Dancing My Way Back to Life
by Alyse Hart, Corporate Recovery
I've spent half a lifetime trying to squelch myself--reel it in & tone it down. I tried to be smaller & to feel less. I tried not to stick out. I was always too much. Holding it in was hard work--it exhausted me! You probably don't realize what hard work it was. Pull in your stomach all the way, hold your breath & walk around like that for about 60 seconds. See? It's tiring to do all the time. So I tried alternating between "holding it in" & "blending in." This made me feel like a total outsider, even when I reached the inner circle.
Throughout my 20's & early 30's, I lost my original self. Gone! I was so well tucked in that I forgot who I really was. I was a wild gal in a nicely tailored outfit--starched & repressed. I became obsessed with finding & unleashing the real me in my late 30's. I felt I had to do it before I died. Turning 40 made me aware of this huge clock ticking--no, not the baby clock, but the death clock. 40 was supposed to be over the hill, past my prime & the beginning of the end. I freaked. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, I was deemed useless by our youth-obsessed culture & I hadn't even really gotten started yet. It was too soon to be over.
40 should mark a right of passage--so I celebrated by going to a plastic surgeon for the requisite midlife under-eye touchup. Turning 45 threw an unexpected curve ball: hot flashes, blahs, mini-Alzheimer moments. I'd just begun loosening up & having fun & now my body was totally out of control. Only a year or two before, I was finally befriending my body & even feeling sexy. How could this be happening to me?
Even though my imperfect body was betraying me, I decided I'd better make friends with it. I began to study movement & dance. I began to feel my body's strength & admired all the hard work it did. I explored it below the skin & enjoyed the subtleties in the way it moved. I paid attention as I inhaled & watched how the breath traveled & it felt sensational. Instead of my head leading, my body was providing insights into my emotional state & I learned more about what's going on in my head.
I've found my self-study worthwhile--sometimes scary & sometimes delightful. The result is that, at last, my skin suit & I are one. As I approach 50, I feel a peaceful certainty coming over me. I am less judgmental with myself & I don't think about separate body parts (like my thighs or my stomach). Finally, I am totally comfortable in my own skin & looking forward to the second half of life.
