, which was done for Stevia and not for Truvia. The company position is that there have been no substantiated stories of side effects from the product.

However, there are complaints on the internet leaking out. Some people have had problems because of the sugar alcohol in it. Some people have said that it altered the taste of other foods for days after trying it out. And a few people have said that they started itching and broke out in hives.

Is Truvia a good alternative for me?

Should I try Truvia?

What does that say about Truvia overall? It says that some people won't react well to it, and others might like it, pretty much like every other sweetener. However, the presence of the sugar alcohol should alert those people who know they don't deal well with it to be careful.
