Can Astrology Predict Your Future?
Why do we want to know the future? Well, if you are planning a long road trip or vacation, do you watch up-coming road and weather conditions? Do you book lodging in advance? Do you pack clothing in accordance with the climate conditions at your destination and along the way? Most of us do.
And, if you're smart, you will also check your horoscope!!

Fate vs. Free Will
The dictionary defines the word future as: (1) time that is to come; (2) what is going to happen. I think we can all agree that this is the central idea of what we mean when we use the word future. But there is more to this idea than just the dictionary definition of it. How do we regard the future? There are religions that hold that the future is fated. They teach that the future is already written and there is nothing we humans can do to change that. Good or bad, our fate is already sealed, and we must accept God's will.When you think about the future, how do you consider it? Is it a matter of simple fate already written down somewhere? There are other ways, of course, to regard the future. Most of us in the western world probably think of it as something which can be planned for and that our planning will affect our future circumstances positively. If this were not so, then why plan anythiing?
My own view of the future is that it flows out of the present. I believe it is formed by the actions and decisions we make in the present. Our decisions made and actions taken in the present are the blocks upon which our future is built.
If this is true, then nothing can predict that future without knowing, in advance, what choices we will make in the present. And this is why Astrology, also, cannot predict the future in detail. "Tomorrow, you will be walking down the street to the grocery store, and you will round a corner and bump into a tall dark stranger....." For that kind of future detail, we should consult a psychic! (Which is another topic altogether!)However, what Astrology can do, and do very well, is to give us a picture of our future terrain. It clearly shows both difficult or challenging periods of time in the future, and also harmonious and beneficial times. Armed with this knowledge, we can navigate these times more successfully, taking advantage of the beneficial influences and finding strategies to minimize the effects of the difficult times.
Furthermore, it will show which areas of our lives will be most greatly affected by these astro influences, such as: finances, home and family, children, marriage and partnership, career, investment, friends, brothers and sisters, etc.

Making Informed Decisions Based On Your Astrological Knowledge of Future Trends
Astrology is the best tool I know of for looking at future trends, and this is where the real predictive power of Astrology lies. After a thorough examination of the birth chart, a look at up-coming progressions and transits will give a clear picture of what we will be dealing with during any selected time period in the future. Knowledge of this gives us an added advantage that we would not otherwise have.If you look at your horoscope and see a period of challenge in the area of finances, you can decide not to change jobs during this period. You may not want to make new investments or take on a loan, because you know that the tide is against you and your judgement, also, may not be as good as it would otherwise be. So, you wait until the aspect has passed, before proceeding. In this way you may have altered your future by avoiding the worst outcome of a difficult aspect.
Conversely, you see a beneficial period coming up, especially in the area of your finances. This is the time to work on getting a promotion at work, or expanding your business, because the tide is with you and your judgement will probably be sound. Opportunities will present themselves during this time, and this is the time to take advantage of them.
My Conclusion
Astrology shows the terrain of the future.
So, can Astrology predict our future? No, not precisely, because the future is not static. It is molded by the decisions we make, and the actions we take in the present.But astrology is a wonderful tool for indicating the general terrain of the future, and with it we can put our talents and strengths to their best use, while working to strenghten ourselves in those areas of challenge in our horoscopes.

This is an old favorite of mine. It's not a "cookbook", ie. canned descriptions of the signs, planets and elements. Arroyo guides the reader to grasp the basic ideas for each of the signs and planets and apply them to the chart through the process of synthesis. I keep going back to this one whenever I've made astrology too complicated, and need to return to the basics.

I have a difficult Saturn in my chart. This book was a real discovery for me. Horary Astrology is my favorite astrological study. This book makes this medieval art intellegible, even to the beginner. Anthony Lewis is an excelent writer and has managed to take most of the obscure (arcane) information on Horary and simplify it for the modern reader, without leaving out any of the crucial components necessary for setting up and judging a horary question. If you're interested in Horary (Horary answers a specific question, asked at a specific time), this is the book to begin or continue your studies with.
