My Asus Eee PC Review
1st Hand Review of the new Asus Eee 701 Mini PC
The 7 inch, under $400 PC from Asus comes with everything you need to function- Operating system, office suite, browser, games, learning software, anti-virus software and a built in video camera. Thanks to the Asus Eee's operating system the software run on it is feature filled and free. The operating system is a specialized version of Linux. Specialized does not mean stripped down either. The operating system is optimized for the Eee PC. It comes preset with all of the needed drivers and memory settings. It's so efficient the boot up and shutdown process is fast.
Don't be putoff by the Eee specifications for hardware. The processor, memory and storage drive are selected for price and the operating system designed around it. The quick boot up is the first sign of just how well this worked out. The cheaper components did not suffer at the expense of the free software used throughout this system.
The quality of the operating system and software is nothing but familiar and efficient and effective. The open source Linux version used for the operating system is feature filled and supports common add-ons out of the box. I plugged in both a mini-wired mouse from Logitech and a wireless Microsoft mini-mouse and both were instantly detected and worked right off.
I plugged in a few other common things and they all worked without having to look for drivers and go through a tricky setup. I used a few different USB flash drives without a hassle- the auto detect popped up and asked if I wanted to open the drive, explore, etc. I also plugged in a few secure digital cards and received the same response.
The other noteworthy software included on the Eee PC are the Office Suite and Web Browser. There are plenty of other programs included but I won't go into detail on these- they include learning games, entertainment, educational programs and specific web tools.
The main web tool is the Mozilla Firefox browser. I love Firefox and have replaced Internet Explorer on every system I use. Its just cleaner and more user friendly. All of the standard features are left into the version on the Eee PC. Its a full fledged, powerful web browser.
The last piece of software I'll discuss is the OPen Office Suite. This is an open source office suite that includes: word processor, spreadsheet, presentation creator, etc. The look and feel of the word processor and spreadsheet match Word and Excel in nearly every aspect- except for price! Everything is 100% compatible with Microsoft programs and I shuffle files back and forth all of the time.
I like open office since it has built in capabilities to create PDF files and its ability to edit HTML is better advanced that Microsoft Office. Of course Microsoft will sell you a program to do HTML for a few hundred dollars.
The screen is small but that's no surprise. Its OK for web browsing and I do edit Squidoo pages and work on documents pretty frequently. The only real criticism I have of the Asus Eee PC is the amount of heat it generates. I would have thought the heat generated by the mini-PC would be minimal and well disipated. However, if you put this unit on your lap you'll feel the burn. The documentation clearly cautions you about this but I would have hoped it would be better than a regular laptop, not worse.

Asus Eee Mini PC vs. XO Laptop
Which is better?
The One laptop for every child program was started with the intent to create a $100 laptop. This ambitious goal was with the intent to create a PC that can be used anywhere in the world and provide a means for underprivileged children to access and learn using a super rugged laptop. The result was a $180 PC that runs using a modified Linux operating system. To promote the program the fine folks at One Laptop Per Child ran a promotion to launch the program. The promotion allowed people the opportunity to buy one of the XO computers for themselves if they purchased one to give away as part of their program. For a bit under $400 you would donate one to their cause and receive one for yourself.
I jumped on the offer before it expired at the end of 2007. I received my XO right before the holidays. It unpacks similar to the Asus Eee- well packaged and without much fluff in the box. It has a few simple getting started guides, the XO and the power adapter.
The boot time of the XO is longer than the Eee. Both run on a modified Linux operating system but the features of the setup are a bit different. both have built in cameras and WiFi. Both also have a keyboard, touchpad, USB ports and headphone jacks. The software pre installed differs as does the main interface of the system.
I prefer the software and interface of the Eee. The Eee has plenty educational offerings but still includes "grown up" options such as Skype, OpenOffice suite and a better email client. I also prefer the look of the Eee. The XO looks and feels very "Fisher Price"- its white and green while the Eee is offered in both a black or white finish. The XO also has a vry nice swivel screen so you can rotate the screen and use the XO like a tablet PC.
The particular Eee I received easily allowed me to upgrade the memory to 1g where I did not see how to easily upgrade the XO. As a professional adult I have no concerns about opening up my bag and pulling out the Eee. I would never be seen in a business setting with an XO.
As far as child use I'd recommend either system with a slight advantage going to the Eee simply based on availability and the likelihood of a longer useful lifespan. I think a child would outgrow the XO sooner.
The screens are comparable and the keyboard/touchpad identical in function although the XO is built for more extreme exposure. I like the XO's attempt to make the WiFi more functional using the antennas on either side of the screen (also function to lock the XO closed) but think these "ears" are the most likely thing to break on the XO. The reception of a WiFi signal on the Eee has never been a problem.
Although the XO has some cool features and I love the idea of one laptop per child if I compare the 2 simply for which is a better, more useful computer I have to tip the trophy to the Asus Eee.
1. Its available through retail outlets.
2. It has a bit more zip to it.
3. The look of the Eee is much more "grown up".
4. The included programs and OS of the Eee are practical for children and adults.

- If you turn your XO screen halfway so that the screen is up but half of it is over the keyboard, look underneath and you'll see an SD slot. You can put an SD card in there to increase your memory. The slot is waterproof so it's possible that you might run into difficulty taking the card out. Just FYI.
