Do Atheists Have Spiritual Experiences?

There are many who would find the phrase 'atheist spirituality' to be a contradiction in terms. In fact, it is not. Belief in God, Gods, or other supernatural phenomena is not required for one to have spiritual experiences. In fact some organized religions including Buddhism, do not even subscribe to the idea of God or gods!

While many express their spirituality through their religious practices religion doesn't have a monopoly on spirituality itself. Spiritual experiences are almost universal to the human experience. Without the trappings of religion, it may be difficult to recognize and identify spiritual elements in the atheist's life but nevertheless, they can usually be found.

Spirituality Does Not Require Belief in the Existence of Souls

Spirit doesn't mean something supernatural to atheists

I think one place the confusion comes from when discussing atheist spirituality is that the word 'spirit' has more than one definition. Many people take the 'spirit' in spirituality to mean the soul or to be related to spirits such as God, Gods, Goddess, Goddesses, angels, or ghosts.

The word 'spirit' is not always about souls but sometimes refers to intent or essence. Even a law can have a spirit. When we speak about following the spirit of the law rather than the word of the law spirit roughly means the intent of the law. The human spirit encompasses many things including emotions, character, beliefs, convictions, and personality.

I believe that any time we begin delving into the intangible aspects of ourselves, the universe, and other human beings we are entering into the realm of spirituality.

What is a Spiritual Experience?

For atheists, a spiritual experience is a deeply emotional experience

Many would say that spiritual experiences are generally accompanied by feelings of connectedness, humility, and awe. For every human being, the stimulus that causes these feelings may be different. But many of the things that cause these feelings are similar or at least comprehensible to other human beings. When we look at a newborn baby, a beautiful sunset, a shining expanse of ocean, or a velvet black sky pricked with starlight almost all of us experience those feelings, religious or not.

Religious people will tend to process those events in terms of their religious beliefs to the extent that the feelings themselves are sometimes attributed to God or other aspects of the religious belief. Atheists have the same type of experiences; they just don't attribute them to any aspect of religion.

Atheist Beliefs

Atheists are only "missing" one belief, belief in God

People often think atheists have no beliefs but in truth, atheists have just as many beliefs as anyone else - it's just that belief in God isn't one of them.

While atheists have no set of commonly held beliefs, they generally hold beliefs just as the majority of the human race does.

I believe in love, empathy, compassion, the basic goodness of humanity, the availability of joy and pleasure in life, the power of knowledge, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Many other people, both theists and non-theists alike, believe in some or all of these things too. I find these beliefs to be spiritual.

A Spiritual Connection

Atheists also experience feelings of connectedness and awe

Many people associate a feeling of belonging and connectedness to spirituality, especially when it co-exists with feelings of awe and humility. The thing is - it's perfectly possible for atheists to experience this.

No religious explanation of connectedness is necessary. We are connected to and a part of everything in easily observable ways.

Spatially, we exist in the universe and on the world. We are of the universe and the world and we are parts of it. Environmentally, we are part of the cycle of life, air, and water. The solar system, the earth, the biosphere - all fit us so perfectly not because they were made for us but because we are a part of them. Biologically, we are related to all life on earth - brothers and sisters of all mankind and cousins to all life on earth.

These things are no less amazing if not engineered by a benevolent God. When we contemplate that we are tiny, ephemeral creatures so small in the scheme of the vast universe, it's almost impossible not to feel awe and humility.

In my opinion spirituality is just a term to describe incredibly intense emotions including but not limited to awe, wonder, joy, and a sense of connectedness.

No, deep experiences such as love are not possible without belief in God.

Yes, deeply emotional and profound experiences are part of the human experience with or without religion.

A-Redneck says:

Definitely. Spirituality comes from the heart and can exist in any living creature.

---Chazz says:

I agree with your definition of spirituality.

dannystaple says:

Yes I strongly believe this to be true. There are some profound things I experience in my life, and I've no need for dogma to have felt them, including feeling connections to many other people, and a connection to both our earth, and to its life.

kpete54 says:

Yes I firmly believe that atheists can and do have spiritual experiences. I have had an experience like no other about 25 or so years ago. I won't go into detail here. You can read about it and how I came to not believe in a god on my blog at blogger. My fibro fog blog. Pete.....

jennysue19 says:

I think you should change 'belief in God' to 'belief in a God or Goddess'

As a pagan, and a woman, I relate more naturally to a female deity, which is why I gravitated away from other male-dominated beliefs.

My Most Spiritual Experience

For me, the most spiritual thing is love. Love is an ancient and powerful thing. It kindled in the breasts of warm-blooded beasts millions of years ago and has passed on from generation to generation, growing in depth and diversity and spreading until it has covered the entire planet. To love is to honor love, to feed love itself. The love I have shared in this life will feed into future generations of love and traces its lineage far into the distant past.

We all have spirits within us and it is what creates our spirituality. Our emotions, our morality, our thoughts, and our actions all add up to display our spirituality to those around us. Although one time I was told that you must be religious to be moral, I do not believe so. I have seen many religious people who are not moral and many non religious individuals who are very moral.

I call this an exemplary atheist and spiritual--great resource! You cover many key points, all I can think of right now, though I'm sure there are more for such a topic.

I agree with your general concept, but the word "spiritual" makes my skin crawl. I prefer other words, such as "mysterious" or "transcendent". Thanks for another good lens.

I'm glad I came across your article (and another one of yours, I read prior to this one). You say in plain and easy to follow language what I've been thinking all along. I applaud you on your courage to speak up, especially in light of a general climate of discrimination against Atheists in America. On a side-note: Discrimination against the black community in America *appears* to be over at the fact of the first black person being elected into the presidential chair, but discrimination against free-thinking individuals is still o.k. I call that a classic case of hypocrisy. After all - it takes guts to face the seemingly undeniable fact that we're born alone and die alone - ultimately leaving us with the finding that we're all alone whenever we are not exposed to love - which basically translates into physical experiences of smell and touch. If you have never faced the agony of being separate from everything and braved it - you are likely to discriminate against everyone who has undergone this most distressing experience. I can't blame people of faith for hanging on to their belief system by all means. And when I say by ALL means, I mean this in very literal terms, as history has well proven.
